STRUCTURE OF THE OLD COVENANT

It is important to understand the structure of the Old Covenant, and how it compared to ancient Near East treaty documents.

When one nation was conquered by another, the conquering nation would create an agreement with the conquered nation which stipulated the terms of their relationship, and the blessings and cursings for obedience or disobedience. The document would bear the seal or sign of the conquering nation on the document.

Two identical copies of the document would be created. One would be kept in the sanctuary of the conquering nation, and the other copy of the document would be kept in the sanctuary of the conquered nation.

The Old Covenant relationship between God and the nation of Israel was conducted in a similar manner.Note that two copies of the Ten Commandments were given by God to Moses. These two copies of the Ten Commandments were placed in the Ark of the Covenant. The word “ark” simply refers to the container that held the Covenant, thus the name "ark of the covenant".Note that both of the copies were placed in the Ark as God’s presence dwelt with Israel.

The Ten Commandments were a summary of the Old Covenant. The interpretation of the Ten Commandments, with much more detail, was contained in a handwritten document called the “book of the covenant”, which was held in a receptacle on the side of the Ark of the Covenant.

The book of the covenant was not separate from the Old Covenant in terms of being separate from the Old Covenant, though, as the Seventh Day Adventists and much of orthodox Christianity seems to teach. The book of the covenant was a more in-depth interpretation of the Ten Commandments, although it included additional civil and ceremonial laws. However the Ten Commandments are inseparable from the Old Covenant.

Notice how the Ten Commandments are called the covenant in these verses: Ex 31:18, 34:28, 4:13, 9:9, 11, 15, I Kings 8:9, 21. In addition, the New Testament does not treat them as separate when discussing them in verses which refer to their temporary nature. This is an in-depth conversation deserving of a separate thread.

The Sabbath commandment is in the center of the Ten Commandments in terms of word count in the Hebrew. The conquering nation would place its sign or seal in the center of their covenant with the conquered nation. In a similar way, the Sabbath commandment is placed directly in the center of the Ten Commandments.

In summary, the structure of the Old Covenant included the sign of the Sabbath, placed in the center of the Ten Commandments, which itself was the Covenant. Interpretation of the Covenant in greater detail was contained in the book of the covenant. However, the Ten Commandments themselves were the covenant.

Scripture teaches that the Old Covenant was only temporary, until Christ came. This is taught clearly Galatians 3, as well as the Scriptures in the summary I will list below. The Ten Commandments were the summary of this Old Covenant, and thus are no longer applicable AS A WHOLE. However, nine of the commandments are moral in nature and would continue under the New Covenant, but not because they were part of the Old Covenant. They continue because they are moral absolutes, and are repeated other places in the apostolic writings.

This distinction might not mean much to other Christians, but for ex Sabbathkeeper like me, it is very important to making sense of Scripture.

I highly suggest the book Sabbath in Christ by Dale Ratzlaff for a deeper treatment of this subject.

The Old Covenant was an agreement between God and the nation of Israel (Ex. 31:12-17). The Ten Commandments are a summary of the Old Covenant (Ex 31:18, 34:28; Deut 4:13, 9:9, 11). The Sabbath and physical circumcision were signs of the Old Covenant (Genesis 17:9-14, Exodus 31:12-18, 20:12). The Old Covenant is no longer in effect for anyone (2 Cor 3:4-18, Gal 3:17-25, Heb 8:13-9:4). The Sabbath, therefore, is not in effect for anyone (Gal 4:10, Rom 14:5-6, Col 2:16-17). Christians are under the New Covenant, which has different signs (baptism and the Lord’s Supper), higher demands and different commandments (Luke 22:20, Heb 9:15; Jn 13:34, 15:12, 17; Rom 13:10). The chief of those commandments is to love others as Christ loved us (Jn 13:34).

Thought you might find this interesting Sparkman., I copied the differences of the old covenant and the new covenant of grace from one of my study books. The differences and what it means for us believers today. Used it on another thread but think it also applies here.

There also was a major change from the old covenant to the new covenant For the believer. The old testament saints did not have the Holy Spirit. They were still under law and had to continue making the sacrifices to atone for their sins. We do not have to do that today. Yes, Jesus atonement was made for ALL sins past present and future. All sin is paid for the same way but the covenants were different. I'm soo glad we do not live under the old covenant!! I never knew there was much difference from the old to the new and therefore I didn't know the promises that were mine as a new covenant believer either.

Consider the differences. The saints of old longed to have what we have today. Yet many of us live as old covenant believers when we are IN the new covenant of grace.

