But you can't deny that some people's interpretation of scripture doesn't deserve a facepalm from us,
............more like a bashing of our face into the side of a palm tree.
I love the word, facepalm. It makes me smile. :)

I don't know, Willie. You kind of have that Obi-Wan Kenobi smoothness going on sometimes.
He wasn't born a Jedi.

Took centuries to lock down The Force.

The fact is, lies that tickle ears, half truths and a watered-down gospel, will fill some mega churches. The whole truth is not popular. The world loves its own.

Matthew 7:14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
I used to go to a mega Southern Baptist Church and there was a lady in her 70's that was attracted to anything that anyone would put in print. This is a person that was raised in the SB faith. She should know better. My husband said he thinks they are bored with their faith.

I know. I actually started my post by saying that....but it ruined my punchline.

At the end of the day, it really does come down to interpretation. Most should agree.
BTW, I've agreed with you on this before.....many times.
I have to admit that I was shocked, when I first started getting into Anthropological Theology, that all of the teachings, in and around, Jesus' day were not actual translations, but "interpretations" by various Rabbis... who were not even "ordained" Holy men.

I agree guys the gospel appears simple.

But let me put one simple point. Simple by the way. The way you understand everything, literally everything goes through the filter of your brain, the readers and no one elses. It takes out what it does not like and adds in a background that is comfortable.

At each point the next step appears easy, but which is it? Look at this website, these simple ideas when planted in peoples hearts bring such variation. Sexual license. I am under grace so it does not matter who I have contact with.
I am under law, so one look, in the wrong way and I deserve death. I am perfect because I do not knowingly sin. I am a sinner because I stumble every now and then, and am very aware of my weaknesses. Everyone must know the trinity or they are lost. Without the emotional zap of the Holy Spirit it is just religion, failed hypocracy.

I am alone and empty and the Lord sounds nice, but no one cares. I follow Jesus but if God takes my child, that is too much. I hate my family because God told me I had to. Marriage is for life, even if abusive. Rape is ok if it is your wife.
Hell is eternal torture, where you are roasted screaming alive.

I could go through each statement and give you my perspective but it would not be short. All the above have been talked about, and the difference of opinion is vast. So it takes a lot of growth to take this on.

As a dad I smacked my kids. Rarely, and probably now I would not, but it showed for different people some things are terrible trauma, while others, like a day playing a rough game.

Why am I saying this? Because we need to take seriously we are the product of our life history, and that makes us come out with simple one off conclusions, which get jolted when we meet people from another background, who we then miss-understand and easily say, "they have a demon" rather than, that is interesting, why do you think like that?
The truth is when the Holy Spirit ministers to you that Jesus is The Way, The Truth and The Light that makes one monumental impact on a person. Yes it can take time to apply all we need to, but that is what this forum is about, people helping people that are seeking, not putting up with trolls!

VERY significant.

I was a "Christian" by means of mental assent and obtained knowledge... logical deduction, if you will. I was raised a Baptist, and absorbed many of their esoteric hang-ups. Then I "doubled-down", and joined the Church of Christ for my graduate work, where I got even "sounder" and "sounder" and "sounder" , sinking into the indoctrination of man's religion, and our perceived necessity to act, be, and look a certain way, in order to qualify as a "TRUE" Christian.

Then, after decades of this solid" teaching and living, a series of events had my wife and me looking for a church to attend that would match our expanding awareness of why Jesus walked this Earth. We probably attended two dozen different churches, of several denominations... even stayed at some for half a year, or so.... (One, Calvinistic place, about three years.)

I actually ran across The Vineyard because of all the naysayers I saw calling it a "cult." This piqued my interest (admittedly, just my humanistic desire for sensationalism kicking in... I wanted to make fun of them, too) But, as it turned out, when I got past all the "Haters" online, I found their genuine website. Dang! They seemed to read the Bible the same way I did, and believed in many of the same things I had come to understand as God's will. We had to go see for ourselves.

Well, there is only ONE Vineyard in all of the huge city I live in... it was a no-brainer as to which one to check out.

So we went....... and almost decided to never darken their doors again.

As "fate?" would have it, they were having a guest "band" and the leader was the preacher that day. Uggg! I hated it. My wife hated it. But something kept telling us to go back. We did. What a difference!

I think God might have been saying to us stuck-in-the-past worshipers of religion, "You ready to see why I sent My Son... or are you satisfied with the same sort of thing the Jews had perfected for themselves?" We were ready.

