Because of something that happened here in my congregation, I feel compelled to ask how many people on CC have watched Mel Gibson's "The Passion of Christ"... all the way through.

I did too, and to be honest it was what really attracted me to Him in a strange way. I didn't know very much about the whole story at all before I saw this, an example is I had no idea the one of His followers (Judas) betrayed Him to the Romans, and after seeing this and thinking about it a bit I came to the conclusion that Jesus was defiantly worth looking into much more closely. It was about 5-6 years later before I was truly regenerated, but I have to say this was a big part of putting me on that track (along with MANY other factors, but it did play a part).

I'm anxious to talk of what happened at our church, but I am waiting, in hopes of getting a lot more of a general consensus of the movie.

I saw this movie in the theater and thought it was excellent in depicting the emotions of that time period of those who witnessed it. I was always taught by Christ's crucifixion that he forgave the sins I haven't even committed yet, but after seeing this it made me see what Christ went through because he loves us so much. Now, I realize that what Christ actually went through was so much more than what was depicted in the Passion, but at least it gave us a glimpse of it. I wouldn't see this movie again because once is enough because of the content and I couldn't stop crying throughout a good majority of the film.

I watched it in the theater more than once. Of course Gibson is a strong Catholic, so the movie reflected his beliefs. But I think Jim Caviezel did an excellent job in portraying Christ. It certainly was moving and I think the most realistic movie on the Crucifixion.

The catholic thing is what I didn't like about the movie.

Could I ask what it was you didn't care for? If anything more than just the Catholic angle? (Because this is one of the subjects that came up in our congregation... negative impressions of other facets of the film.)

I think it really depicted the Jews in a bad way. It showed Gibson's almost hatred toward them. It put a lot of emphasis on the female interaction during and before the Crucifixion, which was an element of the catholic twist. I didn't care for it being in Latin, Aramaic and Hebrew. Would have been nice that it was in English :).

It also almost made Jesus look weaker than the scriptures portray Him as.

The reason I don't want to watch it is that I only want the Holy Spirit to give me "visuals" the way he wants me to see the death of Christ. I have an active imagination (which he uses). And I don't want to actually see a face. I prefer to not have it very clear in my mind. Sometimes the Holy Spirit gives me a picture of his eyes - sometimes of his smile - very rarely the entire face at one time.

If I watched the movie, that face would be in my mind for a long time probably. Instead of a face now, I just see tears, I see pain, I see nails, I see blood, I even hear (spiritually) what he is saying to me. Much better than a movie.

Letting myself be there with the Holy Spirit I saw his blood run down to the dirt - always to remain here. I heard his labored breathing, saw the glory upon him when he said "It is finished".

The way the Holy Spirit wanted me to see it.

This is intriguing... and totally the opposite of the reasons some people in my congregation seemed to give for their feelings. I like what you said.

My heart cannot bare to see Christ brutalized!

Aside from that...
Then I looked at Mel Gibsons credibility. ...

I've seen it a number of times and I quite enjoyed it. Some people say it portrays Jesus as being weak but I've always seen it as Him being strong. H

Aww, C'mon, Kayla. :)
Those scenes where they mocked and beat Him were brutal and over the top.
Yes, it was an awful moment. Personally, I don't need to see horrible visuals in movies to know that it is part of the event. One can imply what took place.

The NT is about WHY He went to the cross....not the actual events during the walk.

If one needs a visual of Jim Caviezel being tortured via CGI, a movie, to remind them of what Christ did for us....what He went through...and to be convinced that the BIble is the truth.....?

......the state of Christianity is in a lot more trouble than we are willing to truly admit.

Mel Gibson is Hollywood, and Hollywood is corrupt, in every way. He's a Catholic, and his approach to the story is from that point of view. Even if The Passion has 15 mins of great storytelling, I don't need Mad Max to remind me of how incredible the last few hours of Christ's life was...........so why even watch the any of it?

Sorry, Willie, Kayla.......that movie was awful. Just because it's about Christ, doesn't mean it's good. Have you seen Noah?

I did. Two hours of life I'll never get back.
