And discovers that Starfleet doesn’t have escape pod technology—only transporters and space shuttles.

Perfect timing, Captain. Starfleet just e-mailed us the new codes to de-activate the self-destruct sequence. I have my code right here on my computer. Do you have YOUR code? We both have to enter our codes for de-activation.
NEW codes? I haven’t checked my e-mail in months.
