5 Questions: The Holiday Edition

1. What is your favorite Christmas song/carol?
2. What is the absolute worse thing you think is served on the table when you get together with people for Thanksgiving?
3. What is your favorite holiday tradition?
4. Do you open gifts Christmas Eve or Morning? Why?
5. What is your favorite holiday memory?
Good thread to revive.

1) Let's see. I absolutely love Todd Agnew's album Do you see what I see which is mostly original songs from the perspective of different people in the Christmas story. I also really like the song Good King Wenceslas (and yes I can sing all the verses). And most of the traditional church hymns carols I like too.

2) Most thanksgiving food is wonderful, but this year I'm trying to eat lower carb so anything with carbs is a threat, danger, temptation, etc. (might have to limit myself to one piece of pumpkin pie because of that).

3) Our family doesn't have many holiday traditions (though I liked the one about making mary, joseph, and the baby travel to the manger scene). One thing we did once though that was cool was called the Holy Walk which is basically a group set up a huge farm field area as a recreation of Bethlehem town and you walked through like you were someone coming into town for the census. Wouldn't mind doing that again.

4) Yes. When there was lots of family stuff going on or we were traveling to grandparents we usually discussed when we would have "family Christmas" and open the gifts at home. This year it'll be just roomie and me giving each other a few gifts and we'll probably do that Christmas morning.

5) Well I don't know about favorite, but I remember one year when I was pretty little being at church on Christmas Eve just down the road from my grandparents and when we got back to their house Santa had come early and all the presents were just strewn over the coffee table. I also remember proving my suspicions that Santa didn't exist when I found a present wrapped up and hidden in my parents' closet with a tag saying it was from Santa. Also the year just after college when my parents came to my apartment for Christmas and it snowed more than usual so we couldn't go anywhere. Dad and I were very content to read our new books and poor extroverted Mom was every five minutes asking if someone wanted to play a game or do something.

1. What is your favorite Christmas song/carol?

hard to say. it's either: greensleeves/what child is this? or oh holy night.

2. What is the absolute worse thing you think is served on the table when you get together with people for Thanksgiving?

that entirely disgusting green bean casserole that is usually topped with vacuum-bag-contents.

3. What is your favorite holiday tradition?

spending time with friends, wearing lots of red, snow-full play and fun, and finally, that it's all because of Savior born in a barn and the incredible meaning behind that message - reminiscing a lot about that joyful event and the meaning of the events for which we celebrate that holiday.

4. Do you open gifts Christmas Eve or Morning? Why?

christmas day, usually. the night before is just too soon. i like surprises, and am willing to wait for them. : )

5. What is your favorite holiday memory?

the majority of great ones are when i was spending them with my grandparents.

however, i have one funny one. my brother used to wake up very, very early. he'd pass out early, but be awake early as well. i remember one time, my brother woke me up at like 4:30 in the morning and was like, "time to get up and open the presents". i remember telling him it was WAY too early and to go back to bed. i was probably 9, and he was 5 or so. so he proceeded to come back every five minutes for awhile. then eventually he disappeared and i had thought he went back to bed.

instead, he started a small fire in his room, because he was a little chilly. during that time, we exclusively heated with firewood and so he saw a lot of examples of how to build one. he had gathered some reasonable items and just gave it a try on his bedroom floor. nonetheless, everyone had to get up then.

smoke detectors are excellent, effective, adrenaline-producing alarm clocks.

another year that is memorable for me is when my grandmother gave me a doll, and then a trunk full of handmade clothing, that was all made from scraps of clothing she'd made for me. it was pretty cool, and i would give anything to have that gift still today.

1. What is your favorite Christmas song/carol?

John Lennon-Merry Christmas (War is over).
Love that one.

2. What is the absolute worse thing you think is served on the table when you get together with people for Thanksgiving?
*Thinks really hard, GOSH DARN IT. this isn't working! *
GREEN OLIVES. UGH.
It's like eating a bile filled funnel. hahhaha.

3. What is your favorite holiday tradition?
Generally church the night before. I LOVE Christmas Eve services.
But on terms of Christmas day, the mornings are generally where the present opening commences and then from the rest of the day I probably work because my family is like super disconnected...soooooo. It's basically a fog from there, and then you hug people and say 'Merry Christmas', and shake hands with crying family members and have conversations with people about how much life can suck on the holidays, and then you get the occasional positive person who has grown accustom to the fact that they don't really have family around and then you feel a kinship forming and maybe even a little bit of enlightenment there.

4. Do you open gifts Christmas Eve or Morning? Why?
Yes. Because I wanna.

5. What is your favorite holiday memory?
The random gifts I gave people. lol.

2. What is the absolute worse thing you think is served on the table when you get together with people for Thanksgiving?
It grosses me out when people serve giblets, even if they're hidden in the stuffing. I mean, I eat the stuffing, but I have to pretend it's not what I know it is, which makes me appear to be zoning out, and then people are like "Earth to Cristen, pass the potatoes...".
Sweet potatoes also are vile.

3. What is your favorite holiday tradition?
Christmas Eve candlelight service.
The local Holiday Drive- the radio station hosts it at the mall, and people donate food, clothes, toys, coats, or money. It's the only time of year I'll listen to that station.
I kind of just really like everything about this time of year.

4. Do you open gifts Christmas Eve or Morning? Why?
Both- because we usually spend Christmas Eve with a bunch of different family at their houses, and then Christmas morning at home by ourselves.

