What are you auditioning for??
I am a sometimes member of a community choir - I say sometimes, because I usually join them after their Christmas concert because that always conflicts with Nutcracker performances I do in the bay area.

Anyway, they put on a cabaret type show around Feb/Mar. Last year's theme was broadway, and I did a small solo for our "Les Miserables" medley (which made it all the more fun for me to see "Les Miz" at our meetup a few months back, since I had never seen the show before).

But they also have solo or small group acts separate from the choir. One of the ladies last year hired me to arrange a piece of music to prep for her vocal audition (I would have done it for free since it was Sondheim - shhhh! Don't tell her!). She's hiring me again for whatever she will audition for this year. The process kind of encouraged me to audition this year for one of the solo acts. I'm not as comfortable singing as I am with playing the French horn or piano, so this is a way for me to challenge myself to step out of my comfort zone.

The theme is "travelling"...or something like that...they never really defined it. But we are pretty safe with songs about travelling, saying goodbye, going on a journey, etc. The choir is mostly a bunch of older people, so I imagine we will have a lot of Doris Day wannabes with "Sentimental Journey," which is gonna be a hoot!

So I am gonna try to get some Tom Waits in there. I'm doing "Foreign Affair," which is not the most Christian of songs, as it is about having a tryst while traveling abroad...

Here is Tom Wait's version:

and another interpretation by Manhattan Transfer:

(can't post two videos, so provided link)

I'm finding that I am doing something between the two... We'll see how it goes :D

Feb/March? Hmmm..... what an interesting time of year for a thing. :)

I'm a fan of Sondheim too, but will do no arranging, just the singing bits. When do you audition?

Auditions for the small acts are sometime in late October early November. The director wants to have the show pretty much programmed by then so he can focus on the Christmas concerts, then have everything in place when we resume rehearsals in January (which is when I rejoin them).

Yes, it is an odd time, but the concert we do in the Spring is a more traditional one - what you would expect from a choir. For many, the cabaret show is the most fun. It's actually my least favorite, because there is too much to memorize - my musical Achilles heel.

its china-mart er wal-mart what do you expect
I know right. How silly of me to expect her to say "Oh, I'm sorry" or "I hope he feels better" after asking me if everything was ok. Ugh. I hope walmart stock sinks like the titanic! :p

Had that happened at my booth, you'd have been the recipient of a hand or arm squeeze and a, "I'm sorry, that sounds hard. What's your dad's name so I can pray for him and you?"

BTW? Still praying for your situation there, and for dad.

Thank you, Olerica. :) This was an older lady too, so I was even more shocked. I'll PM you. :)

I rarely go into Walmart anymore. I just really don't like their stores....

Well. I take that back. There's one kind of Walmart that I don't mind. They're much smaller and smaller-ran. They're called Walmart Marketplace or something like that. The customer service was way better and everyone was so nice and the overall atmosphere was way better.

Well it is one of the blue chip stocks, so at least you aren't alone. Seriously though, their stock hasn't been doing too well lately and sales have been dropping because people are starting to shop elsewhere like amazon, target and costco.

Do you ever start cooking dinner but have no idea what the end result is supposed to be? I mean, aside from just edible.

I guess it's just...chicken. That's what I started with, anyway.

I hate cooking. The more I cook, the more I'm like...this is a terrible thing to make a person have to do. But! I do like for my family to have full tummies, so there's a bright side.

On the bright side, (or should I say 'dark side')...
I picked up these two little guys for a steal since they're selling for only 1/3rd the price on amazon. :)

I've always wanted my own x-wing and tie-fighter. :)

I wouldn't if I were you. Luke had a chance to fly one once. In his opinion... well, I'll quote from the book.

"It was a TIE fighter, part of the Republic's share of the loot when the planet kicked the Empire out. Luke planned to recommend it be shredded for flak. It turned and accelerated like a terrified womp rat, but it wobbled, unstable in every plane."

Yes ma'am! :D If I could afford it, I'd have a room full of miniature planes. As of now I only have a collection of five, not including my two new star wars ones..

That's probably because Luke is used to flying spacecraft made by Boeing and TIE fighters are made by Airbus.
