I will be reading, studying the Book of Job because it teaches me how to go through trials, lost, and testing. So, I am giving everyone the heads up about the Book of Job and starting with Chapter 1:6-12

Job 1 New Living Translation (NLT)

Job’s First Test

6 One day the members of the heavenly court[a] came to present themselves before the Lord, and the Accuser, Satan,[b] came with them. 7 “Where have you come from?” the Lord asked Satan.
Satan answered the Lord, “I have been patrolling the earth, watching everything that’s going on.”
8 Then the Lord asked Satan, “Have you noticed my servant Job? He is the finest man in all the earth. He is blameless—a man of complete integrity. He fears God and stays away from evil.”
9 Satan replied to the Lord, “Yes, but Job has good reason to fear God. 10 You have always put a wall of protection around him and his home and his property. You have made him prosper in everything he does. Look how rich he is! 11 But reach out and take away everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face!”
12 “All right, you may test him,” the Lord said to Satan. “Do whatever you want with everything he possesses, but don’t harm him physically.” So Satan left the Lord’s presence.

Why was Satan with the members of heavenly courts in the presence of GOD?
What was the purpose or mission of Satan patrolling the earth and observing what was going on?
Why did GOD mention Job name to Satan?
What is the Hebrew name of Job and meaning of Job's name?
Did Job every sin against God?
Was it fair for God to permit the testing from Satan towards Job?

Job is my best buddy! Both the man and the book!

For one thing, it shows the sovereignty of God in the opening and final chapters. It really does show us that God allows bad things to happen to us. And we may never know the reasons why.

Plus it also highlites Job's friends, the false comforters. Blaming Job, and adding to his pain. With friends like that, Satan doesn't have to do any work!

It also shows me how WRONG the Word Faith movement is, with their lies that no one ever suffers. In fact, Job shows us that as long as sin is in the world, we will have trials and tribulations. But one day, Jesus will return, and then there will be no more tears or crying.

Yes, and it shows us that there are dealings going on behind the scenes (Job 1) that we are not aware of but nevertheless to trust God over the long haul.
I don't believe Job ever sinned through it all.
God is God, He can use any means He wants to test us.
He used Israel's enemies to punish Israel.

It's amazing how God allowed Job to go through the trials he did but has honored him for it for several millennia!...so far.

The first two questions...he is the accuser and the tempter, as for what he was doing there....who do we think he accuses to???
The thrid, faith is tested, we put God to the test, so in turn he tested us....hence the need for the prayer "and lead us not into temptation"...
Psalm 26:2-*"Test me,*O LORD, and try me, examine my heart and my mind;"

Jobs name in Hebrew....means persecuted/hated

Did Job ever sin....yes, but only in his questioning and attitude, really in but nothing other than doubt....he was just wrong in his questioning:
"Who is this that darkens my counsel*with words without knowledge?"
And...
"He keeps company with evildoers; he associates with wicked men. For he says, 'It profits a man nothing when he tries to please God.'*
"So listen to me,*you men of understanding.*Far be it from God to do evil,*from the Almighty to do wrong."

You see, Job had gotten to the point where he said what does it profit a man not to sin, if he endures the same fate..Job 35:3*"Yet you ask him, 'What*profit*is it to me, and what do I gain by not sinning?"

.

Was it fair...just stick to the words of Elihu....'far be it from the Almighty to do wrong', who are we to tell the potter what to do with the clay, as if the pot says to the potter "what have your hands made"...

Actually this is highly questionable.

The Book of Job is one of my favorite as well. So very many life lessons to be learned from it.

One of the mysteries of Job is when exactly did he live? Historians do not seem to be able to agree on this, and because of this, it is not easy to read of his life story in context to other peoples of the Bible. One of the best Articles I have found concerning this is linked below:

[h=3]Apologetics Press - When Did Job Live?[/h]
EXCERPT FROM ARTICEL:

Neither the book of Job nor any other book of the Bible indicates forthrightly when God’s servant Job lived upon the Earth. Furthermore, no biblical genealogies with chronological information, such as that found in Genesis 5 and 11, help in approximating the century in which Job lived. Nevertheless, various clues within the book of Job seem to indicate Job lived sometime after the Flood, but long before the time of Moses.

Another of the mysteries of the Book of Job concerns who exactly was this "satan" referred to in Chapters 1 and 2. There doesn't seem to be agreement on this either. An Article I found is linked below:

There is much about the Book of Job that is a mystery in my opinion.

Some people claim that it is simply a work of literature, or simply Christian mythology.

Nevertheless, it remains as one of the greatest examples of how to deal with life's trials that I have ever read.

I like verse 8. He fears God and stays away from evil. Most Christians today don't really believe that. They think they will forever be a slave to their sin in this life. Jesus is coming to take His people home (who are faithful to Him). Make your paths straight before the Lord.

