I always wondered who comes up with these silly words, that have become part of the conversation. Is it the media? If so, how many media outlet, and who makes it "official"?

So does this, I can come up with a word and get like a few 100,000 people and it becomes an a saying like Friend-zone?

Bowharp...who came up with Bowharp. I like it.

Word etymology is enlightening. Enjoy study of words.

In So Cal a couple of years back a term coined by one man to explain the traffic nightmare that was expected to occur on freeway during highway crossover replacement. The word: Carmageddon!.

Our lanes on freeway for 2 or more passengers were at one time called Carpool Lanes. Someone from the South or back East moved in, got hired on as freeway dictator and he or she changed Carpool Lane to HOV: High Occupancy Vehicle lane.

Friend-zone! I ain't walking through there. Sounds strange.

The media parrots words and phrases. Here's one I hate: At the end of the day. Political babble as well, at the end of the day, it is.

The school is in Lockdown. Lockdown? A school in lockdown! All that means is: The school has no armed security, no armed staff, but there's an armed lunatic on campus. Help!

It's not Illegal immigration: It's Undocumented immigrants. Bah! That's liberal. Yes, that includes the media.

Several years ago Absolutely was used by everyone and anyone on TV. All it meant when used was Yes. But that's too simple. Ab so lute ly - 4 syllables. Yes - 1 syllable. I prefer Yes, absolutely I do.

Schools in So Cal have Smoke Free Zones. You can be fined if you smoke a cigarette on campus or within a certain number of feet of a school. First, there's nothing smoke free zone in So California. That's right, the eco green cars and inventions haven't changed the color of our smog. It's still grey and thick. Ok. So smoke free zone simply means: No Smoking. Do not smoke here. Use your brain, kids are close by, No smoking.

But NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, it's got to be so friendly Smoke Free Zone. I know this, the Smoke Free Zone ain't a Friend-Zone. Not for smokers. For them it's an Angry-Zone.

The better the word, the more chance of it becoming popular. Right word by right person used at right time has a good chance of a long life. Media, politicians, and even kids are part of coining new words.

Hey, here's one: Wordpop. I just made that up. Wordpop. A word that becomes popular.

every time i go in the bosses office its an Angry-Zone.

We need a wordsmith here.

i cant do it. im more of a history/anthropology/renaissance kind of guy. not as exciting as galahad.

no word games now im going into a bummed-out-zone . . . .

Same. I'm more into maths/programming/science/technology kind of girl.

I feel like a goose.

Or, was it a duck?

For example, the word.. Sandman? Where did that came from? Taking a look from the below video, it looks like it came around the 50s era. Where did it origined and who made it official? Kinda strange word, if you ask me.

sandman scared the crap out of me when i was a kid. to this day if i see a sandman in the room i just grab my kids and run!

These words and terms are most always developed in the corporate world. They serve the purpose of disguising and sugar coating unsavory ideas and concepts, they are known as ''Weasel words''

Corporate America we can thank for some.

Nat geo used to be national geographic

SciFi used to be science fiction but even scifi was to many letters so now SyFy

Talk about the dumbing down of America.........

ok guys , just so you know, i just got a bunch of likes on this thread from galahad so it could mean we might get another one of his exciting word games. lol im such a dork!

Isn't that how languages evolve and grow? Even among English speaking countries the slang terms vary often. 'Fag' in the U.S. does not mean the same in England, for example. How many 'silly' words do you use without realizing it, that are just cultural slang? Do you ever say things such as 'that's cool'? It's just the natural progression of language.

i think of these all the time but i have to be driving down the road by myself.
why do they say stat in the hospital or asap in the army, out in the country we just say hurry or now! but we are just simple people, we dont waste thought on words that are completely arbitrary.

i think i got something. i hope i am playing the game right, im still not sure how it works.

goods are made in a factory, they are manufactured, then they go on a boat, boats are always female, the boat is in a harbor or at berth, the goods go on the boat and sent out for delivery.

man - female - birth - delivery.

funny the things you think about when your by yourself driving down the road.
