Matthew 23? Are we to be calling others father? I know scripture says about being born to flesh fathers, and I know God called them fathers...but at the same time he says call no man father, but me! Does that only apply in authority? As in converting, or standing on God's truth?

Same thing with calling someone master, rabbi, teacher!

Does it refer to just understanding that God is the main authority?

It means this man Jorge Mario Bergoglio is not to be called father or priest. It means God sees the heart of all people. He does not see or value any person above another.

You go to the heavenly Father in the name of Jesus.
Jorge M.B. does not have a special pass to the heavenly Father. If wishes and hopes to be able to be with our Father in heaven, then Jorge M.B. is going to have to be in Christ Jesus.
You have fellowship with the Father. Again that's through Jesus Christ. W

Jorge M.B. thinks he is someone special. A step up above all others. He accepts the title of Father. He accepts the work to which he was voted into. But it don't matter. It don't matter one bit how much that man does, how many people adore him, how white his clothes are, how grand his mansion is, he's not above you or I. y

I have never called another person: reverend, father (except in biological sense as with mother), rabbi, pastor, etc.

Now Obama is supposedly meeting with Jorge M.B. Wonder how he will treat Jorge. Wonder what Jorge will say to Obama. If John the Baptist...boy, he would take that opportunity to set Obama straight. He would address his arrogance and disdain for the truth. Obama says he is a Christian!

Both men will approach and address each other with no regard for the truth in any way, shape, form, or fashion.

It will be a show. All politics.

It is to be taken in the Spiritual tense, not the physical earthly father tense.

In other words no man on earth is to be called our Spiritual Father, Spiritual Teacher, and Spiritual Rabbi, for their is only One who receives this title and that is the Lord our God.

For no man can take credit for giving His teachings and commands on their own, as we are just vessels to instruct others in those teachings already given.

This is another example that if anything being taught by a person waivers from the Truth that Jesus already taught in the Gospel books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John then those teachings are not from God.

Lord Jesus is the only foundation of our faith that we are told to build on in our life, if what we are being taught does not align with His words then they are from man.

Example would be: Pope- which means in place of, or Holy Father

It is wrong to use that title by them because he maybe a representative of the Lord here on earth, but all of us are representatives of the Lord here on earth as we are all part of the same body in Christ.
 
Thank you both very very much, I so needed that! What if the biological father, is not following Torah and he tells you to do something different from God's will (like inappropriate submission)? Can we tell him "No!" or bear it?
 
I also believe that Obama, nor Jorge M.B. will be doing what they should! :(

That is the context in that scripture which is why Father is capitalized in our English versions to show that to use, as the original Greek in this text means Spiritual Father.

We have One Teacher in the Lord our God, compare this passage with that of Ephesians 4:3-6, 1 Corinthians 3, and this:

1 Corinthians 4:15
For though ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel.

You can call him father, dad, daddy, papa, elder, or anything else you like as long as it is respectful......lol

You just can not do it in the Spiritual since of Father, as in putting him in place of God !!!

[8] But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all brethren.
[9] And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven.
[10] Neither be called masters, for you have one master, the Christ. Matt 23:8-10 RSV

God is teaching us to be humble. He is the teacher, Father, and master. We aren't to take credit for the work that he did.

The Berean spirit is good.

Calling your male parent - the male who begot you - father is different from calling a male religious leader father.

The context of Matthew 23 will show that the "call no man father" is applied to set the record straight. And that God does not acknowledge, accept the hierarchy of authority arranged by man. Why call a bible teacher Father? Why? It's so the religious leaders can retain power and control over the people. Why? Why the control? Well you just watch that man in the white garment. All in the power and riches of Catholic leadership. That little fellow is coming to the US. He'll be all about here and there and be praised as if he were something almighty. As if he is above all others.

He needs Jesus just as everyone else done.

I don't hate them. I don't. But the Catholic leaders are a mob. They are like Communist leaders. They rob from the poor and fill their own bellies and desires. And I've yet to hear anyone of those leaders point people to the bible. "Read the bible. Read it. Study it. Learn it. Apply it. Challenge us. Question our teaching."

Paul called Timothy his son in the faith. But Paul was NOT commanding Timothy to call Paul father. Paul was expressing how close a relationship he had with Timothy. Like father and son, but in the faith.

The Jews and even the apostle Paul used this: The God of our fathers, the God Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. See, those men were the progenitors of the nation of Israel. They were the fathers. They "fathered" the nation of Israel. We have founding fathers of our nation.

Jesus accepted the designation of male progenitors. He said I've come to set mother against daughter, father against son. He recognized the distinguish between the male parent and the child. In the family, the male parent and female parent do have the authority over the child.
