Now for some useless trivia. :)

Faced with the next-to-impossible problem of spelling Mississippi, millions of people around the English-speaking world fall back on that venerable children's rhyme:
M-I-crooked letter-crooked letter-I
Crooked letter-crooked letter-I
humpback-humpback-I.
Others recite:
Mrs M, Mrs I, Mrs Double S I,
Mrs Double S I, Mrs Double P I.
Even then, thousands of folk don't know how to spell the word correctly. On the Internet, Google lists an amazing 208,000 pages misspelt as Mississipi (with one p).
The single-p advocates go back nearly three centuries, as an 1718 French map in the Library of Virginia is entitled Carte de la Louisiane et du Cours du Mississipi. Maybe that was the correct spelling in those days.
To spell the State's name correctly, remember these lines:
Four simple words will get you by:
What you'll never MISS IS SIP PI.

Easy to Say, Hard to Spell – Difficult Spelling

I know he said there is nothing to worry about, but I don't like taking anything. It was just a stretch to see him.

M-I-crooked letter-crooked letter-I
Crooked letter-crooked letter-I
humpback-humpback-I.

you know my two youngest have an ongoing joke about 'useless trivia with mom'?
that hurts, Sarah, it really hurts. :p

you made up for it, though, by giving me another language geek site.
cheers!
Are you really good at trivial pursuit? :D

As I was told as a kid, "no pain, no gain". I despised that saying and still do.

I'm not American and I never had any trouble spelling the word 'Mississippi' (but being an Aussie, nor did I have any real use for the word - haha!). I learnt this one from TV or a movie or something when I was really little: "M, I, double-S, I, double-S, I, double-P, I." Easy.

Same here, but there is one phrase I dislike even more....."boys will be boys"...I heard it so many times as an excuse for bullying.

all of these would have made it more difficult for me....I prefer just straight memorization...
I never could do the planet saying....and I preferred soh cah toa to the alternative of Some old horse caught another horse taking oats away....
