Hi Everyone!

What do you have have a huge collection of, and how do you justify having that collection? (Or maybe you're having a hard time admitting to yourself that it's actually time to prune, give away, or sell that ginormous mountain of "stuff".)

Feel free to tell us about anything that might fit under your own personal category of a "huge collection"--whether it's one (or ten) too many kitchen spices or appliances, comic books, music, knick knacks, clothes, technological gadgets... whatever it may be. The entire purpose of this thread is to tell us a little bit about yourself through the things you collect/are associated with and to have some fun doing it. :)

The inspiration for this thread comes from my own (seemingly) enormous collection of sewing books and patterns that I have collected since childhood. I did a quick count today, and it was somewhere around 50 books. It drives me crazy that too often, I'm looking for one piece of information and I find the answer in a series of fragmented steps scattered among 10 different volumes. This year I added 3 books to my stash and each one has about 4 pages of information I can't find anywhere else, and so, the collection continues to grow. I prefer "real" books to online sources (unless I can find a good instructional video) because I want to be able to flip back and forth between pages instead of having to constantly scroll a screen.

I don't like clutter or vast amounts of things, but unfortunately, haven't found any other way around it, so I just try to keep everything as organized as possible. I've also been collecting sewing patterns since I was in high school and while I occasionally make edits, have amassed a huge collection over the years.

Now, someone is bound to ask, "But Seoul, why do you need 10 patterns for one pair of shorts?" and here's why: I'm working on one particular pattern that works beautifully for my Mom (I made her 4 pairs with no problems) but for myself, requires a plethora of adjustments. The original pattern has no back pockets, and I had a very particular style in mind--I wanted to add pleated cargo pockets in a particular shape with a zipper closure. Unlike some very talented people here (I'm talking to you, PopClick! :)), I need to find specific examples of each step and you can never find them all in one pattern--for instance, one pattern has the shape of pocket I'm looking for; another tells you how to make the pleat; the third gives instructions on how to make it a cargo pocket; and finally, the fourth models how to sew in the zipper. Whew!!!!

The same was true when I tried making some pants for a girl I worked with who found out she was expecting and couldn't afford new clothes--I took a pattern for a pair of sweat pants and combined it with features from several other patterns to make khaki pants that looked professional for work but had an elastic waist that would be comfortable and "grow" with her and the baby. I was very happy when she told me that wearing them was like wearing a pair of pajamas all day! :)

I am constantly fighting with myself over how to cut down on the number of things I own, but in some ways find it necessary to keep acquiring more!!! Not to mention that the maintenance can take up more time than the actual hobby! To keep things organized, several years ago I came up with two lists for all my patterns--one lists them by brand and number, the second lists them by classification ("shorts", "church dresses", "knit t-shirt tops", etc.) and description ("high v-neck", "curved darts", "back zipper", etc.) It was a MONSTER of a project that took nearly a year but it was well worth the time.

How about the rest of you? I would love to hear what you enjoy collecting/acquiring/or even what people associate with you. (I say this because I read about a woman who has a huge set of rabbit-themed collectibles, and she doesn't even particularly like rabbits... It's just that someone once got her a rabbit figurine and everyone else assumed she liked rabbits, so now she has a massive collection.)

What do YOU seem to keep acquiring more and more of, and why?

I have a rather large music collection. All Christian, but all different styles. Music from old Southern Gospel to Christian rap and everything in between. More than 8,000 tracks in all. I have a mountain of CDs and stacks of records and tapes, but my real music collection is in my computer. (And it took a lot of work to get all those tapes and records into the computer...) I also have it backed up to two external hard drives, one of them off site.

My grandmother has repeatedly said, "what do you do with all that music?" Um... I listen to it?

I'm disappointed here I thought you were gonna tell us about your hoard of 85% Dark Chocolate....you know you want to tell us....lol

Again thanks for the birthday song speaking of music....that was nice of you.

My collection is fabric and I can justify it because I'm gonna start sewing and making things to try and sell to make money. Thing is I haven't run out of money yet to make me productive so just a few dollars more need to disappear and then the sewing machine will be running full tilt boogey....lol Nothing like going hungry to get one motivated....Not to worry I have a long time before the money runs out and I also now have a husband that I am sending to work...All part of my retirement plan.

No, I try not to advertise my dark chocolate stash. That I cannot backup to external hard drives.

I'm something of a minimalist. The only things I collect are intangible. :)

OK....you guys will think that I am the biggest nerd...

