Snopes was originally run by a California couple on a newsgroup but today has a board of reputable people, some of who are well known such as published university professor Dr. Jan Harold Brunvand from the University of Utah, that work hard with factcheck.org and the Annenberg Foundation to keep Snopes reputable (though no such site is perfect imo).

But you simply cannot compare that with some defrocked guy who put up a blog and spins wild yarns. Those types are the reason why Snopes exists... lol.

I have looked up several major rumors/conspiracies on Snopes and they either avoid them altogether or give very lacking explanations, never addressing the largest issues of the rumors/conspiracies.
 
Yes, well think of Snopes as one starting point. Despite their liberal bias and imperfections, I'd put more stock in what they have to say than a defrocked person with a blog claiming the Pope and Queen Elizabeth II get together and rape hundreds of children, hunt them like foxes for sport, and eat the flesh off their bodies afterwards.
