Let me state that I do not like nor read Bible commentaries.
But with that said, Do you think it wise for one to ALWAYS study alone, or would it be an advantage to study with others?

There's something to be gained in private (alone) study, and something to be gained in study with others.

Why do these things always have to be an either/or? Are we as a people becoming sooo polarized that it's impossible to see the middle ground?

According to Eph 4:11-14, it is Christ's gift to his church to supply it with
competent teachers. I suggest you take advantage of them or you not only
risk insulting Christ, but also falling for ideas that sound true; but are not.

†. 2Pet 3:15-16 . . Our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given
him, wrote to you, as also in all his letters, speaking in them of these things,
in which are some things hard to understand, which the untaught and
unstable distort, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures, to their own
destruction.

The "untaught and unstable" refers to people who feel that they can get by
without assistance from the Lord's teachers; and go the self-taught route.

No. You should study the Bible both alone and with other believers.

Both alone and in groups, with commentaries, and scholarly books and tools.

Wait, both means two, and that was more than two things! Forgive me for that!

I think nothing can replace devotional time with the Lord. It is our daily bread, and just reading, and reading the Word teaches us and helps us grow. The whole Word, Old and New Testaments, not just select parts.

And when we use other sources, or sit in groups, we do need to be discerning and test the spirits. That might mean going back to the Word, using a Concordance or other resource to check to see if the teaching is true or not. I learned an incredible amount about the Word in Seminary, although I had been a Christian who read the Bible through yearly for 25 years when I started.

Seminary taught me to really dig deep, and to question what others say. Not that everything I was taught was wrong, but the main thing I got from Seminary, besides ministry, was that as believers we all have to dig deep into God's Word, and not trust everything someone who proclaims themselves teacher, preacher or a scholar writes.

An example of group study...

Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.
(Act 17:11)

an example of individual study..

And he said, "How can I, unless someone guides me?" And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.

The Berean Jews were guided in their studies by two very competent
Christian teachers: Paul and Silas.

Some years ago I was invited to a home Bible study. I asked the person
inviting me if his group was led by a competent Bible teacher. He said "No;
we don't have a teacher. The group teaches itself. In other words: we speak
as the Spirit leads us to speak."

I declined because a Bible study without a competent Bible teacher isn't a
study at all: it's a bull session.

†. Luke 6:39 . . A blind man cannot guide a blind man, can he? Will they not
both fall into a pit?

I've studied alone, I've studied with others, and I've studied with commentators. The one thing I'm confused about is why are you asking?

Seems like you've already made up your mind what you won't do, so the only two things left is to study alone or study with others.

And even though they heard the report from the Apostles (guided by the Apostles as you say), they still as a group checked out what was being told them by the Apostles. They held their leaders to God's Word.

True, nevertheless God has given teachers to His Church...

And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.

Haven't read all the comments, so............But, in my opinion, it is very good to study the Bible. Alone, with a study group, in Sunday School, wherever, whenever one can. Study of the Word is always good for the soul.

The reason I do not like commentaries is because they seem to be trying to prove the authors belief.
I do not condem thoes who do, but caution those who do to do so with suspect---prove it with the Word.
I asked the question because often times poster answer questions or try to prove a point by refering to commentary or postion a video, and not using the Word.
Others have stated they are lead by the Holy Spirit, and we must be, but seemingly never with others, and I ask it that is wise.
I do study alone, Just me and my Lord and His Word, But I also discuss and study with others which I believe is the wise thing to do.

studying The Word alone or with the Body can be a good teacher -
but, 'if I do not live it', it profits me little.
