Where does the word of God declare that the Holy Spirit convicts believers of sin? I understand we can grieve the Holy Spirit and He can enlighten us to those areas, but is that the same thing as conviction? Does He ever condemn us, in convicting us? Or rather, does He convince us of who we are in Christ, the righteousness of God? Is it more along the lines of, "You aren't acting in accordance with who you now are in Jesus Christ (new creations, dead to sin)?" If He does convict, in what way and how, or is that conviction our own conscience and even so, at times the enemy trying to condemn us (being the accuser of the brethren and all)?
These are all things to ponder when answering this question, and I am almost positive someone is going to quote the Holy Spirit convicting of sin, righteousness and judgement not considering that Jesus goes on to explain exactly what He meant. Even so, that is says "convicts the world of sin..." and Jesus says, "because they believe not on Me" which of course, we do believe in Him, so theres that.
You always hear pastors say the Holy Spirit convicts us of sin, even using a verse that cannot apply to believers to make the case. I am just wondering because there are certain things to consider before assuming Holy Spirit convicts us of sin.
First off, the blood of Christ that cleanses us from all unrighteousness. Secondly, He remembers our sins no more. Thirdly, our sins of scarlet are as white as snow, having been washed in His blood. Fourthly, our identity is no longer associated with our sin but in Christ, hence Christ has imputed His righteousness to us and therefore we are saints, we are righteous in Him. So all things being considered, we aren't defined by our sin but by Jesus Christ. So... why would Holy Spirit convicts us of something that we aren't, and wouldn't He much rather put energy towards renewing our minds to who we now are, in Christ?