I have a huge collection of comic books. I used to collect as a kid. When comic book stores kind of became a thing in the 80's, I would even spend a lot of my paper route money on back issues. Most of my comic books are from the 70's and 80's, but I have several that are from the 60's as well, including the first appearances of Iron Man, the X-Men, the "new" X-Men groups from the 70's, other 70's "origens" and first appearances: Ms. Marvel, the Beast from the X-Men getting all blue and furry and eventually joining the Avengers, and first appearances of many of the minor heroes and some pretty popular villians, such as Nova, Ka-Zar, the Cat/Tigra, Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain Marvel (the Marvel comics version), Magneto, Juggernaut, the Inhumans. I also have a lot of DC comics.

I justify them because many are collector's items. They do take up a bunch of space. With that and a lot of teaching materials such as hand drums, Orff instruments, maracas, tambourines, bells, claves, etc. I don't have a lot of storage space and I am constantly fighting clutter. I also have a ton of piano books, many I use to teach out of.

I'm a mess, I tell you....a mess.

When I was 18 years old, I started a 5c collection. My aim was to collect $50 worth of 5c, go to some store, buy something worth $50 and watch them count $50 worth of 5c coins for entertainment sake. I managed to collect about $35 worth of said coins before I kind of forgot about it. Actually, I was talking to someone last week about my 5c collection, I'm pretty sure its in this house somewhere. Something tells me I should continue this until I see it accomplished. THEN I UPGRADE.

Blue--What happened to your teddy bear collection? I never had that many stuffed animals but I always thought it would be fun to give them away to a children's hospital or something... And I had to laugh over the John Stamos pictures... I had a friend who was like that with Kirk Cameron back in his "Growing Pains" days. She even had a huge poster of him on her ceiling. I played it safe. I didn't ask, and didn't judge. (Well ok... I DID laugh...)

Lynx--How do you suggest going about trying to find a "lost" song? When I was a kid I had one of those "True Value Hardware Store" Christmas records with random, often unheard of Christmas songs. I can only remember a few words, but it was something like, "Then sledding we'll go, go, go... Winter is here bringing laughter and fun..." I have been searching for it for years on lyrics sites but so far, no dice.

JesusLives--I would love to see your fabric stash!! Surprisingly, I have all these patterns and books... but try to only buy enough fabric for 2-3 projects at a time so I don't get overwhelmed. What do you like to sew? I know quilts are the hot thing nowadays but I've always been into garment sewing.

Siberian--At heart, I would LOVE to be a minimalist. Many days I have dreamed of being the type of person whose entire set of belongings could fit inside a backpack... but the things I'm interested in often require a lot of tools and space.

Arlene--Coins are cool!! If you would like a couple of American ones to add to your dream collection, let me know. I'd be happy to send you a few... though maybe I couldn't send all 50 of the different designs for quarters that they now have. I used to collect stamps, because I saw them as miniature pieces of art.

Hold the phone, everyone... Catherder has both an amazing set of comic books (which I've always found interesting... but maybe that's just because my brother would yell at me if he caught me reading his) AND an impressive collection of MASCARA?

I don't know. I'm not sure I can be friends with a guy whose makeup collection is more impressive than mine. (Plus, I can't wear mascara anymore... so I'd be really jealous that Catherder apparently can.)

Oh please.

We're just being polite for the sake of the forum.

We don't publicly talk about the pink dresses and tutus, as well as matching hosiery, shoes, bags, and feathery boa that goes along with all that mascara.

Er... I mean... D'OH!!

It was fuscia, not pink. And the accessories didn't match as much as complement!

sheesh! get it right.

Oh yeah, my bad. :)

The leopard-print gloves and snakeskin stilettos TOTALLY COMPLEMENTED all that FUSCHIA.

Well... If I remember correctly... you do have blond hair?

And so, pink would, like, totally be your color. :D

(I'm thinking of that Pink video--the singer, not the color--in which she parodied Paris Hilton... But it would be Catherder instead... carrying a pink handbag with a tiny dog's head peeking out from the top...)

train collection and 300+ hotwheels
Very cool, Garfield!

Do you set up displays and tracks for your trains? And how do you display your Hot Wheels?

I love miniatures!! I think what got me hooked was a dollhouse display at the local library when I was a kid. One of its features was a tiny gumball machine that used those nonpareil candy decorations as the gumballs.

Dolls freak me out--the eyes!!!--but I love things like dollhouses, model train "towns", and Lego creations.

In my case the question has come a little too late. Over the summer I realized I had way too much stuff just sitting around collecting dust. So, I spent a few months going through boxes, closets, and under my bed:eek:- in the laborious task of reorganizing, repacking, and hauling away junk. Though I will admit I retained my small and nearly complete collection of Time Life Old West Books, and my four guitars:eek:. Oh, and a sizeable stash of leather. I used to have a leatherwork business.

Eschatology books (No not Darby type stuff, actual academic stuff.).
Books on Lutheran theology. Trying to understand their angle on things.
Highlighters. You can never have enough, or enough colors.

I justify it because of the pursuit of knowledge.
