Conservative government in Australia dismantling freedom

Well we had a navy man attacked this morning who was in uniform, we had 2 policemen stabbed and threatened with beheading, we had 15 arrested in Sydney with plans to have a beheading of an innocent victim in the middle of our city. We are being targeted and we currently have 60 Australian citizens in Syria and Iraq on the side of ISIS.

And the world wonder why America is so in love with its guns!! We, by far, have the most guns/assault weapons per household than any country in the world. It would be a very bad idea if terrorists decide to go on a rampage with guns pointed at them on every corner.

Heads up for all the non Australians: The Liberal party is our conservative party, but they are not classical liberals, nor liberals in the American sense. They are liberal (small l) in some senses, but in others are really more conservative than liberal. I can't imagine the surveillance package put up by our Liberal party, for instance, being supported by the Republicans. The Liberal Party here also supports universal health care in principle (this has been a bipartisan issue for decades) & gun control.

Among Western developed nations, America also has the highest gun homicide rates. By far. Most Aussies would rather keep our nation as gun-restricted as possible. The middle & upper classes are getting a little concerned that the spillage may come into their neighborhoods and are preparing for it by buying assault weapons.

Just stay away from the bad, poor neighborhoods and you will be okay. IMHO, 65% of the homicides are in the poor, gang-ridden neighborhoods.

Thanks Jim - I understand automatic weapons make up only a relatively small percentage of overall gun-related deaths (but when they do it's something catastrophic, like a mass shooting). But really? 2 known homicides since 1934 from legally owned automatic weapons? I would love to know where you got that number from. Other sources (here, here and here) say otherwise. Also - does Aurora or Newtown ring a bell?

In any case, given Australia's complete ban on all automatic assault/semi-automatic/pump-action handguns, 1 for every 1,000 is high in my books. More generally, it seems hard to deny that there's some kind of gun problem over there. 89 guns (whether automatic/semi-automatic/shotgun/etc.) for every 100 residents is insane. The fact that in many states you can still buy a firearm without any background check is unfathomable to me.

Good point, biscuit. (I've been to the States myself awhile back, loved it Australia also has its ghettos and bad neighbourhoods where gun violence is on average higher than the general population. However, our firearm homicide rate is still comparatively much lower. And that's got to be a good thing, for low, middle or upperclass people. We've also had extremely, extremely few mass shootings - can count them on one hand - since our gun law overhaul after the 1996 Port Arthur massacre.

In short: more guns, more problems.
