Aye, but fads come and go.

If America was the only country that existed libertarianism might work. Alas though, it's not a workable model for our time and place.
Why is that? You think this is a fad, considering that our country was founded on a form of libertarian thought?

To me the problem that the Republican party faces is the possibility that Rand Paul will leave the party and join the Libertarian Party after the convention.

We are still early in the running for the next presidency and nothing is set in stone yet.
Just like everybody keeps talking about Hilary Clinton, and even though yes she may seem like the front runner, she will not be the only one running for presidency from the democratic party either. So we do not know who will be the main two chosen quite yet, but if it does come down to Clinton vs. Bush then it will be a no win situation.....

^This. Though libertarianism itself only emerged after the Romantic-Transcendentalist movement, it's actually a pretty old political vein in the United States with roots in the thought of Madison and Jefferson.

There are few political movements I would dismiss as a "fad." To many more conservative ladies and gentlemen of the late 1800's, progressivism no doubt looked like a fad. It probably had faddish qualities, but the movement's adherents realized the benefits of long-range vision.

I have great doubts that the founders would have, if confronted with the reality 200 years later of abortion on demand, homosexual marriage, legalized marijuana for the purpose of smoking it rather than making rope out of it, etc., they would have been as "libertarian" as the Libertarians of today would have us believe.

No argument here, though in my experience libertarianism is attracting a wider age range than you might give them credit for. Especially among the activist base.

This is true. Being an uniformed moron who takes their ideas of government and Economics from fantasy instead of actual policy developed by professionals, is not confined to an age range.

It's hard to say what the Founding Fathers would have wanted as a group, because they held positions contrary to one another in their own time. Some, albeit an influential minority, would probably agree with libertarians on many issues today if given a briefing on the history of policy from then until now.

It's also hard to generalize libertarian policy positions which vary greatly according to whichever libertarian or libertarian chapter you may be speaking with at the time.

A common denominator among most libertarians though is one you hinted at: they hold to a political orientation that they believe is closest to the ideals of the founding era, but do not often realize they also accept constructs of a very different movement of political thought.

To bring it all back full circle to the nomination process, I'll speak from the heart rather than the brain.

I hope the nomination process brings the GOP a conservative rather than a libertarian (or establishment type). Preferably a conservative that can effectively incorporate libertarian expertise in economic affairs when the time for policy-making comes about.

That said, I'll take just about anyone who leans Right over Jeb Bush.

Lol, I don't know about that. The so-called founders were into some pretty wierd stuff. Me thinks they'd give many of the liberals today a run for their money.

If he runs, he has my vote in the Primaries................after that.........it will depend on who the actual nominees end up being.

This comment reminds me I have not yet decided who to vote for in the Primaries. I will be voting in the GOP primaries though I know that much. I suppose we'll have to see who shows up first and then whom is left by the time it rolls around to the O-H.

There is no reason to throw down for one candidate right now anyway. The primaries are a long way off. You have plenty of time to make an informed decision.

I have a few pet favorites right now and some people who I will never vote for. A lot can happen between now and the state's caucus.

Well I figure I'd resurrect this thread to post GOP political news here, just trying to stay mindful of our overseas comrades and not trying to flood the News section with our politics too much lol. Plus I figure this thread is still open and good until the titled GOP Nominee is elected.

As far as GOP news I have heard media rumors Kasich is likely to run. This caught my interest quite a bit. Kasich would be by far the best qualified of the GOP to be nominee. So I was a bit excited about that which got me thinking on the GOP Primary as a whole as well as this topic.

Also a few days back I had seen a very interesting interview between Katie Couric and Carly Fiorina. Given the two personalities, I found it somewhat entertaining. Sort of like a warm up to the coming debates. Fiorina is of course not likely to win to say the least of it, but I liked the interview. I found it to be very interesting and covering many current topics of the day. I think she has some interesting points and will be good for the overall show of the primary when the election really starts to get underway.

Here is the full interview, but unfortunately the uploader put a bunch of banal annotations. These can be turned off by clicking the setting button and turning them off.
