in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month,

Noah took rest within the Ark on the 17th of the month when the Judgment hit, and the Ark rested on the 17th day of the month on Mount Ararat. I will speak more about the 17th day of the month when we talk about the Ark resting upon dry ground later.

the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up,

"All the fountains of the great deep broken up." This means that underwater water resevoirs had broken up below the Earth's surface whereby they would gush out water from below to add to the global flood.

and the windows of heaven were opened. (Genesis 7:11).

The windows of heaven were not cracked here. The windows of heaven were opened fully so as to let loose a type of intense rain that would destroy the Earth.

And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood (Genesis 7:7). In the selfsame day entered Noah, and Shem, and Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah's wife, (Genesis 7:13a) They, (Genesis 7:14a) and the three wives of his sons with them, into the ark; (Genesis 7:13b). And they that went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as God had commanded him:

Scripture is stressing here that Noah and his family had boarded the Ark. That all who had the breath of life (on dry land) that would survive the upcoming Judgment would only be those who are in the Ark only. For the Ark is a type of Jesus Christ and only those who take refuge in Christ will be able to survive the upcoming Judgment that is coming.

And the LORD shut him in. (Genesis 7:16).

Notice here how the passage says, "the LORD shut him in." It is stressing a singular person and not "them." Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. Noah was the head of the familly. Noah was the one who had received the instructions from God. Noah was the preacher of righteousness. God shut Noah in. Oh yes, Noah's family was onboard, too. For his family was a part of Noah's life and they were under his protection. But I believe God focuses his attention here on Noah again before the Judgment because Noah passed God's test to do all that the Lord commanded Noah to do. For God did not command his family to build the Ark and to put animals within it. God commanded Noah to do that; So God had shut Noah inside the Ark.

Noah did not have to close the door of the Ark. God closed the door for Noah. Many times there are doors that may open that might tempt us, but God can close the door on those temptations that are from our old world or past. God wants us to take refuge within the Ark (i.e. Christ). To trust in Him by faith.

No, I am not saying that his family was automatically saved just because Noah was a believer. Believers just plant the seeds and God gives the increase. Man is nothing (in and of himself) and God is everything; And all men have "free will" to accept God or to reject Him; But God is sovereign over his creation and He exists outside of linear time. 1 Peter 1:1-2 says God elects according to foreknowledge. Meaning God is aware of man's future free will choices and He elects men to the best possible place and time He chooses. For example: metaphorically speaking, imagine a bunch of balls of light at God's feet before time began; Now imagine God picks up one of those balls and places it into the time period and place He chooses. Meaning, the balls of lights are believers. It's why Abraham to Joseph are all true believers. God brought those souls into existence he knew were going to accept Him into the proper time and place. It's no different with Noah and his family. But Noah was extra special, though. Noah was a great man of faith that was a leader spiritually for his family. Just as Moses was a great leader for God's people (Israel). Now, I am not saying we existed before time or creation. No, no. Most certainly not. What I am saying is that God knew about our free will choices long before the creation whereby He elected us. God knew before time began that Noah was an extra special man of faith that would be devoted to Him. That is why God commanded Noah to build the Ark and command Noah to put animals within it because God knew he would obey. God knew that Noah loved God before the creation. God had a relationship or walk with God. Noah's strong relationship with God helped to be a great strength for his family spiritually. I believe God wrote within the Torah that He shut Noah within the Ark (as a focus on Noah) because of Noah's way in loving God. Noah was a great man of faith. God was focusing in on that. Showing us that we can also be great men of faith whereby our families can benefit from our walk. For if we are to be great men of faith, we have to let go and let God. We have to let God shut the doors that lead us to being tied to the old world. It's talking to the man of God. Noah was a man of God.

Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord (Genesis 6:8). While God established his covenant with Noah and his family (i.e. the word "thee" means "you all") (Genesis 6:18), God commanded Noah to build the Ark. While God might have talked and or walked with Noah's family, it is not recorded in Scripture. Verse 22 confirms that Noah obeyed God in building the Ark (Not his family even though his family was no doubt involved). While God declares that "thee" (Noah and his family) have been righteous before Him (Genesis 7:1), God commanded Noah to cooperate in placing two of every unclean animal and seven pairs of every clean animal into the Ark. We then learn in verse 5 (Genesis 7:5) that it was Noah who obeyed what God commanded Him. Why? Because the command was given directly to Noah whereby Noah gave God's command to his family (Because his family is a part of his life). For Noah was the head of the household. For Noah got the animals and his family onboard the Ark; And the Lord shut him in (Genesis 7:16). The Lord shut the man of God who was in charge (In following God's commands) into the Ark.

