Can anyone tell me why JESUS said this?

Well, most people think that when JESUS said that while HE was dying on the CROSS, that it was because GOD couldn't look at JESUS because HE had just taken on all the sins of the world, but this is not the case. In actuality, JESUS was teaching us, even while HE was dying on The CROSS!

One thing to notice is that JESUS never called FATHER GOD. HE always referred to HIM as FATHER.

Psalm 22 was written 1000 years before The Cruscifixion and it completely prophesied every detail of what happened when JESUS died on the CROSS, down to the very words of the chief priest and how the Roman soldiers would gamble for HIS clothing. It even described how HE would be pierced!

JESUS was teaching us Psalms 22 which prophesied of his Cruscifixion and all the details to exactness 1000 years before. And this HE did, even as HE was dying on The CROSS!

And I thought you were seriously asking a question. Instead I find you condemn a bunch of peoples beliefs, and tell us what we should believe. I should have known.

That is not condemning anyone's belief. Condemn is the wrong word. We are all here together to learn and share in the love of CHRIST. If you read Psalm 22, you will find out that it states every detail of what happened on the CROSS. It is provable that Psalm 22 was written 1000 years before HE died for us. If you think about it, what HE was doing was showing us that the prophesy written in Psalm 22 was coming to pass. If a person reads that Psalm and then reads the account on the CROSS, how can they help but believe. HE did that for us!

I fail to see your point. God prophesied in Ps 22 and fulfilled it on the cross. So does that erase the underlying premise that Jesus spoke the words because of the prophesy or because God turned His back on His Son when Jesus took our sins upon Him? One does not negate the other but rather confirms the other. Read Ps 22 more deeply and see that there is more there than you have gleaned to date.

Don't these 2 statements conflict with each other?

The point is that it was prophesied. Most people don't realize that. Also, a key thing to notice is that JESUS never called FATHER GOD. But in this case HE did. It was because HE was quoting Psalm 22. You are welcome to believe what you wish. There is no bad intention in my post. I simply post in order to share knowledge. I don't like to use a premise regarding GOD'S WORD. GOD'S WORD only says one thing. There is no room for interpretation. Again, if more people are aware that Psalm 22 prophesied the details of the CROSS all the way down to what the chief priest said and how the Roman soldiers gambled for his clothing, then they realize that Psalm 22 was written 1000 years before, it may build their faith and even cause some to come to CHRIST. I'm sorry that you feel the way you do.

Reminds me of the illustration of the man sailing to the new world and looks out across the ocean and opines about all the water in his view. The mate next to him chimes in that he is only looking at the surface.

Gods word is like an ocean vast and deep. The deeper you go the better it gets.

My comment

Know that Jesus is both God and human

That He came to demonstrate something to a lost world of humans

He did not forsake Himself, but was showing humanity the destructive nature of sin and that we need to realize this

We are forsaken by "God" because of our sinful nature and deserve to die, but if we listen and turn to Him for our salvation, we can live

Exactly what the Son of God did ..... don't forget the rest of the story .... Jesus did not die, and He lives

So can a human take the same course if one gets the message and acts upon it

Thats not the problem.

The problem is you ASKED if anyone could tell you why jesus said this,

then you gave your answer and said everyone else is wrong.

That was wrong my friend,

He must not have read Ps 22. it is a cry of groaning, A cry of anguish.

We can't understand, maybe never will understand, what Jesus went through in that moment, When God the father forsook him.

He was talking to his father as God, because it was God who was directing his wrath on his son for the salvation of mankind. Not the father.

Sometimes a father has to do his duty, and play his role. no matter how much it pains him, Imagine the pain of the father in this moment also.

All creation witnessed the true love of God (plural) who can ever question Gods motives again after this, this is what Psalms 22 is all about.

Satan is defeated, his lie is destroyed.

I didn't intend it that way. I got used to sharing knowledge a long time ago by starting it as a question. Somehow it always made it more easily for people to remember. I wasn't trying to discount anyone. My purpose was simply to share with the people that HE made it possible to share with. If I do post that way in the future, please don't take it negative. It's just an old habit that I developed from sharing the WORD over time. This is the first time I ever received negative input from it. I'll have to think about it for a while.

