That's because Au comes from the Latin "Aurum." Strangely enough, the English language is rarely used in science. You are much more likely to find Latin, and Greek. But never English! Too new a language I guess!

Yeah, I have a friend who studied latin and Greek in highschool she said it made science classes like chemistry so easy. Especially when trying to figure out word meanings
