Ok so I need some advise about dating. First off me and my girlfriend have been dating for 3 years. She is 21 and I am 22, and we are both in college. We recently got engaged over Christmas break and I felt so confident with my decision. Lately I have been having second thoughts. One reason is I have never dated anyone else, and I am no longer sure she is the one for me. In a way I feel like I am missing out, but at the same time I am scared that I might be wrong. I have been praying like crazy, but I don't feel like I am getting an answer from God. I don't know if I should ask her to put everything on hold, but I don't know how to tell her that I want to date other people, and I also feel like it's a little late to be doing so. I also do not want to loose her if I am wrong. I am just completely lost and I don't know what to do.

Firstly, a huge congratulation! :)

It sounds like you are having 'cold feet'? It's not uncommon to feel this way.

You obviously got an engage with her for a reason. Just don't let other "feelings" or "other people" cloud your decision/ judgement. God's obviously put her in your path, and 3 years sounds kinda adequate to figure out each other.

You mentioned, "One reason is I have never dated anyone else, and I am no longer sure she is the one for me. In a way I feel like I am missing out, but at the same time I am scared that I might be wrong." Just remember, the grass is still a grass no matter which side of the fence, and only gets greener where you water it (it takes work no matter where!).

I suggest you talk to a wise older married couple in the church or pastor(s). Remember there are 3 parties involved in marriage, you, your fiancée and God.

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. Psalm 119:105

If you're not sure that she's the one, then I would talk with her and ask to put things on hold for awhile. You don't want to get married with doubts in your mind do you?

Absolutely not! How do I word it, bc the last thing I want to do is hurt her, and what do we do when everything is on hold?

hmmm... well, definitely be honest with her. Is she a christian also? Tell her the doubts you're having and that you need God's answer before committing to a life-time marriage. You will both know if you're the one for each other. God will show you. :)

Hmm.... no baggage from previous relationships, no broken hearts from all the women you've given yourself to, no exes to trash talk you... yeah. You're missing out...

Yeah, it's good to be transparent and communication constructively with each other.

Also, point to consider:

- Grab yourself a good marriage test booklet, go through it with your fiancée and pastor. It's a good way to open the communication channels and address any conflicting issues, besides what you already mentioned. To see if you are both on the same page.

I like what MiaH said, "the grass is still a grass no matter which side of the fence, and only gets greener where you water it (it takes work no matter where!)". So true! Don't let the devil temp you that you're "missing out" on something. It reminds me of Adam and Eve. They had everything and things were perfect, but the devil tempted them with the one thing that they couldn't have.

So true! It really upsets me the devil comes to rob the joy and love that God brings.

Good point about Adam and Eve. :)

Me too! And thanks :) it's the same type of temptations that the devil tempted Jesus with (Luke 4:1-12). There's 3 basic categories for temptation: the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life (1 John 2:16).

I pray God guides you in your relationship, Garrett :)

Alright, I'm in cold hard facts mode today:

1) Marriage is a huge commitment. If it doesn't intimidate you a little bit, there's a problem. Those are some pretty daunting vows you're going to be making.

2) There can be a lot of both internal and external pressure to get engaged in your last year of college, especially if you've been dating for a while. It would be good to ask yourself the hard questions of whether you really want to marry this girl or if you are grabbing for some sort of stability in transition by getting engaged? Is your relationship still running on love and commitment or is it more inertia and it's just more peaceful to maintain the relationship than break it off? When you're considering the rest of your lives, these are important questions to ask.

3) The fear of missing out can and probably will cause you to miss out. Every choice is a limitation, even the choice to sit and wait for something better which may or may not exist. And if you're always waiting for a better option, you're never going to go anywhere.

