How much pain are you in, how long has it been going on? Is it upper or lower, on one side, all over? Is it from exerting yourself (exercising, lifting something heavy, mowing lawn, etc) or did you maybe sleep in a weird position? Is your bed mattress in good shape? You don't have to post the answers here if it's personal, but those are some things to consider. If it's been more than a few days, or if you get worse, I'd go to an urgent care type clinic (usually cheap with and without insurance) to see if it is serious

I'm not any kind of medical professional, but I recently had an issue with muscle spasms in my left hip from overdoing it playing outdoors...some of the general advice I received (after receiving a few shots and an rx for muscle relaxers) was to
-Keep moving, don't let your muscles become stiff.
-Take a shower and alternate between real hot and real cold water
- use ice/hot pad for 15-20 minutes at a time

Use heat..lots of heat..it relaxes the muscles. :) Eat tart cherries (found in dried fruit section) and eat a few spoonfuls of honey per day.. Tart cherries and honey are natural anti-inflammatories. :) The WORST thing you can do for a sore back is stretching, bending, squatting, etc.. I've had back problems for the last 20 years so I know what I'm talking about. :)

Try some heat wraps that you can wear. I LOVE Thermacare heat wraps, they work miracles. Put them on over your shirt, though, not against your skin directly. If you take pain reliever, try using Aleve instead of Advil. 2 Aleve last all day, whereas you have to take Advil or ibuprofen every 4-6 hours.

if it's related to muscle pain or injury, arnica cream may be helpful.

is the pain of long duration? seeing a doc might be prudent. :)

I was in my 40's when I stumped my toe against a parking concrete block at work. The next morning, at my work desk, my back locked up and I could not move. My company got me to a chiropracter and they discovered that I had an undiagnosed childhood spinal condition. For 17 weeks, I was in all kinds of therapy and I was finally released, feeling so much better! Within days my back kept getting stiffer. At 2 a.m I crawled to my living room in extreme pain. I did not want to disturb my sleeping wife. I turned it all over to GOD..I begged, I pleaded, I cried out to HIM in my hour of need. All of a sudden, something brushed my back. I thought one of my children had done it and I jumped up. There was NO pain! I was doing jumping jacks in my living room at 2:30 a.m. That is my personal remedy for sore backs!

Hi there, the cause of most back pain and pain in general is dehydration. I've personally witnessed many people relieved of all sorts of pain, including back pain with in a maximum of a couple of days with the regular intake of UNREFINED salt and water. Some have reported relief within hours and even minutes for a person who was suffering many months with Sciatic Nerve Pain.

This simple remedy has been coined the WATER CURE which is based on the works of Dr Batmanghelidj and has been compiled in a book called, "Your Bodies Many Cries For Water!"

There are 3 websites I recommend:

watercure.com - the Dr's website
watercure2.org - Ex-patient and friend of the Dr who continues to spread his work.
watercuretribute.com - to calculate your daily requirements of UNREFINED salt and water based on your weight.

I hope you find relief in this asap!

See a physiotherapist who is a sports therapist. They will give you exercises to strengthen your back. I had a bad car accident 30 years ago, and the only thing that has really helped is weights and stretches.

Just don't get a physiotherapist who puts machines on you and doesn't get you back moving, stretching and strengthening.

Hi all, I just thought to add a spiritual element to this post for encouragement coz I can't help but see the parallel. In the Bible Water is often used as a metaphor for the Spirit of God, in that He quenches our Spiritual thirst. And Jesus told us that we are the salt of the earth and to have salt in ourselves. I used to think this was because salt could be stingy :) but that was until I learned and tried the Water Cure's recommendations for unrefined salt and water, and my view of both salt and Christians was forever changed!

Hope this helps somebody and may God bless us all!

About four years ago I was suffering for months with lower back pain. Each morning I would wake up unable to bend. I would painfully build enough momentum rocking back and forth to roll over off of the bed. Once mobile I would eventually loosen up and only have mild discomfort until the next morning. I decided to look up exercises to help lower back pain. I did them every morning for two weeks and then stopped because I was completely free of any discomfort, even to this day.

The exercises were

1. Get on the ground in a push up position, then as if your hips were glued to the floor, do one. Hold that position for 30 secs or so then return to resting position. Rest 30 secs and repeat 5 times.

2. Get in a sit up position with your knees bent and feet flat on floor. Then push the small of your back into the floor as if to touch it with your navel. Hold 30 secs, rest 30 secs. repeat 5 times.

I hope it works for you as good as it did me. I wish I had done it sooner.

Only thing I would add is to NOT use heat on a muscle until AFTER it has quit going through the initial reactions to possible injury. Only ice at first.

Yeah, right. Doing that would kill MY back. When I'm down, I literally don't have the strength to pull myself up. I have to crawl to the nearest piece of solid furniture and pull myself back up. :( No floor exercises for THIS ladybug.. no sirreee.. lol.. :)

Like i said, when I am down, I CANNOT GET UP. I don't need to try to know whether I can or not.. if I kneel or squat, I'm stuck so as I said, no floor exercises for me..