Well who is this Satan.
1- he is an accuser and watcher..."Does Job fear God for nothing"
2- he is an Angel there with all the other Angels before God
3- he is a destroyer and afflictor, with the power to call down fire from the sky
4- he roams throughout the Earth, just like the NT says Satan does.

"And it is I who have created the DESTROYER*to work havoc;*
no weapon forged against you will prevail,*and you will refute*every tongue that ACCUSES you.....The tongues of men and Angels.....

Sounds like THE Satan to me, just look at the conversations.
They are talking about utterly ruining a man's perfectly good life, and how he is going to get Job to give up his faith and curse God....sounds like THE SATAN to me.

The guidelines he is given, sounds like Satan, I don't know any other Satan in the bible.

I know it's hard for some people to accept that Satan still has access to God because he was supposedly 'kicked out', but they forget about Revelation and the war in heaven, where 'This book of PROPHECY' talks about Satan getting kicked out, and they forget how he is the 'spirtual force of evil in the heavenly realms', so they try to throw in something else that fits THEIR UNDERSTANDING instead of letting God breathed Scripture speak for itslef.....
Satan came from the Earth, to present himself before God with all the other Angels, and utterly destroyed a man's life in his attempt to over throw his faith....
Satan, Satan, Satan, the Satan, Period

Yeah I can see how it is questionable, I do however know God had a very unique way of naming poeple and towns with what they were associated with.....in Jobs case it was persecution and turning to God in the end and being doubly blessed, so to say which of those aspects he was named in association with would be hard to do, but according to those translations you provided his name could mean all of the aspects he went through....which is just Genius in itslef.

I hate to throw on a wet blanket here, but many miss what the book of Job is really about.
I agree with all comments that this is about trials and being tested, but you need to ask yourself why.

What many miss is that God had to deal with 2 sins Job was living in.
Self righteousness and pride.

The later chapters show this to us plainly.
Job 32.1
Job 35.2

God had to remove these things from Job and they were.

My greatest "life lesson" learned from the Book of Job is the answer to the age old question posed to God so many times, by so many people:

"Why?" "Why God did this happen to me? Why did You allow this to happen?" "Why?"

Job certainly sought the answer to this through all of his disputations of being unfairly set upon. While his faith never waivered, nor his love of God, he certainly managed to eventually get on God's last nerve, and God finally answered him. Now, some will not be pleased with the answer, and it took me awhile to understand and accept the answer, but in my opinion, as I read the Book of Job, Chapters 38 through 41, the answer is quite clear.

"WHO ARE YOU TO ASK ME WHY?"

I disagree,
It is plainly shown to us starting in Job 32, that Job was going through his tests and trials, because he was found righteous in his own eyes. This is why God lowered the boom on him starting in Job 38.

Job was terribly prideful and very self righteous. I know this view is unpopular, and I believe it stays unpopular, because many sons and daughters of God do not want to think that God would use Satan to reprove/chastise and correct us. We do not want to think God would allow such testing and trials. As Angela correctly stated, this is where the Word of Faith movement has gotten into he ditch.

That said, Paul stated as much in 1 Cor 5.5:
[SUP]5 [/SUP]I have decided to deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of his flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

God had to purge Job from pride and self righteousness and knew ahead of time that Job would allow him to purge him.

The real lesson from Job is pride goes before the fall and self righteousness will be pruned. Job denied his own pride and self righteousness until chapter 42.

42 Then Job answered the Lord and said,
[SUP]2 [/SUP]“I know that You can do all things,
And that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted.
[SUP]3 [/SUP]‘Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?’
Therefore I have declared that which I did not understand,
Things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.”
[SUP]4 [/SUP]‘Hear, now, and I will speak;
I will ask You, and You instruct me.’
[SUP]5 [/SUP]“I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear;
But now my eye sees You;
[SUP]6 [/SUP]Therefore I retract,
And I repent in dust and ashes.”

We also nee dot remember there were 4 men that came to Job.

The 4th man everyone forgets is Elihu, the other 3 were Eliphaz, Bildad and Zophar. ELihu rebukes Job for his pride and self righteousness starting in Chapter 32. God's anger is only kindled towards Eliphaz, Bildad and Zophar for false counsel but not Elihu.

Job did not repent because he asked God why. Job was shown his pride and self righteousness and that is why he repented and was then blessed beyond measure, because he came to udnerstand it was God blessing him not through his own good works.

If anything, Job was the exact opposite of Abraham.

Sorry, what part of my comment are you disagreeing with? Lost me there. If it is about his faith not wavering or his love waxing, then there are passages in the Book to show this. If it is about my statement of what God's answer was, then your comment doesn't reveal anything as to why you would disagree.
