I am doing a paper on hunting. Laws are being Purposed to take away the rights of hunters. Preserving a species and animal crudity are some of the issues. Please tell me,

Why you hunt?

Amount of pain the animal is thought to go through?

What have your children learned through hunting?

Do you believe Environment damage by hunters through, make unnatural clearnings, camping, cutting down trees, vehicles damage and changing the animals eating habits by food station

Argument is hunting causes a decline in the overall health of an animals species. Most predators will go after the small or sick animals but when humans hunt they leave behind the small and sick and kill only the large, strong and healthy

Uh....why does one HUNT? What about becoming "FISHERS of MEN"? Perhaps that would make a more appropriate topic in this CHRIST centered CHRISTIAN chatroom. Who actually cares 'Why you hunt?" Will this matter when you face GOD? Why did you post this here and now? Oops...did you think that environment damage, pain that animals go through is as important as spreading the GOSPEL here online? Your topic is so needed....in a hunting chatroom where you and more of your outdoorsmen/hunters can sit, chat and discuss your similar experiences where it is appropriate. If you think that hunting animals is important here in a CHRISTIAN chatroom, try going to an automobile chatroom and discuss your grandmother's favorite pie recipe...no difference. Duh!

Thank you for your comment. Because the issue of kindness to animals is woven throughout the Bible, I thought this would be an ok topic in the miscellaneous area. There was a time in the Bible where it was forbidden to eat meat. Many times in the Bible people are not eating meat but only grains. Meat seems to be eaten during the high holy days. In the wilderness the children of Israel were punished for crying out to eat meat. I was looking for answers for both sides of the argument not just one point of view. Thank you

Shilo, please don't let his rudeness discourage you. It's a valid question.

1.) I don't hunt.

2.) Have you ever had an arrow or bullet rip through YOUR skin? I'm sure it hurts hella alot..

3.) I don't have kids..

There's a reason why some animals are on the endangered species list. In my state, you can shoot bucks but not does... But you gotta remember if you kill all the male deer, how are the females gonna reproduce? They can't impregnate themselves..lol

"Because the issue of kindness to animals is woven throughout the Bible......." ??????

I'll bet you can't begin to count the number of animals whose throats were slit as sacrifices.

Please include verses about being forbidden to eat meat. In the wilderness they were sick because of their complaints and lack of faith not because of meat itself.
As for hunting, I don't believe it is cruel, unless you go around maiming animals. When the bible mentions about being kind to your animals its an agricultural thing, allowing them to rest, not hurting them and driving too much, common sense care for those with a soft heart. Its not about you shouldn't hunt animals.

I don't see a lot of messages on here by hunters, so I hope my reply helps you some.

I hunt because it is a moment of quiet and stillness in my busy life, it is a moment to enjoy God and His creation that I cherish. Also, the meat we get helps to feed us in the winter. It is a time to be with family and to be out in nature.

I practice shooting before I go out to the field, and the animals I've shot have died instantly. with a textbook shot, there is less than 5 seconds when the animal can feel pain, and then it is brain-dead.

I am the child of hunters, as apposed to having children learn from my hunting, so I'm going to answer this question in terms of what I've learned :) there are so many things that I would never have experienced except through hunting, the beauty of the sunrise on a frosty morning, the stillness of the woods before the sun comes up, just exactly how loud squires can be, and a lot more, and I feel like it has drawn me closer to the God who designed and made it all. I've also learned valuable life lessons such as how to field dress an animal, and how to handle a firearm safely.

I have done none of the environmentally harmful things that you mentioned, though I know of hunters who do, it all depends on your ethics, which in some hunters are deplorably lacking.

And as for depleting population the DNR (Department of Natural Resources) works very hard to balance the population; the same habitat that sustains 10 deer in the summer will not sustain so many in the winter, hunting humanly trims them so instead of having 10 weak, starving deer, there are 6 healthy deer.

I realize this is an unpopular subject, and those of you who object to hunting, I respect that. I am not writing this to argue with you or to wound your feelings, I am simply supplying a hunters viewpoint for Shilo to hopefully write a balanced paper. I hope this helps you, sister!

I'm not a hunter, but I do believe in the right of people to hunt.

Regarding the sustainability of hunting, I used to live in an area where hunting was very much diminished, and the deer were running rampant -- they actually were endangering the environment themselves and made it dangerous to drive on the roads. There were simply too many deer.

God commanded us to take care of the earth and all the animals -- that includes being ethical in our hunting habits (sounds like you got that down, Tinuviel).

I used to hunt, one of the biggest reasons we hunted was for food... $20.00 in ammo... A weekend in the mountains and you come home with a freezer full of food... Can't beat that deal no matter how much you have in coupons...

