hmmmm...but what about this?

Gal 3:16
Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, "And to seeds," as referring to many, but rather to one, "And to your seed," that is, Christ.
Abraham "seed" if from him alone. The word "heirs" is plural.
Read on through Galatians 3:19 "And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, (singular) and heirs (plural) according to the promise.

Then through the seed of Abraham there are many heirs of the promise through Christ.

yes, i see. we are the heirs...the inheritors of the Promise in Christ.

Gal 3:19
Why the Law then? It was added because of transgressions, having been ordained through angels by the agency of a mediator, until the seed would come to whom the promise had been made.

that's Jesus, right?

Agreed. So when Paul mentions us being heirs according to the promise and being of Abraham's seed, what do you think of that comparison because we are Christ's? Then it goes back to this thread in the OP and we can put it together according to the word of God. It's beautiful.

Thanks, but the covenant (singular) with Abraham is not mentioned. The story is known by most people in the church, but the bosom of Abraham is what I'm questioning as to what it is.
Hi just-me,

To be in Abraham's bosom means to be in a close relationship with Abraham as in the passage you quote where Hagar was giving into Abraham's bosom. The rich man was a Jew and the Jews were Abraham's seed and expected that they were the heirs of the promises God had made to Abraham. The parable of Lazarus and the rich man is showing that the priesthood is being taken away from the Jewish leadership and given to someone else. Similarly Jesus said,

11 "And I say to you that many will come from east and west, and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. (Mat 8:11 NKJ)

I've written a paper on the covenant that God made with Abraham if you're interested I can give you the link.

The promise is the land that God promised Abraham. He made the same promise to Isaac and Jacob. As has been pointed out Paul tells us that the seed that God was referring to was Christ. Those who are in Christ are Abraham's seed and heirs according to the promise.

okay, so we're basically saying the Israelites were the first recipients (other than Abraham himself)
of the promise of a coming Messiah?

i wonder who else, during that 490 years between Abraham and national Israel,
was given that Promise of the Gospel to come?

I read of no one else until Paul began his ministry to the Gentiles. This is called a mystery in the Bible. The promise was for no one else outside of Abraham's seed.

See the chronology and you will understand the number of years that went by. Israel was in Egypt for 430 years beginning with Joseph. http://christianchat.com/bible-discussion-forum/100117-what-not-where-bosom-abraham.html#post1709188

This mystery was that Gentiles would be grafted in, and that was hidden until Christ came and revealed it to Paul on the road to Damascus. That's when Paul was struck blind.

Seed produces fruit after its own kind, Saul was not Abraham's seed, although he was a Jew, until he identified with Abraham's heart, which was of faith, after which he was renamed Paul.

Romans 9:8
That is, it is not the children of the flesh who are children of God, but the children of the promise are regarded as descendants.

The spiritual promises—the promises of the “one seed,”
Christ, and of salvation through Him,
the Bible calls the scepter.

But the material and national promises relating to many
nations, national wealth, prosperity and power, and possession
of the Holy Land, the Bible calls the birthright.

Both the birthright and the scepter were repromised by the Eternal to Abraham and Isaac and to Jacob.
that Isaac was born by promise, and by a miracle from God,

The sceptre shall not depart from Judah …” (Genesis 49:10).
But the birthright was Joseph’s” (1 Chronicles 5:2).

One must also take this into account when Paul was writing to the church in Rome. Benjamin was Joseph's younger brother, Jacob's youngest son. Jacob was later named Israel by God Himself

Matthew 1:2a Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob;

"I say then , Hath God cast away his people? God forbid . For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin." Romans 11:1

Neither should we forget the Shema, nor the Promise in Romans 11:26 and so all Israel will be saved; just as it is written, "THE DELIVERER WILL COME FROM ZION, HE WILL REMOVE UNGODLINESS FROM JACOB."

There was a change in death at the moment that Christ gave up the ghost. There is no scripture in the Old Testament that says that they went to heaven at death, none that says they went to be with Christ. It says that they slept, or they were with Abraham. The first time death as we know it was mentioned was when the thief who was crucified with Christ would be with Christ.

Lazarus and the Rich man died before Christ was crucified, and it was at the point there was a change.

Scripture tells us the exact moment this change occurred.

Mat 27:50 But Yeshua, again crying out in a loud voice, yielded up his spirit. 51 At that moment the parokhet in the Temple was ripped in two from top to bottom; and there was an earthquake, with rocks splitting apart. 52 Also the graves were opened, and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life; 53 and after Yeshua rose, they came out of the graves and went into the holy city, where many people saw them.

This is not RedTent.

Where is RedTent? Is she okay?

I like that. Israel will be saved by Christ. So the Bosom of Abraham is the salvation God has promised from the beginning. The Gospel is in all that God has delivered by His spoken word, and finalized through the death burial and resurrection of Christ Jesus.

Ephesians 1:10-11
10 That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven,
and which are on earth; even in him:
11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:

dispensation=3622. oikonomia oy-kon-om-ee'-ah from 3623; administration (of a household or estate); specially, a (religious) "economy":--dispensation, stewardship.
3623. oikonomos oy-kon-om'-os from 3624 and the base of 3551; a house-distributor (i.e. manager), or overseer, i.e. an employee in that capacity; by extension, a fiscal agent (treasurer); figuratively, a preacher (of the Gospel):--chamberlain, governor, steward.

this is pretty simple...the 'bosom of abraham' is an idiomatic reference to the biblical hope of a heavenly afterlife and a reuniting with dead saints...especially abraham who was considered 'founder' of the israelite nation...

basically the picture is that when you died you would be in heaven...being comforted in the arms of abraham...
