I may have commented on this in the distant past, can not remember, but I enjoy reading the Beatitudes, and thinking of their importance in the life of a believer. A friend of mine once said he believed the Beatitudes were the "stepping stones" of spiritual growth for a believer.

Wondering if anyone else has heard this or can comment on it?

Matthew
5

1 .) And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:
2 .) And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,
3 .) Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 .) Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
5 .) Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
6 .) Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
7 .) Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
8 .) Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
9 .) Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
10 .) Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 .) Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
12 .) Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

I'm not sure that I understand the question. When you say stepping stones of spiritual growth for a believer are you asking if there's a progression from one beatitude to another? In other words, are you asking if the first stepping stone is being poor in spirit and then we progress to mourning and then we progress to meekness, etc.?

The word beatitude basically means blessing, but we should also do a comparative study with Luke's account in chapter 6 of his gospel where he also includes the woes or curses. There are many who see a comparison between what Jesus did in His sermon on the mount and what the Israelites of old did when they pronounced both the blessings and the cursings upon a different mountain. Here's Luke's account:

Luke chapter 6 verses 20 thru 26

And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.
Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh.
Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake.
Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets.
But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation.
Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep.
Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.

Each one of the beatitudes represent a natural progressive development. Each one is built upon the one that precedes it ultimately resulting in a finished product.
