Was listening to Rush today. It's been awhile since I've really listened to them. It was evident to me today why I like them so much... and that is because even tho I have heard every song thousands of times they were fresh and new.....maybe even more so in light of the present climate in the world. New World Man hit particularly hard.

Anyway....what do you think man? Is this a thread that only you and I will be interested in...or are there other Rush fans who could chime in? As much as I disagree with Neil Pearts current world view...I think there are so many gems of Biblical wisdom in virtually all of their lyrical content.... and I thought this could be a good thread where we could talk about some of those deep insights into the human psyche that Peart seems to possess.

Peart, if I recall correctly, adopted aspects of his worldview from Ayn Rand. I did a school project on the dude and recall reading something about how The Fountainhead really influenced him. But yeah, in light of some of his perspectives, there's a lot of wisdom in his writing. New World Man is a good jam with a smooth prose. Signals has some of Lee's smoothest bass work, IMO. I like the dichotomy between this and Cinderella Man.

Have you read any of his books? Shame to hear the band is (semi)retiring, eh? (That was my Canadian impression, in case you missed it. Lol.)

P.S - Our drummer buddy zeroturbulence is a big Rush fan. :D

I struggle with aspects of "Territories" but I like aspects of it too. Pearts lyrics challenge you to think unconventionally.

Ive only read the masked rider.
 
Lol I am a Rush fan too. Used to have pretty much all their stuff from the 70s to half of the 80s plus roll the bones and snakes and arrows. Big fan of Neil Peart, not only best drummer in rock n roll, but in my opinion best poet of the elder generations easily. Sold all my cds though, still good stuff though. So hard to pick a favorite song or even album, except for Test for Echo, lol probably the worst album ever made. I like their 70s stuff the best. Lol kinda surprises me your the big Rush fan on here Sirk, I know I've seen you mention them a few times. Good band though either way, lol haven't listened to some Rush for a while.

I think what I struggle with is the notion that we cannot be nationalistic. The current order of things requires us to put locks on our doors. There is evil out there.

What I agree with is that we don't take care of people in the name of profit.

Ya...I think "The Trees" is the best description of what the opposite of self governance looks like. When the people demand a "King"....the trees describes the end result.

Signals is my fave Rush album, and I have read The Fountainhead five times. Five times you say? Yeah, and Atlas Shrugged six. I have only read We The Living four times. More's the pity, eh? Hey, you maybe would not believe how hard I worked to get that out of my vocabulary as a young adult new to the wet west coast. Apparently it was more prevalent in the east :p
 
I was in college in the early seventies and Rush was sometimes playing at some local bar... I don't think I ever saw them, though remember being invited. I was not really fond of them until twenty years later, when I saw some guy in a bar doing Limelight karaoke style but without any lyrics to follow; I was mightily impressed. I did a lot of karaoke in those days :rolleyes:

Lol the Trees never demanded a king though. The Oaks demanded freedom and the Maples equality. The Oaks ignore their pleas and the Maples are jealous of the oaks being tall. So the Maples form a union and create their little constitution, and all the trees are kept equal, by hatchet, axe, and saw. Lol gotta remember Rush is super liberal, that's a fantasy about destroying the upper class and the conservatives lol.

When you said your first rush album was hemispheres I was like finally someone who's been a fan longer than me! Then I noticed your age. :rolleyes: It's all good though! :D

Oh wow. The Fountainhead and Anthem are the only Rand books I've read. A 700-ish page book five times, and another one six times... :eek:

Did you like them? Atlas Shrugged is over 1k pages ;) 645,000 words, (estimate by the publisher and by The New York Times and by the author herself quoting printer's word count), it makes the longest novels list LOL. It seems to be 15th on the list. I just watched The Fountainhead movie this week. Of course it does not hold a candle to the novel. I read Anthem in high school, maybe grade nine. I have probably read Pride and Prejudice (by Jane Austen) at least five times also. :D
