I love the Harry Potter books. The films less, which I am sometimes too dark. In a German forum about Harry Potter has been reported that a Catholic; who writes books against feminism and gender debate, condemned the Harry Potter books as "satanic". What do you think? Is Harry Potter just good entertainment literature, or it has a satanic origin and influence?

It is my fault. Her name is Kuby, not Kubik.

Well i guess its all about how you look at things. While witchcraft is originated from satanism that doesn't make harry potter evil, in order for it to be evil it would have to be able to lead ppl away from God. I absolutely love the harry potter series both movies and books but I love God with every fiber of my being.

This is false logic. Just because something doesn't affect me then there's nothing wrong with it. That ignores the idea that other people may be affected by something, as if you are the sole evidence.

I wouldn't go so far as to call it satanic, but it is based in witchcraft and the bible warns about witchcraft.

Leviticus 19:31 - Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I [am] the LORD your God.

Some of the most seemingly innocent things are inherently and wholely evil. Harry Potter absolutely has the power to turn people away from God and does so to children from a very young age. It offers nothing to the kingdom of God but an example of the kingdom of Satan. Even simple distractions like "not-so-evil" tv shows are enough to be considered harmful.

Even Disney movies are crazy bad if you really pay attention to what they teach. Removal of parental authority, if the parents are even there at all, rewarding disobedient children (every Disney movie ever made), and effectively dismantling the structure and hierarchy of the family unit in the mind of the kids watching them.

Harry Potter is really no different. Harmless as it may be to some, to others it could have devastating long-term consequences regarding their belief systems and belief development. Maybe a kid growing up obsessed with Harry Potter gets older and decides real witchcraft isn't much different than the series they loved as a kid and because the dangers were not taught to them by the books and films as a kid, they venture into the real thing, solidifying their false belief system and leading them further and further away.

There is a seductive spirit operating within witchcraft. The idea that one has power over others, neglecting the Lord Jesus' guidance or grace, is nothing but rebelliousness.

I totally understand Sister Gerlinde that it's just simple entertainment to you. And I agree it is for other people as well. It's just not for me. I am too aware of its deception and mockery toward God for it to be entertaining to me personally. I've witnessed too much demonic activity from my youth for me to take it lightly. I want no part of it in my life now.

But we can't just pick on the Harry Potter-type movies without naming the other deceptive media society eats up. What about movies & books condoning casual sex disguised as "romance", alcoholism & drugs disguised as "partying", mockery of God disguised as "comedy", disposable relationships, corrupt morals, perversions, etc.? There's not really many books or movies that are truly pure.

But God forbid I tell anyone what to read or what to watch. I am just saying that for me personally, there's not much entertainment in the media. I love to study the Word regularly so that takes a lot of my time. Other than that, I read science articles, history, classics, news, amusing tidbits online. I don't watch TV much so there are no shows that I follow. I like watching a movie if it doesn't offend the Spirit of God or for that matter, insult my "intelligence".

And I love to write. Poems, songs, short stories, prose, whatever. And just so you know I'm not some boring old lady, what I DO find entertaining is running down the river's edge chasing frogs and salamanders, skipping stones across the water, fishing for bass or trout with an ultra light rod and only 4 lb test (you got to give the fish a fighting chance, ya know?), trekking up a hill like a happy-go-lucky child, climbing trees (yes, at my age!), filling my jeans pockets with stones that I find, walking in all kinds of weather (and the windier it is, the better!), checking out the sky at night with an awesome telescope, and whatever else I can find to do outdoors. There's no end to the entertainment outside, I think. :)

Welcome, Gerlinde!

I know that people have become embroiled in witchcraft by reading The Chronicles of Narnia and even the Bible. Our sinful nature can corrupt anything. I've read the Harry Potter novels (books 3 and 7 are my favourites) and watched all eight movies (the fifth is my favourite) and believe they contain a lot of Christian meaning in them (some of it intended by Rowling and other parts probably subconsciously). The witchcraft presented in the series is more the fantasy/fairytale kind. Very different to that forbidden by the Bible. And the bits that do convey anything akin to real world witchcraft are forbidden to the characters and recognised as something to fight/defend yourself and your loved ones against, not something to invite into your life.

Harry Potter is popular fiction with high standards. The magic / sorcery is only a help to tell the story. In reality it aims to grow, the importance of friendships, and how stupid it is to marginalize others. One of my favorite quotes from the books is this one:

In dreams, we enter a world that’s entirely our own. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Alkaban - Quote by Albus Dumbledore

I use to read the Dragonlance Chronicle books and also (you guessed it :) ) Lord of the rings but it was as if God showed me the demonic undertones in these fantasies and I got rid of them…

Gandalf, bro, then that is your own personal conviction but The Lord of the Rings was written by J.R.R. Tolkien, a strong Christian. It's not a world into the occult.

There is a saying “if it walks like a duck and it quack like a duck it must be… a duck” :) if we look at the demonic undertones in these books (and also pictured in the movies) we can clearly see a hidden agenda. But you are right, it is my
personal conviction and I am not trying to convince anybody…

There's no hidden agenda with the Harry Potter series, except perhaps one to sell more merchandise (ala the movies etc.) I'm a Christian, I have the Holy Spirit living in me also and I've never been convicted in this area (as I have with some other things). The Onion is satire news, not the real thing.

Rowling is Anglican like C.S. Lewis, not Catholic.
My comment was about a certain german catholic (mentioned by OP) who condemned the Harry Potter books as 'satanic,' not about C.S. Rowling.
