For folks that are supposed to be looking for the imminent return of our Lord and Savior, there is certainly no shortage of "will be" and "some day" being advanced in this forum, while at the same time very little "what if?" being considered.
But is it possible that the mark of the beast could be fulfilled prophecy?
Let's first consider John's assignment:
Revelation 1:19 Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter;
So let's consider Revelation through John's eyes in his first century, and things "which are" and "shall be" to John, through an ethnographic hermeneutic. Consider John's "whole "world" through Strong's:
Based on that regional hermeneutic, what did John's whole "world" look like, by the 5th century?
Next consider:
Revelation 17:10 And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, [and] the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space.11 And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition.
In this chapter John describes the succession of kingdoms that occurred before, during, and after his day.
We learn from the second verse quoted above that the term "king" and "beast" (kingdom) are interchangeable for that passage.
JOHN'S EIGHT BEASTS
So what kingdom "beast" had "not yet come" in John's day, to rule his whole "world", and displace the Roman Empire of his day?
THE false prophet Muhammad's Islamic kingdom "beast". To argue against Islam being the 7th beast in the succession that John laid out, would be to argue against a historical matter of fact. Is it even reasonable to argue against the Islamic Second Jihad, in the image of the Islamic First Jihad, to be the 8th "beast"?
"….. it is said, five of the seven Kings are fallen, and one is, and another is not yet come; and the Beast that was and is not, being wounded to death with a sword, he is the eighth, and of the seven: he was therefore a collateral part of the seventh." - Isaac Newton
Now consider:
Rev 13:17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
So what is the spiritual condition of John's whole world Today, considering that each and every one of the false prophet Muhammad's followers is an antichrist that denies the Son of God, that also reject the crucifixion, death and resurrection of our Savior as articles of their faith in Muhammad alone? Isn't the "name" of THE false prophet Muhammad's kingdom beast "Islam"?

What is life like for the Christians and others that are being pursued, beheaded, crucified and persecuted, with houses marked with paint and such, throughout John's whole world today? (That is of course, except for those non-Muslims that live outside the tiny little strip of land of Israel, and the protection of the democracy of the Israeli Jewish State.)
The physical state of John's "world" is a historical matter of fact. The antichrist spiritual state of John's world is a scriptural matter of fact. Is it time for the church to wake up, and seriously reconsider the Roman Jesuit counter-reformation eschatologies of futurism and preterism, that began to come into vogue in the 19th century and took over the church by the time the Islamic kingdom "beast" was healed by western wealth transfer in the late 20th century? (after being mortally wounded in Tours France during the First Islamic Jihad - as pinned mathematically by Daniel)
Was the straying away from the church tradition of historicism, that necessarily precludes a near unanimity of the "church" from even considering that Muhammad could be THE false prophet of the book of Revelation, also prophesied?
2 Timothy 4:3-4 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away [their] ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
Any surprise that yet another John Darby styled and Lalonde, LaHaye and Jenkins profiteering "Left Behind" movie is about to come out?

Strong's:
world
New Testament Greek Definition:
3625 oikoumene {oy-kou-men'-ay}
feminine participle present passive of 3611 (as noun, by
implication of 1093); TDNT - 5:157,674; n f
AV - world 14, earth 1; 15
1) the inhabited earth
1a) the portion of the earth inhabited by the Greeks, in
distinction from the lands of the barbarians
1b) the Roman empire, all the subjects of the empire
1c) the whole inhabited earth, the world
1d) the inhabitants of the earth, men
2) the universe, the world