As far as the animal dying humanly: let me ask a question... How does a pack of wolves kill an elk or deer?
One jumps on its back and tears its loins apart to weaken the animal, the others go for its tendons on its legs to cripple to animal. And another with go for its throat strangling the animal to death.

With a gun, the animal has no time to react before its dead. A clean shot to the heart or lungs stops the animal where it stands. There is no prolonged death like what other animals do.
Wolves will actually eat the Elk or Deer alive not worrying to kill it...

As far as it destroying populations of game. I suggest anyone who holds that though come out to my neck of the woods... Any one can buy a tag to hunt in my state... And the elk and deer populations are still out of control...

As far as anyone saying that we are destroying the environment... I suggest they go out hunting and show me all this environment killing litter...
See when you are hunting, your top priority is to blend in with your surroundings and any hunter will tell you... If you open up a bag of chips, or a sandwich.. Every animal in that area knows exactly where you are because of the smell... What many people don't realize is any good hunter realizes that in order to get an animal you have to blend in with the environment which means no foreign smells can go with you.

Also for hunters only killing the large and strong animals... That is a hoot, no offence... The bigger the rack on a deer or elk, the more likely it is going to die that year... The trophy animals that you see are not the strongest animals in the Forrest, but the oldest ones...
Let me give an example, lets say we didn't shave our hair our whole life... Would the strongest people have the longest hair, or would it be the oldest people?
Many people who hold that view have no idea how animals act or anything for that matter... They see a giant rack on an elk and think a hunter killed the strongest elk... In actuality the hunter killed the oldest elk, and elk that was likely to die that year anyway...

Furthermore many animals will not eat sick animals... Wolves, Mountain lions, Bears: they all stay away from sick animals because they do not want to be sick...

Wolves, Mountainlions, Bears: they all go after the young animals... Whether they are hurt or not, they eat the young because its the easiest to hunt...

Also the male elk do not stay with the heard... After the rut (breeding season) bull elk leave the herd and live by themselves the whole year... Killing a "strong" male elk does not make it easier for predators to kill young elk... Because male elk do not protect the calfs...
Same goes with deer, the mother raises the fawns and the buck is no where to be found...

Anyone who says killing the "strong" makes it easier to kill the young or weak have no idea how animals live...

I also find it funny that one would consider a hunter damaging the environment... But not a city... Again it is against a hunters agenda to damage the environment yet, people who hold these beliefs live in cities which have destroyed entire ecosystems with a concrete jungle...

Genesis 1:29 Then God said, "Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you;

Genesis 9:3"Every moving thing that is alive shall be food for you; I give all to you, as I gave the green plant. 4"Only you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood.

Man was not given the right to eat meat until after the flood.

In the wilderness they were sick because of their complaints and lack of faith not because of meat itself. You are right they were sick because of their lack of faith, but part of their complaints was about the food.

Numbers 21:5The people spoke against God and Moses, "Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this miserable food." 6The LORD sent fiery serpents among the people and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died

Numbers 11:32 And the people stayed up all that day, all night, and all the next day, and gathered the quail (he who gathered least gathered ten homers); and they spread them out for themselves all around the camp. 33 But while the meat was still between their teeth, before it was chewed, the wrath of the Lord was aroused against the people

Goodness. Some Christians make out Jesus to be a vegan! If you took the Bible as evidence, which you should, it seems Jesus has a hankering for broiled fish and a few drinks of wine. Ha!

Why are you doing a paper on hunting?
I did not chose the topic of the paper. The paper is for my Texas Government college class. I do not hunt. I am not against hunting I just don't know much about it. The paper is to be based on: [h=2]Proposition 6 (SJR 22)[/h]SJR 22 proposes a constitutional amendment that would add the right to hunt, fish and harvest wildlife, including by use of traditional methods, in the Bill of Rights of the Texas Constitution. This right would be subject to laws and regulations intended to conserve and manage wildlife and to preserve the future of hunting and fishing. The proposed amendment would establish hunting and fishing as the preferred method of managing and controlling wildlife in Texas. The proposed amendment is not intended to affect any law or provision related to trespass, property rights or eminent domain, and would not prevent the legislature from authorizing a municipality to regulate the discharge of a firearm in a populated area in the interest of safety.
The proposed amendment will appear on the ballot as follows: “The constitutional amendment recognizing the right of the people to hunt, fish, and harvest wildlife subject to laws that promote wildlife conservation.”

i love this one

Whoever is righteous has regard for the life of his beast,
but the mercy of the wicked is cruel.

