It started with Mt.23 where Jesus tells us not to call any man father, because God is our father, or to call men rabbi, because Jesus is our Teacher. I think
He said this because making men our ultimate authority can lead to error.

"Woe unto you, teachers, hypocrites! for ye....
have omitted the weightier*matters*of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done,....." Mt:23:23

This is what sinning angels did, except they didn't need faith, because they saw God.

Man, "to the man" being sinful, has no preeminence, God no respecter of persons, for good reason: He is Holy. There is nothing on earth to replace God, so it's an obscenity to bestow the undue honor to any man that which our Lord Jesus demonstrated to One He addressed as Father, or Holy Father. You don't swap-out God. Take your eyes off Jesus Christ, and you've got one foot in hell already.

Yer, true growing up as a child. Calling a priest father felt gut churning. It just didn't seem right. Mind you I was the only Christian boy who was allowed to attend a Catholic Boys School. They did speak of the Holy Trinity yet the didn't mind to be called a position equal to that of GOD the Father.

Some would say not to take it literally. It's not like the Christmas Tree or keeping the Sabbath Day threads. This is up against the very title of our GOD the Father. I think it was disgusting at least I thought it was and I let people know about it. Then I was kicked out of the College as that and many other heretic cases I brought up to throw fire at with the school.

Calling a mere mortal sinner, giving him the title that only belongs to our LORD and our GOD. It is quite sincerely a vile and perverse act for anyone to carry. I think and feel if you do. Then that is called Ambush Idolatry. Satan causes sin and this is one of them. I am a kiwi but there ain't no pulling the wool over my eyes. It is wrong for you are putting the LORDS name against a mere mortal sinner.

No man deserves the titles Father or the Holy Father on the supreme GOD deserves and only deserves that title FATHER GOD.
I know if I say anything about using criticism to teach scripture it always comes back that Christ did it, but it still seems such a backward way to teach the love and power of Christ! Christ was God, Christ knew the heart of those He judged. I didn't like it when I was in the first grade and I watched some kids do this to someone, and watching the mean girls go at it in High School always made me very uncomfortable. I still really don't like reading it on CC.

It is self worship and it has not changed for thousands of years and is still happening today even in so called Christian churches.

Sinful man, in his pride and hubris, despite being the creature of the Creator, insists on having his way, too big a vain horse's rear to humble himself, to get knocked off that pedestal of pride and ego, in the face of the eternal Creator of this vast universe, Who all would fall flat on their faces to even be in the presence of?! Unrepentant man pops out of the womb, spends a few decades sinning, living by his own rules, his own works, and somehow thinks he's the king of the hill, on his way to an appointment with the grave and eternity in his spirit he somehow can't get around to seriously cracking a Bible and thinking about. Just how about that.

Kinda like where in the bible it says you take a lump of wood and carve an idol out of it and worship that idol..with the other half of that wood you use to build a fire..

We take a man like any man. . Filled with sin..needing salvation pronounce him holy then worship Him instead of the one who is truly holy and sovereign and truly God.

The part about the term "father" at first seems simple(I've looked at it because it weighs on me the same because of this scripture),,,,but what do we do with verses like "your father Abraham",,,"your fathers" that are all through the new testament?,,but Jesus is surly trying to convey something to us when he made that statement,,,,

Our Lord Jesus explicitly commanded to call no man father, address no man father (or Rabbi), which has nothing to do with using the word in a positional sense of family patriarch, as Paul used as spiritual patriarch of his converts, in love, but, for instance, no apostle addressed as Father in the New Testament, and they wouldn't have allowed this, of course.

Absolutely. And, if you know anything about the Bible, are you going to choose to participate in a congregation where you are supposed to address anybody so, in breach of a command of the Lord Jesus, or are you going to seek a congregation where you don't have that blatant disobedience to deal with? Catholicism drew a line on that one, their own worst enemy.

I wonder what the numbers are for those that were led to damnation by calling a priest father under such a congregation. Imagine how the lost compared the very name of the Father with a mere mortal sinner father. Being told to put complete trust in GOD the FATHER then to transfer that notion to the priest. It's a trap I tell you. Satan rearing his ugly head. As we know it's awkward to address a priest 'Hello Priest Samuel'. The priest or Satan a better word for it will comply with 'Please call me Father Samuel'. Pricks man utter stinking filthy pigs!

They use the very name of the One true GOD to their stench breath of snipers and vermin. The predator hunting it's prey. Once they break the trust of the lost. GOD will lose another soul. A whole congregation of souls can be lead to damnation. That's why your playing with fire.

Sure a child can call his dad father, as it is his biological offspring. But, not a man outside of a mans immediate home. I will teach my children why not to be calling any man father other than myself and the FATHER of all creation. GOD.

Most Protestant families use Dad or such, even so: as you, ever as a father to your own children, are still a man on earth, are you not?

I'm not sure if there is a thread that is covering this. But What originally prompted some religions, mostly Catholics. though I know others too. To start ignoring a God given command Matthew 23:9 Not to call them Father. I know religions differ from others, and there doctrines are contradicting against other religions. But what I want to know is, who?, or what? prompted religions to ignore it? And how did it all began, or how did it all become to be for them to ignore a God given command? I know first thought would be the Devil himself was probably behind it no matter what. Was it lack of translation? was it an over all leader decided to take that out of the bible?

Full verse:
Matthew 23:9 " And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven"

1 Cor 4
14 I do not write these things to shame you, but to admonish you as my beloved children. 15 For if you were to have countless tutors in Christ, yet you would not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel. 16 Therefore I exhort you, be imitators of me.

yep I was "drawing a line in the sand",,,because without it,,it cannot be weighed out and understood,,

They use that, but it is in no way a context of being addressed as Father, Father Paul. Straw man, where they show a lack of understanding, just like Peter's confession of Christ being the rock, not Peter. God is the rock or cornerstone of the Bible and the faith. One can prove up is down, by false exegesis: and when convenient, allegorize it. This is not learned, not understanding.

Even I have difficulties with that myself. I asked the Church about it the other day the reply was. Jews today like to use the term 'Abba'. Which is Daddy? Then they says father is okay, so long as they know who the real FATHER is. So yer, I'm kinda stuck again on it. I doesn't feel good though thinking about it. I mean I personally wouldn't like to be called father by my own child.

Don't let it weigh on you.

"For*though*ye*have*ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet have*ye*not*many*fathers: for in Christ Jesus I*have begotten you through the gospel." 1 Co.4:15

Paul was calling himself their father. Mt.23 is about putting men above God. Paul wasn't doing that. He served God with a true heart. Notice the difference:

In speaking of these false teachers whom we are not to regard as "fathers" or "teachers", Jesus said:

"All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe,*that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not." Mt.23:3

It's just there's been such a dearth of sabbath chatter and legalism threads, sometimes people get desperate.

you are using nasb?,,,in the others it is "I have begotten"

Jesus used the term "father" in referring to his human ancestors. The church knows that the Spirit gives us "teachers".