Just remember, Alot of people do that in here with bad motives, you probably got caught up in that. Forgive me if I came across stern.

I too try to start sometimes by asking a question to get someone to think sometimes. I guess it is the way you worded it.

I appreciate you letting me know. I will try to make it more appropriate next time. I do have a few posts that start with a question that I would like to post later. I hope they do not turn out negative in any way. GOD Willing! :)

That aside...it WAS PROPHECY in PS 22 that the Father would not look at Him because of our sin.
Don't come in here deeming to teach all a lesson. If you have an opinion to share that you can support with scripture, fine. But you miss the mark in not understanding that the Father Would not look at Him because of taking on our sins.

FYI: you state, veryelect (rather a prideful name IMO) that you were save "in the last age". What the heck does that mean? If you cannot give a specific date as to when you ASKED the Lord Jesus to be your Lord and Savior, then it is questionable as to whether or not you are. That is not to say that you don't love Him, but you need to have a PERSONAL relationship which involves obedience and humility.

Why did Jesus say "My God, my God, why has thou forsaken me?"

Well, for one, there is a big difference between making an assertion and asking a question. Secondly, Jesus was referencing Scripture as a fulfillment of prophecy (Psalm 22:1). Thirdly, Jesus also said these words as if it was you and me in His place saying these words. For He was taking on our sins and our punishment.

In fact, when look at Psalm 22, we can see that the response to the first verse where the psalmist cries out the prophetic words, "Why have you forsaken me?" there is an answer in verse 24. Here's the answer to the question of Jesus, the question of the psalmist and the question of every person who has ever felt abandoned by the Father: For he (God the Father) has not despised or disdained the suffering of the afflicted one; he has not hidden his face from him but has listened to his cry for help.

Sin may deafen our ears to the answer, but the reality is that the Father has never and will never despise, disdain or turn His face away from us, forsaking us (if we are seeking His forgiveness). For He has heard our cry for help!

God the Father forsaking His own Son? Impossible! God the Father was "in Christ, reconciling the world to Himself" (2 Corinthians 5:19)! Jesus didn't feel it at the time. It seemed like the Father had forsaken Him, but He hadn't! Nor will He ever forsake you (if you have a broken heart before Him).

But what about the "God cannot look upon sin" part? Doesn't the Bible say that? Well, it does but we need to put that comment in context. It was Habakkuk the prophet who said that as he watched evil people seemingly getting away with their sins. Here's the whole quote in context:

"Your eyes are too pure to look on evil; you cannot tolerate wrong. Why then do you tolerate the treacherous? Why are you silent while the wicked swallow up those more righteous than themselves?" ~ (Habakkuk 1:13)

To paraphrase him, Habakkuk said, "Your eyes are too pure to look on evil and you can't tolerate wrong so why are you?" In other words, it made no sense to Habakkuk that God was looking on sin when Habakkuk believed that wasn't possible. He was smearing the face of God with the guilt and shame of humanity the same way Adam had done when he hid himself in the Garden of Eden because He thought God wouldn't want to look at him after he sinned. Adam was wrong. God came for His walk that day just as He had every day. And Habakkuk was wrong too.

Maybe next time try this. "Here is what I see" or "this is what I believe" or even "what do you think".

EG is correct that some here take that type of question first as a "you must listen to what I say" or "I know the truth and you dont" kind of statement.

Otherwise I think it is a very good post to study on.

Wow Maggie,
I don't know what to say to all of that! The things in my profile are personal to my experiences. I don't count myself as anything. In fact, I'm nothing more than dirt. Just a flesh body that wishes to be back home with his Savior. I hope that GOD will show you that my heart is for HIM.

Please excuse the length, the OP reminded me of this apologetics excerpt I love from D. James Kennedy:

Some time ago I had the opportunity to speak to a man who had no belief whatsoever in the Scriptures as any sot of divine revelation from God. He was a writer who was articulate and well-educated. While he was well-read, he was completely ignorant of any evidences for the truthfulness of the Christian faith and the Scriptures which reveal it. He said the Bible was simply a book written by men, just like any other book. I said, “That’s very interesting. I would like to read some statements to you about someone and have you tell me, assuredly, without question, about whom I am reading.”