Consider the differences:

Under the old covenant of law vs the new covenant of grace.
OLD-God demanded righteousness from man. NEW-God imparts righteousness to man through the finished work of Jesus. Rom.4:5-7 OLD-God will visit your sins to the 3rd 4th generations. Ex.20:5 NEW-God will by no means remember your sins. Heb. 8:12;10:17

OLD- The children of Israel were blessed only if they obeyed God's commandments perfectly inwardly and outwardly Duet.28:13-14 NEW-Beleivers don't have to depend on their self-efforts to receive God's blessings, because Jesus fullfilled every one of the requirements of the law on their behalf. Col. 2:14
OLD-
They were cursed of they did not obey God's commandments perfectly Duet.28:15-16,18,20
NEW- Believers can enjoy God's blessings and undeserved favor because Christ became a curse for them on the cross. Gal.3:13

OLD- Depending on self-effort produces behavior modification without heart transformation. NEW- Beholding the loveliness of Jesus and His finished work brings about inner transformation, which produces good works that are motivated by God's love. 2 Cor.3:18

OLD-The blood sacrifices of animals covered the sins of the children of Israel for only one year, and the process had to be repeated every year Heb.10:3
NEW- The blood of Jesus has removed the sins--past,present and future of believers completely and perfectly, once and for all. Heb.10:11-12

OLD-Obeying the law could not and did not give the children of Israel the power to stop sin in their lives. The law has no power to make anyone holy, just and good. NEW-Sin has no dominion over believers Rom.6:14 as the power of Jesus to overcome temptation kicks in when they are conscience that they are righteous in Christ apart from their works Rom. 4:6

OLD- The children of Israel were robbed of their confidence in the goodness of God because they were always looking at themselves to see how well or poorly they performed (i.e. self-conscience) NEW-Believers can have a tremendous sense of confidence and security in Christ because they are now looking to Jesus and not themselves (i.e. Christ-conscience)

OLD-The Children of Israel could not have an intimate relationship with God because their unrighteousness put distance between them and God. NEW-Beleivers can enjoy close, intimate relationship with God as their Father because they are made righteous by faith in Jesus.
2 Cor.5:17; Rom.5:7-9 Heb.10:10

OLD-The Children of Israel could not enter the holy of holies (where the presence of God was) Only the high priest could, ant that only once a year, on the Day of Atonement. Lev.16:2, 14 NEW-Not only can believers enter God's holy presence, they can also come boldly to His throne of grace in their time of need because Jesus perfect atonement. Heb.4:16

OLD-The children of Israel were under the ministry of death. 2 Cor. 3:17
NEW- Believers are under the ministry of Jesus' abundant life. 2 Cor.3:6; John 10:10

As I look at these major differences it's amazing to realize how blessed we are today to be under the new covenant. How many Christians realize this difference? I encourage you to read the verses ( I copied this by hand so it would have taken really long to go to each vs as well.)
Be blessed!

Hi ladylynn,

I will copy it off and read it. I am sure I will agree with you on many points and perhaps agree with you on some. But such is life. :D

Regarding the Holy Spirit and OT saints, I believe that the OT saints did have the Holy Spirit indwelling them. However, the majority of Israelites under the Old Covenant did not.

In addition, I think you would know that I am not antinomian and believe that faith produces salvation, which produces good works and obedience. Obedience is a fruit of salvation. If a person has no concern for obeying God, then it's a proof they were never saved to start with. But, one never obeys to earn, merit or continue salvation. Faith is the cause of salvation, and salvation produces good works.

The biggest point I wanted to make with this thread, though, is to answer the question of obedience to what? The answer is the apostolic teachings and the teachings of Christ, not the Old Covenant ceremonial and ritualistic elements such as the Sabbath, holy days, and clean/unclean meat laws. Identifying the Sabbath as a sign of the Old Covenant, and integrally connected to that, is part of the reasoning, as we know the Old Covenant is not applicable to New Covenant believers.

I Peter 1:11 inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories.

ladylynn, I meant to refer to this verse.

I know that there are indications in the OT about the Spirit coming upon OT saints, but I believe that related to specific empowerment at different times for acts of supernatural strength or inspiration.

I do think that the OT saints (of which there were relatively few) were indwelt with the Holy Spirit.

By the way I bet you'd really enjoy Dale Ratzlaff's book "Sabbath in Christ". It covers points such as what you brought up. It is amazing how many pictures of Christ there are in the OT.

I like the things you typed here Sparkman., Unlike the old testament saints , we have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit when we get saved. The HS came upon some of them like you said in the OT but they were not sealed like we are today. Sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise.

1 Pet.1:10-12 Though the OT prophets spoke of grace being given to Gentiles, they did not understand all that was involved in God's saving Gentiles through a suffering Messiah (see Col. 1:26-27) The OT prophets did predict both the suffering (Isa.53) and glory (Isa.11)
of the Messiah, without distinguishing that the fomer would be fulfilled at His first coming and the latter at His second. (NAS study Bible)

Again, they had such a different relationship with God under old covenant. They didn't have the finished Word of God like we do either. Even the prophets didn't have such as we do under the new covenant. 1 Pet.2:9,10

it is really interesting to study the relationship between the mosaic covenant and the treaties of that time period...the parallels are especially clear in deuteronomy which basically -is- a treaty document between God and israel...

the fact that both the ruler and the vassal held a copy of their covenant document makes me wonder about the significance of john seeing the ark of the covenant in heaven in the vision he describes in revelation...

Yes..that's a cool comment. I didn't understand it when I first read it.

Here's a puzzle, though..I tend to view heaven as a state of being rather than a place, but since we are talking about objects being there, that affects my paradigm. I am not sure about that issue anyways.
