We all know the standard ideas that Christians have about how to reach out to people, to our communities, our neighbors, etc.

There's volunteering.
There's donating money or goods.
There's lending a hand to someone in need.
There's lending a hand just because it's a nice thing to do.

These are all valid things, they're all good things, and they're all things that even the World sees as good, giving, generous.

They're also all kind of generic, cliche things that anyone can do.

I would love to hear something different- what types of actions do you take that deviate from the norm? In what ways do you take your faith from within yourself and share it, show it, teach it, live it- utilizing your own unique set of skills, talents, and interests for the glory of God?

*I don't intend this thread as some kind of spiritual bragging session- I'm honestly simply interested in hearing how y'all turn your one-of-a-kind personality and talents into service for the Lord and reaching out to others to share/show your faith.

I love your thread MissCris.

I hope it would never turn into a spiritual bragging session but I think it would help if we all showed scenarios of how we expressed faith to others so it could motivate us and show us how much we need to be the "light of this world" to people living in darkness.

I think every action done in the name of God and for the glory of God is valuable to God.

We may not see every little thing someone else does, but God does. However we are to encourage each other to run the race, to not be consumed with the things of the world and to set ourselves apart.

I can understand if people have constraints of their own - money, time and just major pressures that they can't get out of and so can't do things like donate huge amounts to charity or go out there feeding children in a third world country.

But I think small things - like sharing a smile with other people or talking about God, thanking God, being gracious etc is a blessing to others.

It's about not being consumed with ourselves or our desire but being on fire for God.

Praying for others , caring for others and sharing Christ with others.

My biggest challenge in my life personally is to share Christ with my friends. They are mostly atheist or unbelievers and in the past I have been mocked for my faith in Jesus.

When I was in the USA though, I tried to tell my friend about God. We spent some time reading the Bible and I gifted her a Bible while I was there.

Before we flew back at the airport, we sat together, reading Psalm 23.

Every opportunity I have with her - I see it as a moment to share Christ and His love with her. She responds to me with so much love as well, it sometimes breaks my heart when I feel that I am not getting anywhere.

Someone from CC here told me recently, that sometimes it's not our job to harvest - that is lead people to Christ, but to just sow seeds and water..

So I think our job is to go without expectation and just show Christ's love and leave it in His hands.

At the end of the day it is HIM who has to be glorified. We are only vessels. And at the end of the day it is about showing to love OTHERS and not about SELF.

You know FallingLeaves, this is interesting, sometimes the experiences that we go through build us up to be sympathetic and understanding to others that we couldn't possibly have been.

When I found that my heart was broken and learning how God healed me, it was interesting how I came across many more people who were in the same state.

I was filled with so much compassion and understanding because I went through the same thing, then I just knew the right words to tell them and was just led to pray... everything is for the glory of God.

He is so amazing and awesome. He cares for His people.

Call me old fashioned but I do enjoy writing encouraging letters to my friend/family/church family. Sometimes the letters arrive on the right day and time. God works through us in mysterious ways!lol

I think that's huge- something "small" like a letter can have a big impact on a person.

People tend to overlook things like this, not really considering that they can be serving God and letting Christ shine through them by doing "little" things.

For me, one thing I struggle with, in handing out grace is when I notice people using their faith and themselves as a means to project a faux spirituality.

Perhaps I am too critical, but I notice a dichotomy, in which people aren't really being honest.

It's like an image that they portray to the rest of the world - of being gracious, kind and whatever, always praying but yet, when you observe them closely, they're not very different in any way.

They're just as shallow, just as self absorbed.

I think it's okay to not have views that are always agreeable to everyone else as long as when we stand before God we are being completely honest to Him and in a way to ourselves.

It's not about being popular and well liked.

It's not about what the rest of the world thinks of you but what God thinks of you.

It's not YOU who has to be glorified, but GOD.

It's not YOU who is perfect, but GOD.

So when we bring Christ to others, it's like, "Hey, look at me, I was broken too. I was lost too and look what God did for a wretch like me."

Yes! That's why it gets to be so...just mind numbing...to see the same acts of service over and over done by the same pseudo-spiritual people, done the same way, until they've turned serving God into something boring and commonplace.

