He knocked over my daughters hamster cage and killed Humphrey last night. This.....2 weeks after he killed 4 of our chickens. It's weird that I'm so upset over it.

aww poor Humphrey.. *sob*.. :( It's not the dog's fault. That's what animals do, they knock stuff over, break things, even kill things sometimes. But if he keeps killing your other animals, I'd consider putting him down before he turns on one of your kids. What breed of dog is he?

Dachsund and schitzu....he's fine with the kids. He just likes to kill little critters. My daughter is devastated. I think that's why I'm so angry.

ohh okay.. well, do you have a coop for the chickens with a cage around it to keep the dog out? If not, can you buy or make one? As for the gerbil or hamster, if you get another one, put the cage up high enough so the dog can't see it, like on top of the bureau or something. High enough up where he can't reach it even if he stands on tippy toes..lol..

Ya...we have a pretty nice chicken coup that we built that is predator proof. My daughter rearranges her room all the time and this time the cage was where "Rufus" could get to it. Usually our other dog "trooper" protects Humphrey but he was obviously slacking on his duties last night.

If he repents, the Lord will forgive him.

Sorry to hear all that. My dog was named Mennis (Menace)
....and man, was he.

You need a shock collar, Sirk. I've never had a dog, but a number of folks who do have told me that's how they trained theirs not to kill chickens. One guy had to use two to make sure that the battery going dead wouldn't interfere; there was always one good one in there. Seriously, zap bad pup as soon as he goes to the birds' pen (you decide how strong to make it at first; you can amp it up as needed). Make him scared of the invisible force field of terror the chickens apparently now emit :).

oh so sorry...doxies are part of the hound group and were bred to ...well go after little animals...poor guy is just doing his thing

I have 4 low content Siberian husky/wolfdogs and 1 purebred Siberian...we lost most of our chickens to them and we cannot have a cat...my husband really likes cats (me not so much) or any other small mammal...I just brought one of them in because we have a pair of wild mallards that are getting comfortable here and she will try to get out to get them until she does...get out and get them

Still, I am sorry about your daughter having to loose her little pet that way...I've been angry at my gang as well...one killed my fav chicken...she was a pet actually, Ruby,...only she did not kill it outright...it died as I held it...crying and hoping she would live...took me awhile to forgive that dog...but it's their nature...they can't help it

The dachshund (UK /ˈdæksənd/ or US /ˈdɑːkshʊnt/ dahks-huunt or US /ˈdɑːksənt/;[SUP][2][/SUP]) is a short-legged, long-bodied dog breed belonging to the hound family. The standard size dachshund was bred to scent, chase, and flush out badgers and other burrow-dwelling animals, while the miniature dachshund was developed to hunt smaller prey such as rabbits. In the American West they have also been used to hunt prairie dogs (wiki)

Well, in our house...if one family member kills another family member, that member goes bye bye.

I have no tolerance for that crap.

I don't get men sometimes. Why is it it's weird you're so upset over it? You love the dog (usually), but he killed someone your daughter (and probably you) loved too.

I don't know your relationship with your chickens. (Are they food producers or pets?) But Humphrey was a pet. Pets are closer to "someone" than "something." Food is a something. Daughter is very much someone you love, so why do you think it's weird to be upset?

Well the chickens have names so they're in a sense pets that produce food. Lol. Kinda like Betsy the old milk cow. What I thought was weird is that I became pretty angry. Angry enough to grab the dog by the scruff and shove his nose towards humphreys lifeless body laying on his back in the living room floor and say "LOOK WHAT YOU HAVE DONE"!!!!

I can understand that feeling. Back when I was a kid a cat killed my bunny and I was so angry with that cat...I can still picture him...a black and white, ugly beast pickin up a fight wherever he could find one...

Growing up we had a beagle and rabbits. The beagle was trained as a rabbit dog, so the secret to keeping the rabbits safe was to keep the beagle away from the rabbits. No pain required, since he was trained to hunt rabbits to begin with.

(Ended up a bad rabbit hunter, but we laughed. Exactly how trained can you keep a trained dog when you give him that much mixed signals? lol)

If anyone is inclined to use a shock collar on their dog, first they should use it on themselves. Once you use it on yourself there is absolutely no way you'd use it on your dog.Even at it's lowest level, the pain factor isn't any different than pulling out a 60 volt light bulb -- still lit -- out of the alligator's tank. (Experience talking. Don't do that. The alligator is smart enough to know to stay out of the water, so I was dumber than the alligator. lol)

Dogs do know shame. That works. Granted, they are like humans, so they know shame but may do the same thing again because the shame is worth it.

I think the decision on what to do with Rufus ought to be your daughter's decision, and only made in a few days or a week's time, so she can see past the emotions. Just my opinion, but thought I'd give it to you to help you figure out how to deal with the vicious, albeit sometimes-tolerant dog. (That is Rufus in your avatar, right? Hard to stay mad at a dog willing to put up with that costume, even if he is a pet slayer.)

Actually, I almost typed "you can even use it on yourself first", but I didn't want the post to be too long. I've seen people use the shock collars on themselves. Maybe the kind you had was a much stronger one, or your body is less tolerant of electrical pain than most. Either way, I still think it's better to train the dog than to possibly get rid of him, risk more hamsters, or keep the property chicken-free :).

Well...Rufus the dog is my wife's happy thought. He was there for her thru a lot of stuff so there is no way the dog is leaving. That being said...when I got home this afternoon, Rufus had forgotten all about the butt chewing scruff grabbing I did and I'm guessing he forgot he killed Humphrey too.....he's a psychopath. My little girl is already plotting and scheming for Humphreys replacement so I think we will all live.

As an aside...I asked her if Rufus killed me if her mom would go out looking for a new husband the next day...to which she replied with a sly little smile.......yeeeeesssss.