Genesis 7:16

Why would the Bible just say "him" (Noah) when we know his whole family and all the animals were shut in by the Lord? I believe there is a reason for that. I believe that reason is for the fact that God was giving commands to Noah, and Noah's faithfulness to God's commands led to God being the finisher of Noah's faithfulness in this situation. For Jesus is the author and finisher of our faith. For God deals with us individually. Our God is personal. Transforming us and talking to us on an individual basis. God shut .... him ..... in. God loved Noah. And Noah's love and faithfulness towards God resulted in his family being blessed spiritually (By the example of faith that Noah lived). Noah was a .... the man of God .... who was an example for his family. For today, the man of God teaches their children the Holy Scriptures and trains his children to know all about the Scriptures. One's children can be righteous because of their father being a great man of God.

And yet they still all had "free will." And none of them came into existence (either spiritually or physically) until they were all conceived in the womb. God simply knows everything and He exists outside of our linear concept of time. For Isaiah 46:10 says He declares the End from the Beginning. Meaning, He has already seen it all already. So nothing can surprise God.

And the flood was forty days upon the earth;

Next to the Number 7, the Number 40 is probably one of the most famous of all Bible Numbers.
(Note: 1 item below on this list is not related to the Bible, but it is an interesting fact none the less).

• The rains (in Noah's day) fell for 40 days and nights (Genesis 7:4).
• Israel ate Manna for 40 years (Exodus 16:35).

Steven tells us about how Moses was in the wilderness of Mount Sinai for 40 years before encountering the burning bush.
(Acts 7:30 KJV) And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush.​

The Number 40 generally means it is a time of testing or a period of trial or a means of purification. The rain that lasted for 40 days and 40 nights was a means by which the world was purified and it was trial of patience for Noah (In being inside the Ark during the storm).

...and the waters increased, and bare up the ark, and it was lift up above the earth.

The waters increased (i.e. the water level rised) and the Ark was lifted up above the Earth (i.e. the ground of the Earth). Two parallels that immediately come to my mind here. The priests that bear the Ark of the Covenant had lifted it up (so as to move it) and stood with their feet in the Jordan river (Joshua 3:12). However, when the priests stood in the water, the waters of the river moved away so that they could then cross on dry ground (Joshua 3:17) (Which parallels the Flood waters abating for the Ark to rest on dry ground) (And which also parallels the Red Sea crossing). In fact, speaking of the Red Sea crossing, which involved Moses, we can see a loose parallel of the Ark and the Flood when Moses was a young child, too. For when Moses (as a youth) was placed within a basket and sent down the river, it was done as a way of escape and so as to save his life (Just as the Ark was created as a way of escape and so as to save those 8 of whom God found righteous).

I will come back to discuss this part of the passage in just a moment because it is a point that is repeated with the use of other words in the upcoming text.

"and the ark went upon the face of the waters."

Again, what does the Ark symbolize? Jesus Christ (God Almighty).

In the beginning, God moved upon the face of the waters before He brought forth the creation (Genesis 1:2). For in the beginning was the Word.... and the Word was God (John 1:1). All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made (John 1:3). This pictures how God is creating a new world for Noah just as He did back in Genesis 1.

And the waters prevailed, and were increased greatly upon the earth; ... And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered. Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered.

And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of beast, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth, and every man: All in whose nostrils was the breath of life, of all that was in the dry land, died. And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark. (Genesis 7:17-23).

Some today wrongfully believe that the Flood was a local flood and not a Global Flood. However, the Bible warns against being ignorant about how the world (that was then) was overflowed with water and had perished.

2 Peter 3:5-7
"For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men."

For a simple plain reading of Genesis 7 makes it unmistakable that the Flood was Global.

#1. All the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered.

#2. 15 cubits upward did the waters prevail from beyond the point of covering the highest hills (& the mountains were covered).

#3. All flesh died, both of fowl of heaven and creeping things. Now, think about this. If the flood was local, the birds would just fly away from the storms. In fact, why even take birds on the Ark, if the flood was local? Also, what prevented creeping things (bugs) from existing in other parts of the land if it says they were destroyed from the Earth?​

It's obvious this was a Global Flood.

#1. Today, people can find seashells on top of the highest mountains. This is from the global flood. However, if the Earth was supposedly millions of years old (being covered in water at one time), then these seashells would have eroded away by the weathering of the elements over a period of millions of years. Today, a person can extract seashells from off the highest mountains.
