I wonder how many people defend being sarcastic themselves, but would immediately get all offended when someone is sarcastic towards them.....I can see a point this dude is trying to make...Jesus may have been sarcastic, although it can be noticed this is when he KNEW their heart and all other methods would fall on deaf ears...Paul was sarcastic, but he still exhibited the character of regarding others as higher than himself...saying I beseech thee, suffer me to speak etc...I believe within being sarcastic we should still show we do not think of ourselves higher than another in our methods, which those methods would then reveal superiority in our own heart...We could consider that in our motive to help others, if we tear down, should we walk away to leave others to build that person back up again leaving an open door for the enemy to rush in...or if we tear down should we not then build back up in the Lord...this offered me some things to think about...I feel blessed for this thread as controversial as it is.

I do believe that we do need to live in such a way that is pure and honorable. However, I have heard many times throughout the Bible of God being sarcastic as well as Jesus.
I am also sarcastic and I can take sarcasm when it's given to me. Thank God that my works do not get me to heaven. You say that sarcasm has its place in hell....but so does lying, so does lustful thoughts, so does disrespecting your parents, so does stealing, etc. etc. The list can go on and on. I am just grateful for Jesus' death on the cross that reconciled me with God, that made me no longer enemies but friends with Him.
I see nothing wrong with sarcasm if it is done right haha. I do believe some sarcasm can totally cross lines and boundaries and can be hurtful and I feel that kind of sarcasm can be awful and should be stayed away. But, if sarcasm is done right, I don't see anything wrong with it. It's all based on the motivation and why you want to do sarcasm is the real issue

I believe that was a well deserved rebuke Elin, straight to the point and heart of the matter. Although 1 Cor 4:21 looks like a little bit of sarcasm mixed in giving those deserving of rebuke a choice in the matter in how they are admonished. Not everyone knew the Good News then... Shows Paul can deliver lovingly if they are willing to receive...otherwise...well...then there is the other alternative...but I am reminded of those who teach which if we are leading anybody we are teaching them....leading them closer to Christ to remember with our own brothers and sisters Eph 4....1 As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. 2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. 3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace...Different people must be dealt with differently....there is no political correctness...but we should take care of our own...those in the church with a little more care than those outside of it who refuse it.

The only way Paul would ever build them up again is by their abandoning their false doctrine and heresy.
There is no "building up" of false doctrine, rather it must be exposed for what it is--contrary to the NT word of God.
And that is never a pleasant experience, for anyone involved in it.

I suppose an easier way to look at it is this.....when we're being sarcastic, are we being worldly, for entertainment, for onlookers, while forgetting random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty. I like beauty

Good point there Miss Elin...they should not be rewarded for bad conduct...until they repent and change their behavior...the thing is though...many people today are so far from God, they don't recognize that sort of Godly authority which should change their heart...so I try to balance both methods accordingly reminding myself of this.... "He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get?"....While I believe Paul was disciplining even being sarcastic out of Love...The world today is so far from respecting any Godly discipline they would view it as Hatred instead of Love.....How do we temper that?

A man of God admonishes fellow believers to speak kindly to one another, to understand that our conversations should be holy in nature, and not inteneded to hurt, and that we should righteously judge situations and sin, as such. A man of God admonishes men and women alike to be humble and speak with a contrite heart, to bring about fruits of holiness from young believers who are in love with Jesus...exhorting that the seek to avoid strife. I am the man of God who faithfully carried my cross- and this is the kind of reply suffered.
Disagreeing with Holy Scripture and loving rebuke, and replying with condescension and doubt, do only gender strife....which the Lord will avenge. An unrepentant hard heart does little for the kingdom of God, and in many cases hinders the work within, and without. I forgive you for sowing bad seed next. In time, i pray you will find it in your heart to accept the fact that some men, led by the Holy Spirit, DO speak for God - by quoting scripture, and that you are subject to those Holy Spirit led men.
Please repent of having a stiff neck and kicking against the pricks. The Word of God has exposed your true nature, and what has issued forth from your mind has revealed the motive and darkness in your dark heart. You do despise teachers of truth and holiness. Repent of your hard hearted rebellion and humble yourself before the altar of the Lord. Pray for His peace to be with you, and that His Holy Spirit would cause you to bear fruit worthy of being called Christian.
In Love i beseech you to reconsider your ways, and repent. There are things the Lord hates, and hands swift to shed innocent blood are one of them. Anyone who hates without cause is guilty of murder.

Let us seek to upbraid and not downgrade, for it is our job to comfort the feeble and be patient with the less learned....

sarcasm is basically taking someone's ridiculous opinion and restating it with a tone that makes it clear how ridiculous it actually is...
people seem to object to sarcasm mainly because they don't like their opinions being exposed as ridiculous...not coincidentally the ones who object most strongly to sarcasm seem to be the ones with the most ridiculous opinions...