4) Take it from the older singles around here (or go visit the singles forum), once you get out of college and all the young adult support structures, it's harder to find quality Christian singles to be potential dates and partners. If you've found a wonderful young lady that you know well and think you can build a life together, and being married and having a family is something you know you desire; don't throw it away because of personal insecurity or groundless fears. If you're a list maker feel free to make a list of reasons to marry her and potential challenges you can see that make you not want to marry her. There is no biblical support for the idea that God made just one person for you so you don't need to be afraid of choosing wrong. Use all the wisdom you have to choose a good marriage partner, but after you marry, you figure out how to make the marriage work. It doesn't just magically all work out in simplicity and ease, and challenges don't mean that you married the wrong person.

5) The end of college can be a pretty stressful time. If it is feasible it might be a good idea to put off any future relationship planning until after the end of the school year. If there's no reason that this has to be settled by the end of the school year, just let go until you've finished the school year and have fewer other things clamoring for your attention.

well you've committed so she will be upset with the news. make sure you have thought about your decision long enough. and pray. i say postpone, hopefully things go well. if she's the right one your not missing anything not dating other girls there's a lot of wrong ones out there. ill pray too.

The first thing I would suggest you to consider is do you really feel like you want tk date other people or are you just getting nervous. Do you have someone in particular that you have thought about dating and didn't get the chance? I think that what your going through is completely normal, your about to commit to this person for the rest of your life, it can be nerve racking and your anxieties are bound to get to you. Chances are she's having some of the same iinsecurities as you. I would suggest you talk to her because you definitely don't want to start a marriage out with doubts, but at the same time you don't want to let last minute worries ruin what could be the happiest day of your life. Trust me, she's going to want to know how you feel, and honestly she's the only one who can calm/confirm your doubts.
Hope this helps!

First of all, congratulations to you on your engagement. Finding someone you love and want to marry, and then becoming engaged, is a huge deal. It's nothing to take lightly. There is a lot of good advice on this thread already. I'll echo and add.

First, I'd say don't make any rash decision. It's seems like you are putting a lot of thought into it, which is really good. I'd say this, when you're with the right woman, you have no desire to date other women. Now, your wanting to date other women...is this because you truly are interested in someone else? Or do you see your friends going from girl to girl and you envy them? You talk about if you're wrong...well, you can't know that until you do something. But, please know that if you're wrong, that doesn't mean that she will be waiting on you.

Ask yourself these questions about your fiancé. Do you love her? Does she love you? Does she treat you well? Has she ever given you a reason to doubt her? Is she there for you? I hope all those are yes and you can say you do the same for her. If all of the above is yes, I can't see a reason to break it off. If anything, as mentioned, take your time and don't rush the wedding. Be honest with her.

If you are not in love with her and do want to date others, you should...but only if that's 100% what you want-for the right reasons.

I'll finish up with saying that I'm currently going through a divorce. I got married to who I thought was a great girl overall. But, there were red flags that I ignored. This goes back to the questions I told you to ask yourself. Most importantly is her love for you and how well she treats you and if she is there for you. How well you are treated will tell you a lot. My soon to be ex was good to me when we dated and engaged, but there were a lot of times she wasn't good to me or there for me like she should have been. My happiness wasn't always a priority for her. She was also very controlling. So...that was my red flag I ignored. Granted God had and has a plan for me, and He does for you also.

I wish you the best of luck with your fiancé whichever course you take.

In my opinion if you both are Christian and grow healthy in spiritual aka mature and you love her so why not?? if you are worried about never dated anyone else and questioning yourself is she the right one??? i rather put it like this: there are many good flower infront.. each time you'll find good one than before but you cant go back to the previous flower.. if you are looking/wondering/curious the best of the best then you'll never satisfied.. in my dictionary to know if someone is the right one is: 1. he/she must be Christian (not only Christian as religion but must be grow and mature aka love God more than anything) 2. he/she has a good vision for life 3. Chemistry/love both of you... no body perfect but i think you should think carefully before taking the next step.. commitment in marriage is for a life time.. dont rush until you sure enough.. :) Good luck and Cogratulation ^_^

that will make her sad and broke her heart. three years is long time to understand each other. Pray to LORD to guide you so you wont make any wrong decision for her and yourself.