We immediately joined a "Grace" book study group. My eyes opened like I had never even known Christianity before. Two months into the study, I had a stroke that the doctors said should have killed me on the spot. But, in the hospital, where I was for a month, they never did a thing to me. No pills, no shots, no operation... nothing. Just "studied" me.

Well, about half way through the month, I was reading in bed (had the room to myself) somewhere after midnight, when I became aware of a "presence" sitting in the chair at the foot of my bed. Never really "saw" Him, nor had a verbal conversation with Him, but we shared three nights of just an "understood" sort of relating. And that was it.

From that night, forward, I knew that I had finally found what I thought I already had for all those years (three decades)
That was a dandy little story but it still doesn't explain why you are lax in scripture reference.

Probably because I try to live it, as opposed to just quoting it.

But, really, should it be, "I'll show everyone where you are wrong!" or should it be "Let me show you the "rightness" of Jesus."
Excommunication is the formal removal of an individual from church membership and the informal separation from that individual. Matthew 18:15-20 gives the procedure and authority for a church to do this. It instructs us that one individual (usually the offended party) is to go to the offending individual. If he/she does not repent, then two or three go to confirm the situation and the refusal to repent. If there is still no repentance, it is taken before the church. This process is never “desirable,” just as a father never delights in having to discipline his children. Often, though, it is necessary. The purpose is not to be mean-spirited or to display a “holier than thou” attitude. Rather, the goal is the restoration of the individual to full fellowship with both God and other believers. It is to be done in love toward the individual, in obedience and honor to God, and in godly fear for the sake of others in the church.

The Bible gives an example of the necessity of excommunication in a local church—the church at the city of Corinth (1 Corinthians 5:1-13). In this passage, the apostle Paul also gives some purposes behind the biblical use of excommunication. One reason (not directly found in the passage) is for the sake of the testimony of Christ Jesus (and His church) before unbelievers. When David sinned with Bathsheba, one of the consequences of his sin was that the name of the one true God was blasphemed by God's enemies (2 Samuel 12:14). A second reason is that sin is like a cancer; if allowed to exist, it spreads to those nearby in the same way that “a little yeast works through the whole batch of dough” (1 Corinthians 5:6-7). Also, Paul explains that Jesus saved us so that we might be set apart from sin, that we might be “unleavened” or free from that which causes spiritual decay (1 Corinthians 5:7-8). Christ's desire for His bride, the church, is that she might be pure and undefiled (Ephesians 5:25-27).

Excommunication is also for the long-term welfare of the one being disciplined by the church. Paul, in 1 Corinthians 5:5, states that excommunication is a way of delivering the unrepentant sinner “over to Satan, so that the sinful nature may be destroyed and his spirit saved on the day of the Lord.” This means that excommunication can somehow involve God’s using Satan (or one of his demons) as a disciplinary tool to work in the sinner's life physically to bring about true repentance in his/her heart.

Jesus faced the pharisees every day, and talked with them, while teaching the realities of walking with God. Are we not called to be doves, to be sheep, to be loving and understanding. Only when the light shines is the darkness understood for what it is, because it has gone.
I don't think he talked "to" them as much as they were around when he was talking..trying to trip him up and trap him

Amen. Emotional reality and what really matters to us is always more difficult to understand than we take credit for.

Peter said he would die for the Lord, yet denied him three times. Our problem is then to project our personal experience on to others, which may not be true at all.

The Lord uses situations to reveal the truth within if we are prepared to listen, the danger is if we think our failure is the same as others without first listening to them.

You know what's cool about Willie? He seems to be a bridge between folks with differing views. Sharing in a direct, straight forward manner with gentle understanding. I'd like to possess that gift but as for now I'm still turning over tables in the Temple against the Pharisees.
Get uh grip Utah! The Bible is is a bridge between folks.

For a while, I have been wondering what is troubling you... why you are so negative. But I think I am seeing. You actually had to delete part of their post to make it fit what you wanted to attack. That's kind of cheap.

You sound a bit separate. Jesus went into the synagogue and taught. From the age of 13 he went to the temple and taught. I think he understood them very well, and their ideas, and where their hypocracy really was.

He was very complementary. Do as they teach, not as they do.

The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.
Matt 23:2-4

So I think it is very important to know messages, and know why it fails. Are we overcomers, or do we fall at the first sign of an argument? Your biggest enemy knows your biggest weakness, so listen learn and deal with this. It works because it has impact.
