Lewis was Anglican, Church of England, which I believe is called Episcopalian in the USA. Pretty much everyone was Church of England those days, including the unsaved, since infant baptism was supposed to save you. It was one of the first churches to break away from Rome and the RCC.
I'm sure you all remember King Henry VIII. Well, the pope wouldn't give him a divorce from his wife, Anne Boleyn, who only managed to produce a measly daughter, who became Elizabeth I. During her reign, the British Empire became the strongest Empire in the world, which basically lasted until WWI took too much of of them, and they lost their dominance to the American Empire.
So Henry chopped off Anne's head, and went through a lot of other wives, before he finally produced a sickly son with inherited syphilis, who died a teenager. And the daughter of the wife whose head he chopped off, and defied Rome to get rid of her, became on of the greatest Queens who ever lived!
Or something like that!
