New American Standard Bible
When the scribes of the Pharisees saw that He was eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they said to His disciples, "Why is He eating and drinking with tax collectors and sinners?"
New American Standard Bible
Both the Pharisees and the scribes began to grumble, saying, "This man receives sinners and eats with them."
We need to understand that in Corinth, many believers were influenced by the phallic cult. In their(phallic cult) worship services, they used sex,Idols, booze, foods sacrificed to Idols.
Many believers were being influenced by this evil, so they were being encouraged to disassociate socially (as in friendships) with some.
Some of us can handle going into a bar for a drink and visiting with friends and not sin and be influenced by the evil that MAY be there, some of us can't.
Some of us can handle having a big box of chocolates and not indulge to the point of gluttony, some of us can't.
If a person is pushing their chocolate products on us and we can't handle the chocolate...........we disassociate from them.
We are not called to be hermits, we are called to discern. If something causes us to fall into sin or evil.......we leave.
The humor of God........a grace believer is having a beer and watching football and the legalistic believer rebukes him and disassociates from the grace believer. God protects the Grace believer from the evil of the legalistic believer.
Thank you for opening my eyes. The answer to Pauls rebuke is these people were truly pagans, so it does not apply.
But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who
claims to be a brother or sister but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people.
1 Cor 5:11
But look at the passage. Claims to be a brother or sister.
So look at the list provided
Sexually immoral, greedy, idolater, slanderer, drunkard, swindler.
Now none of these things would I expect in believers. In fact to defend such behaviour is to say Paul was wrong.
Now we were talking about standards some time ago. This defence is saying christian acceptable behaviour is below most socially moral people, and is the garbage of the world and should be thrown out. If this is what hyper-grace is I agree with them.
This standard is so far below perfect, for believers who claim perfect is Gods standard, they are truly in and of the world and slaves to sin.