(Proverbs 12:10)

i was going to point out that people who know what they are doing don't let a hunted animal suffer. they aim for a shot that kills them almost instantly, because this is best both for the meat itself and for retrieving the kill - glad some others mentioned it first :)

i don't hunt, because i don't need to.
it's not as simple as $20 in ammo = freezer full of food. first it's several hundred dollars - or even over a thousand - for a rifle. then it's not just $20 but hundreds of dollars in ammo, spent 'target shooting' to develop skill with your rifle, or you're not likely to hit anything. then it's days and weeks either taken off of work or spent away from your family (how much is your time worth?). and it's another 50-100 dollars to get your deer processed, because most people don't do it themselves. and don't forget the hundreds of dollars in camo clothing, boots, gloves, and other gear. and the 40 thousand dollar truck that gets 10mpg you buy because you "need it" for the 100 yards of gravel road you drive down when you go hunting. and the couple thousand dollars you spend on an atv you "need" to get to that hunting spot. and the trailer for it. and the other rifle because it's better. and the other set of camo for the early in the season before the leaves change. and the licenses. and the freezer you buy hoping to fill it. and the $400 tree stand. and the $30 fingerless gloves. etc. etc.

compare this to the $20 you could spend at a grocery store to buy already-processed beef, chicken or pork. which takes literally 45 seconds of your time because you're already there buying wheaties and orange juice. meat that will spoil and be thrown away if someone doesn't buy it - and a lot of it does end up spoiled and thrown away.

of course i'm exaggerating about some of the expense - but it's undeniably true that a lot of people do go to all that extra expense, and still try to justify their hunting by the 'savings' in the cost of meat. i'm not trying to argue about people who literally do hunt in order to eat, and do provide most of their families food over-winter this way. in some parts of the country, some people live very isolated lives and don't have other viable choices but to garden heavily, can and store food for winter, and supplement it with what they can hunt for. but the vast majority of people in this country, and the vast majority of American "hunters" - really don't have this excuse, and i would feel safe betting that they spend far, far more money on guns, ammunition, clothing, 'accessories' and related extravagance than they 'save' by getting meat this way, not even taking into account the value of the time they spend in this occupation which could be otherwise spent earning a wage and buying some of that food that Americans as a whole let rot and go to waste every year.

i do know people who hunt for subsistence. my own mother and step-father live off-the-grid and grow and hunt for probably 80% of their food, but even they don't depend on hunting to survive; it's a luxury they're sometimes blessed with and they've lived long enough to know it isn't worth putting all the time into it for an uncertain reward, compared with a sure wage from working just a couple hours over that same weekend, and a sure supply of food from a grocer, and they are healthy and content eating vegetables and the occasional livestock they slaughter.

my driveway is not nearly as long as theirs. i don't live in the middle of the mountains. in my opinion i don't have a justifiable reason to go out and kill wild animals. i've been graced to have grown up learning something of it, and if it came to it, i know how to hunt, to sit still for hours, to walk quietly on leaves and twigs, i am no poor shot with a gun or a bow, i know how to clean a carcass, and to cure meat. i'm not against hunting in principle, but i have to admit that i have a certain disgust for the excuses people make and the ridiculous obsession some people develop over it. i would rather they just admit that they have an obsession than try to support all the expense and trouble they go to.

hey -- i'm not talking about everyone who hunts. i appreciate that it is good to spend time in solitude, in the forests, depending on God, and that there's wisdom in developing this kind of knowledge and skill. where i live though, and where i have lived, i've seen a lot of people justifying a lot of ridiculous expense and going overboard with this kind of thing -- imagine using the same arguments to explain why you spent 150 thousand dollars on a boat, an horribly inefficient truck and a trailer to tote it around in . . because you're saving money on food with the 20 little trout per year that you catch. then you've got half of my opinion on this. and the other half is me absolutely hating to see any creature die that doesn't have to.

so i'm not against you if you hunt. i'm against false pretenses.
i'd much sooner hunt than starve. but i won't do it unless i have to; i don't have to in this 1st-world country, and i won't really like it if i ever do face the necessity either.

i hope that all makes sense and doesn't offend anyone who doesn't deserve to be offended, ha! :)

That's a very strange proposition.

Since it's ALREADY LEGAL to hunt and fish with proper licenses, then I would assume this proposition would be a PREEMPTIVE measure to fend off some FEDERAL laws they are expecting to be passed in the future.

Very weird stuff.

DISCLAIMER* I am going to be to the point and not sugar coat things.

I'm a hunter. I hunt because I can be outdoors, It is a feeling of power. If I see an animal, like a deer, I shoot it. I am for either the heart or the head. I drop the animal where they stand. They feel no pain. Animals do not have souls. They do not go to hell. God put animals here on this earth for our pleasure. I do not torture them. If I intend to shot something, I want him/her to feel no pain.

Also, no animal in the United States has EVER been completely eliminated due to recreational hunting.

That was rude. As for this being a Christian Chatroom, we even talk about cats (not that it's wrong), how is it so hard to just let someone ask for help on her research (whatever it is for).

Anyway, Shiloh, sorry for derailing your thread. I'm not a hunter so I'll hop along...