That's why I'm so interested to hear ways people change it up, put their hearts really in it, how they put the skills God blessed them with to use for His purposes, to help His people and to bring people to Him :)

I love to share Christ with children. I feel this is my calling. Little ones get their idea of who God is by watching those who care about them. Their parents, their teachers, people who reach out to them. A small child can receive a look of love, acceptance, encouragement, interest in their life, and know that God loves them, is interested in them, and cares about them.

I do this as often as I can. Hug a child. Get down on their level and talk to them. Smile at them. Play with them. Get them involved in what I'm doing. Develop relationships with them. Show them Christ. And when I see them running down the hall crying "Miss Angie!" with hugs and details about their day, and pictures they've drawn for me... well. Could there be anything more wonderful? :)

I just show love. Be it in buying some food for a homeless child on the street or even chatting up the taxi driver. I believe that we must the "light of the world" is the love of God. And that is what we are called to do, as Christians. This, I believe, is my calling.

It is amazing to see how people reciprocate to an act of love. When I offer to help an elderly lady with her bags or gift a chocolate bar to a homeless child, their eyes light up. Their face breaks into a smile and within a moment the wrinkles of worry and hurt disappear. Have you seen how a withering plant responds to the rain? It immediately straightens up and within a day it sprouts a few green leaves. That is how people respond to an act of love. The whole world is thirsting for love. People are dying with no love in their lives. And this is not the time to stand on a pulpit and preach about God's judgment. It is the time to get out there on the streets and show the love through your acts. The salvation will come on its own.

I have never preached the gospel to anybody. But I have shown the love of God. And people sometimes open up on their own as I keep talking to them. That is when I tell them to search for God. I tell them there is hope for them in this world and that all is not lost. I just sow the seeds in their heart. I don't hold a sign reading 'This way, for the true God!'. I let God do the watering and the harvesting because I know He will!

Aaah. I understand MissCris, but I slightly disagree with you.

I don't think any boring or commonplace service is of any less value to God... I get putting our heart and soul in it only for God and things like that, but I am wondering whether we can even judge anyone's motives.

Thanks again though, for giving that platform to let people reflect and wonder about this :)

Oh no! No, I didn't mean that God would see any acts of service as either boring or commonplace or less valuable- what I meant was that often times, people will do the same things over and over, and they turn it into drudgery themselves, in their own minds. I was just saying that for me, it gets to be hard to watch people with that attitude, doing these things for God without any real joy in what they do.

To answer my own question-

I think God uses my experiences for His purpose, His glory. Of course I believe that's true for every Christian, that what they go through and how they handle it and the end result is all a way the Lord teaches us, and those who are paying attention to us...

I guess what I mean is, I'm so open to sharing my mistakes and lessons I've learned from them, whereas others are far more private than I am (which isn't a bad thing and I often wish that I would just shut up already). But I've been thinking a lot about it the last couple of days, and noticing how people respond to a lot of what I say, and I feel like what I share, and how I share it...is God working through me. I can only take wild guesses at how He's using that, but I feel very strongly that He is using me in this way.

It's kind of uncomfortable. It's kind of embarrassing sometimes, reading back through my posts or remembering conversations I've had. But I hope that, in what I say, people can see God at work, and I hope that eventually, my life will be a testimony to God's grace, and His power to overcome anything.

I also hope that makes sense and isn't assuming too much.

I've been pondering this thread and, like Lynx, in light of the powerful warnings of Matthew 6, I have felt awkward about posting here.

That said, I think that Cris' intent of this thread is to provide others with ideas of how they might serve in His Name and for HIS GLORY. So, with the intent of God alone being shared and glorified, I offer this list of things God has put on my heart over the years:

Love. Always. Whenever you have a chance.

When God puts someone on your heart, pray, but then give them a call, a card, an email.

LISTEN to people. Especially people others rarely do. It's one of the simplest ways to show someone that they really matter.
Live Christ. People are watching you. It's more important than you realize.

Admit your mistakes, especially to those who don't yet belong to Christ. So many of them believe they have to "get right" on their own before they come to them.

