I have a young friend who recently Facebooked this.... It might be helpful.
There is nothing more painful than having to conceal your deepest held convictions and beliefs for fear that you will be rejected, and there is nothing more heartbreaking than to have your expectations met when you make said convictions and beliefs publicly known. However, there is nothing more freeing than being able to say, "Hey, this is where I stand on the issue of ___________!", without having to lie and conceal, thereby keeping your integrity intact. Being honest about where you are on your journey is *a* cure to the heartsickness and depression that sometimes accompanies the process of unlearning and discovering truth.
Do not succumb to the pressure to lie and be dishonest in the name of maintaining a reputation. Sure, you don't have to share *EVERY* single internal thought or musing of your heart, but you should never have to staple your tongue to the roof of your mouth or padlock your lips shut, simply so that religious people, who will inevitably reject you anyways, delay their rejection by a few months. These are not the types of people we should be seeking to appease in the first place. Humanity is attracted to authenticity and honesty, and even many fundamentalists, who will ultimately disagree with you, will internally respect you for your integrity.
Be honest with yourself and be honest with the world. Dishonesty rots the bones and makes you a slave to the opinions of people whose approval you don't *really* want in the first place, but honesty and authenticity opens the lines of communication with the people you *actually* want and need in your life.
