I've heard many Christians say that musical instruments and certain musical things can not be used in Church. I'm curious, why does that belief even exist? I'm not even being mean in asking why some of you believe this way. I'm just asking to get a better idea of why. Please, do not fight.

Bible scripture to use defending this?

Here is an old thread that may interest you on this topic.

Churches of Christ with or without instruments, which is the right way to worship?

Its basically Doctrine MyOnly...I recall attending very traditional churches as a kid where guitars or anything that insinuated
and/or suggested Rock n Roll was not allowed...and not because there's anything biblical its just because they were self-righteous little pharisees about everything! :p...Or maybe I mean Psalm 150 talks about all the things we should praise God with perhaps they were using that to say well It doesn't say Guitar or Drums or a Bass...granted those weren't even invented back then lol

Psalm 150

1 Praise the Lord
Praise God in his sanctuary;
praise him in his mighty heavens.
2 Praise him for his acts of power;
praise him for his surpassing greatness.
3 Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet,
praise him with the harp and lyre,
4 praise him with timbrel and dancing,
praise him with the strings and pipe,
5 praise him with the clash of cymbals,
praise him with resounding cymbals.
6 Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.
Praise the Lord.

To add to what I said, I've also heard individuals claim that their choice for a church is one whose worship service is "hot", which consists of Loud and Upbeat because apparently that is where they'll find God...I feel bad at the thought that people aren't comfortable in their faith to see God in the loudest to the quietest of situations (Elijah hearing God's voice in a gentle breeze anyone?)

It's really sad that our community's reputation causes people to have to ask us to not squabble when responding to a thread.

JesusMyOnly (I wish I had an actual name to call you by :p), there are quite a few reasons for prohibition of instruments in praise and worship, not all of them biblical. They vary by background/denomination, also. It's all very convoluted. Here's an in-depth look at some "reasons" as to why they're restricted: Instrumental Music in Worship: Sing or Play Instruments?

Happy reading!

I've been exploring in the Church of Christ. That is where all my questions from curiosity are coming from.

All the NT commands Christians to do is sing. Since I allow the bible to be my sole and final authority on this issue then all I do is sing. If I do not have to do what the bible says when it comes to singing, then why would I have to do anything thing the bible says on any issue? Not allowing the bible to be the final and sole authority on issues is how there ends up being thousands of religious groups that contradict each other in what they believe yet claim to go by the bible.

so SeaBass, the verses you're calling a strict command (Ephesians 5:19, Colossians 3:16) only authorize speaking to one another in psalms, hymns and spiritual songs.

... why are you speaking in prose, not quoting psalms?

Well, I think what is important in considering what constitutes the truth on this or any other matter is what does the Bible say; not how do we feel about it, not what does out hearts tell us about it, not which do we prefer, not what does the Church of Christ or any other group say about it but, what does the Bible say. This must be our only metric for determining truth.

They are just stuck in their traditions, want things to remain the same, afraid of changes or maturing; and some of them wears dentures and so they can't eat solid foods.

Col 3:16 "... singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord."
Eph 5:19 "...singing..."

Psalms just means a pious song. It may or many not be one found in the OT.

"teaching and admonishing one another in psalms .. "
"speaking to yourselves in psalms .. "

allow me then, as you suggest i should, to literally and strictly follow what the scripture says:

It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord,
and to sing praises unto thy name, O Most High:
To shew forth thy lovingkindness in the morning,
and thy faithfulness every night,
Upon an instrument of ten strings, and upon the psaltery;
upon the harp with a solemn sound.
For thou, Lord, hast made me glad through thy work:
I will triumph in the works of thy hands.
O Lord, how great are thy works!
and thy thoughts are very deep.
A brutish man knoweth not;
neither doth a fool understand this.

(Psalm 92:1-6)