5. What is your favorite holiday memory?
I have a lot...hmm...

Our first Christmas with our son. He was 10 months old by then, and I loved watching the wonder on his face when he looked at the tree, and I loved sitting with him in my lap while he tried to tear paper off his presents. And then the joy I could see in our family...it had been a really long time since any of them had a little one around for Christmas, and I hope my kids both one day understand how happy they made a lot of people just by existing, just by being their smiling little selves.

1. What movie deserves a sequel?
I'm not sure if there are any movies that I liked that don't already have a sequel. Maybe a Liar Liar 2, just to see where everyone is after all this time. I don't know... that's a stretch, really.

2. What one toy would you like to throw repeatedly at a brick wall?
When I was a kid, I used to have those small WWF wrestling figures. One day I got bored and decided to hit some of them with a baseball bat. Looking back, that was a horrible choice, because I ended feeling bad that I couldn't play with them anymore. So, if I'm repeatedly throwing something against a wall, it needs to be meaningful: an Atari. Those things were pretty useless :)

3. What is one thing you always wanted as a kid, but never got?
This is a hard question to answer. I was, admittedly, a pretty spoiled child (not too proud of that fact, actually), so I don't really remember wanting something that I didn't already have. As sad as that may seem..

4. Where do you not mind waiting?
I'm pretty comfortable waiting anywhere. I can always find something to do to occupy my mind...

5. What is your most impressive car repair skill?
I can: change a tire, rotate tires; change the oil, fill/refill liquids, change a headlight, replace wiper blades. I guess I'm pretty handy if I need to bed. :)

1. What movie deserves a sequel?
- Crash

2. What one toy would you like to throw repeatedly at a brick wall?
- Anything that my child has that makes noise? Okay seriously... I think it was a doll that talked, and it was creepy and would just talk in the middle of the night...

3. What is one thing you always wanted as a kid, but never got?
- I was a pretty simple kid actually. I cannot recall anything at the moment.

4. Where do you not mind waiting?
- I am a pretty patient person, so waiting for others (like lines and things) is not a big deal. Give me some Wi-Fi and coffee and I am golden.

5. What is your most impressive car repair skill?
- Daddy was a mechanic when I was young (I was the only child for many many years)... I learned how to do rebuild a transmission, change my own tires, oil, etc. Today I can do most things myself if I wanted but I prefer not to... I guess I got girly. However if necessary and now that dad is up there in age, he will help me through things if I need it (like replacing brakes or when I tried to fix a rod knock in an engine).

1. What's one item in your house that you keep meaning to get rid of, but for some reason never do?
- At the top of this list is kids clothing and old shoes of theirs. Second close runner up is the mess outside that I have asked to be removed long before the separation (old wood and stuff.)

2. How many DVD's (oooorrrrr blu-rays) do you have?
- Hmmmm Maybe 15? Most of them are from the kids or what the husband hasn't taken during the separation.

3. What items are on the top shelf in your fridge?

4. What's your favorite out-door winter activity?
- We are supposed to have fun outdoors during the winter? Seriously I think the ice festivals we have are my favorite thing. Watching the amazing sculptures that are made out of ice are just so awesome.

1. What's one item in your house that you keep meaning to get rid of, but for some reason never do?

And then most likely church pamphlets, boxes, binders, half used highlighters without caps.

3. What items are on the top shelf in your fridge?
Pulp orange juice, organic carrot juice, grapefruit, almond milk, homemade pickles!

4. What's your favorite out-door winter activity?
Kayaking, archery, shootin guns, runnin' away from the cops.

5. How many times in your life have you been stung by bees (wasps, yellow jackets, other stinging critters...)?
Stinging critters various occasions, yellow jackets...every time I go to the store and accidentally run into a coat hanger wrack lol.

Lots of things...um...the kids, the cats...
No, but really, I have this quesadilla maker machine thingy, and I've only ever used it a couple times (I admit it's handy, but we don't do quesadillas often enough to *need* it). I meant to give it away like, 5 years ago. It's still in the basement.

2. How many DVD's (oooorrrrr blu-rays) do you have?
Eep, I just counted...217.

3. What items are on the top shelf in your fridge?
Half gallon of milk, apple juice, iced tea, baking soda, cold pressed Mexican vanilla, a jar of salsa, a block of cheddar, a bag of flour.

4. What's your favorite out-door winter activity?
Building dozens of tiny snowmen.
Sledding.
Making designs in fresh snow with my foot prints.

5. How many times in your life have you been stung by bees (wasps, yellow jackets, other stinging critters...)?
Twice- once on the leg when I was little, once on the bottom of my toe at the swimming pool.

1. What is your favorite Christmas song/carol?

For me, it's the performance moreso than the song, though I really like O Holy Night, but I love God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen by Barenaked Ladies and Sarah Mclachlan and Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth by Bing Crosby and David Bowie. :)

2. What is the absolute worse thing you think is served on the table when you get together with people for Thanksgiving?

Green Bean Casserole

3. What is your favorite holiday tradition?

I don't have one.

4. Do you open gifts Christmas Eve or Morning? Why?

Christmas Day, though we used to visit my Grandma and Grandpa and open the on Christmas Eve

5. What is your favorite holiday memory?

My mom and dad purchased me a Barbie and the full bathroom set, complete with all those maddening pieces that are destined to get lost and they had set it up under the Christmas tree, with all the little brushes and such put on the dressing table and all that jazz. Well, since I believed in Santa Claus at the time and it was from "Santa", I quietly gathered it all together and snuck into their room to set it up by their bed before waking them up, saying, "Mom, Dad, look what Santa brought me!"
