Twitter is the only social site that uses a format like text messaging on a cell phone. You can only use
140 characters.
Text messaging is the most popular form of communication in the world. Twitter taps into this huge
market of billions. There are times when twitter is slow or offline due to massive traffic that overloads
the servers.
It is interesting that text messages were thought of but not able to be used. Then a guy noticed that
the text messages could be compressed into a small data stream. This small data stream was small
enough to use the stand by channel all cell phones have so providers can use it to update phones.
At first the data broke down as it was sent. By experimenting, they learned that due to the limited
ability of the stand by channel used to update cell phones, only a maximum of 160 characters could
be sent. Text messaging was born.