He agreed and I began to read:

“Those who hate me without cause are more numerous than the hairs on my head” (Ps 69:4)

“The Kings of the Earth take their stand and the rulers conspire together against the Lord and His Anointed One” (Ps 2:2)

“Even my friend, in whom I trusted, one who ate my bread, has lifted up his heel against me” (Ps 41:9)

“Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered” (Zch 13:7)

“Then I said to them, ‘If it seems right to you, give me my wages; but if not, keep them.’ So they weighed my wages, 30 pieces of silver. ‘Throw it to the potter,’ the Lord said to me–this magnificent price I was valued by them. So I took the 30 pieces of silver and threw it into the house of the Lord, to the potter” (Zch 11:13-13)

“They are striking the judge of Israel on the cheek with a rod” (Mc 5:1)

“I gave My back to those who beat Me, and My cheeks to those who tore out My beard. I did not hide My face from scorn and spitting” (Is 50:6)

“They pierced My hands and My feet” (Ps 22:16)

“My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?” (Ps 22:1)

“Everyone who sees me mocks me; they sneer and shake their heads” ‘He relies on the Lord; let Him rescue him; let the Lord deliver him, since He takes pleasure in Him'” (Ps 22:7-8)

“They gave me gall for my food, and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink” (Ps 69:21)

“I am poured out like water, and all my bones are disjointed; my heart is like wax, melting within me” (Ps 22:14)

“Yet He Himself bore our sickness, and He carried our pains; but we regarded Him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted” (Is 53:4)

“He was oppressed and afflicted, yet He did not open His mouth. Like a lamb led to the slaughter and like a sheep silent before her shearers, He did not open His mouth” (Is 53:7)

“They divided my garments among themselves, and they cast lots for my clothing” (Ps 22:18)

“He submitted Himself to death” (Is 53:12)

“He bore the sin of many and interceded for the rebels” (Is 5:12)

“You may not break any of its bones” (Ex 12:46)

“He protects all his bones; not one of them is broken” (Ps 34:20)

“They will look at Me whom they pierced” (Zch 12:10)

“They made His grave with he wicked, and with a rich man at His death, although He had done no violence and had not spoken deceitfully” (Is 53:9)

“For You will not abandon me to Sheol; You will not allow Your Faithful One to see the Pit” (Ps 16:10)

“You ascended to the heights, taking away captives; You received gifts from people, even from the rebellious, so that the Lord God might live there” (Ps 68:18)

“The Lord declared to my Lord: ‘Sit at My right hand until I make Your enemies Your footstool” (Ps 110:1)

I said to him, “About whom did I read?” He replied, “Well, you obviously read of the life and ministry and suffering and death and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth.”

I said, “Is there any question in your mind about that?” He answered, “No. That could refer to no on else.”

I replied, “Well then, I would want you to understand that all of the Scriptures that I just read to you are taken from the Old Testament, which was competed some four hundred years before Jesus was born. No critic, no atheist, no agnostic has ever once claimed that any of those writings was written after His birth. In fact, they were translated from Hebrew into Greek in Alexandria some 150 years before He was born. If this is merely a book written by men, would you please explain to me how these words were written?”

He said, “I haven’t the faintest idea.” He was completely nonplussed. He had never heard those things before in his life. Indeed they cannot be explained by any purely humanistic presuppositions.

It is noteworthy that in no other religious writings in the world do we find any specific predictive prophecies like we find in Scripture. You will find no predictive prophecies whatsoever in the writings of Buddha, Confucius, Mohammed, Lao-Tse, or Hinduism. Yet in the Scripture there are well over two thousand prophecies, most of which have already been fulfilled.

They are so specific in nature that they burn all bridges behind them. If they are not fulfilled, it leaves no room for excuse. How can these be explained? Of all the attacks that have ever been made upon Scripture, there has never been one book written by a skeptic to disprove the prophecies of the Scripture. Though the Bible has been attacked at every other place, the one place where God rests His inspiration is that the things He foretells come infallibly to pass.

The Bible prophecies are altogether unexpected! I know of no one ever prophesying that any other human being would rise from the dead and ascend into heaven. That is exceedingly improbable. The chance of it happening by coincidence is incalculable. No, the Bible is not merely a book written by men; it is a book written by God through men, and the heart of its prophetic message is Jesus Christ.