Pray for unbelievers. Send them a card telling them that God loves them if you know they are going through a rough time. You'd be surprised at how many people believe there IS a God, but can't understand that He loves them. It means a lot and God can use it to soften hearts. Planting seed.

If you see someone going through a rough time, give them a Bible that will be understandable to them. Pray over it before you do.

Clean someone's home. Rake someone's leaves. Mow someone's grass.

Check on an elderly neighbor.

Stop by the hospital to visit someone you know or even someone you DON'T know if God leads you there. Ask if they'd be comfortable enough to allow you to pray with them.

Can you sing or play an instrument? Do that. Nursing home are a wonderful place to share Christ in music. It helps establish relationships with the elderly, which opens doors.

If you know someone is a fulltime caregiver to someone who is critically ill, offer to sit with the person to give the caregiver some time off. Read, pray, sing to the person. Or maybe they'd just like a fresh face to talk with.

Are there lonely singles at your church (especially elderly folks)? Get to know something about them, their interests....then pray for them on a regular basis. And, from time to time, especially around the holidays, leave a special anonymous blessing of some sort for them.

Rock a child as often as you can and let them know that Jesus loves them. They can't hear that enough.

Share your home with a child who has no one and nothing. Share your heart with them as well.

Teach or be a Sunday School/kids camp/VBS helper. There are seemingly never enough. The burn out rate is very high.

Clean your church for free.

Can you cook/bake? Help with special events at your church or suggest something. Take something special to those who can't leave home. For those of us who routinely cook too much, sharing with elderly neighbors can be such a blessing, not just to them. You'd be surprised how much you can learn from them. :)

Anonymously provide food/clothing to struggling families, especially those with small children.

I know we aren't supposed to send money through the mail, but do it anyway. Put it in an unsigned card and mail it to someone God puts on your heart.

This may sound silly to some folks, but help rescue animals. When God gives us dominion over things, we are responsible for their care. Show mercy.

Do you know people who can't drive or don't have a car? Offer to drive them if they ever need you, especially to church, medical appts, to the grocery store, etc. Or just invite them out to lunch. :)

Give out of your abundance. God blessed you. Share the blessing. Things that are stuffed in the back of cabinets/closets for years bless no one.

Do you know someone who is dying? You'd be surprised how many people avoid them, even loved ones. Hold a hand. No one should die alone if it can be helped.

ENCOURAGE your Pastor and pray for him.

PRAY for the leaders of your nation and community.

Do all you can to shut down negativity and gossip within your church/the family of God.

Be an encourager, not a Pharisee. We are supposed to lift one another up, not criticize one another. A critical spirit dishonors the Lord.

Find out what your gifts are and talk with your church leadership as to how to put them to work.

Run for office or volunteer for godly people who will. We can't be a godly nation without godly leadership.

Be a peacemaker.

Encourage the restoration of relationships.

REMEMBER: Sometimes things you DO NOT DO can have more impact for Christ than things you DO. Ponder that. Let the Holy Spirit explain it to you. :)

Write a book.

Write a song.

Donate Christian literature to the local library. People complain all the time about the lack of these materials in our libraries. Maybe we should stop hording them in our homes.

Start a prayer chain if your church doesn't have one.

Make sure the sick, those with small children and the elderly have a cellphone. You can buy them a phone and install time on it for less than $100. Then send them a reload card from time to time.

Donate toys and magazines to hospitals.

Donate stuffed animals to local police, firefighters and EMS personal. You'd be surprised the impact they can have on a sick/scared child. While you're there, pray for the emergency workers. They need it more than you could imagine.

I guess that's a pretty good start. I just got home from work a bit ago and I'm tired, so I'm gonna stop typing now. :)

Be a blessing!

Jullianna-

Thank you :) That's an excellent list.

I want to apologize to those who have skimmed this thread but skipped posting because it would feel awkward or boastful- I absolutely didn't intend it that way, at all. I meant it to be a place to share ideas (like Jullianna said), share fresh ways we can use our specific skill sets to serve God.

Buuuuut thank you to those who did post :)

We understood YOUR heart, Cris. It's just that we dreaded someone coming along who simply didn't GET it and ...well...you know... :D
