It's funny. Obama has been a devout Christian his entire life and probably knows more about the bible than the people who call him a Muslim. People question his salvation based solely on the fact his FORMER preacher is a radical bigot who mixes religion with politics. Big deal. I have realy met a preacher who hasnt been known to make a controversial statement. I once knew a preacher who called for the execution of homosexual and favored bombing abortion clinics.

I understand but if as Christians we can not use grace and compassion and tolerance with each other, then what does that say about us? And it takes away from the issue at hand.

Look at your posts, would you be embaressed if Jesus were reading over your shoulder? And I am not trying to be preachy. Thankfully, my big failing is pride not anger. So its easier for me to be temperate in my responses.

He, quite rightly, asked the audience which passage of scripture could be used when governing a multi-cultural and multi-religious country.
I suggest you study the seperation of Church and State which is enshrined in your constitution.

Was reading this discussion...Honestly I don't really like Obama, I didn't like Bush too much either. I have my reasons. But this one statement caught my minds alert system.

I'm in my second semester in seminary and I remember one of my lectures last semester was sharing how the seperation of church and state is in-fact not constitutional. The passage people use so often to prove it constitutional is taken out of its original context and thus is not correct.

Sorry I would love to give you the research to back up my statement, I just don't have it with me right now. But whatever the case, the church and the state were not intended to be seperated. What he meant in his statement was the state should not interfere with the church and its practices rather than the church in the states. Yet again, I don't have the resources with me at the moment to show that but it is there.

You know I saw a documentary here in the UK last year a good time ahead of our soon to arrive General Election and it was fronted by a young actress, 16 yrs old who was very well educated for her age and was interested in politics and so was very frustrated she would not be eligible to vote for the next government but instead have it chosen for her.

I watched the programme because regardless of my views and personal belief that 16 year olds should not be allowed to vote, I thought it was great someone her age was taking a genuine interest in the political situation.

She visited sitting MP's and other people to gauge public opinion on the issue and the feelings of her age group, she proved beyond doubt that 16 year olds were no different than my age group or any other, many would not vote, but many others would and they were capable of understaning and voting responsibly given the necessary support.

Here's where it all went wrong, there was a political scandal at the time where the majority of sitting MP's had been exposed as having seriously abused the expenses system, people claiming money running into the thousands for things they should have paid for themselves.

The young girl made a flasher jacket with various items that had been claimed by these corrupt MP's and went around the streets talking to MP's about the topic and then flashing them and basically embarassing them before the passing public and bringing a swift end to what had been a serious discussion.

She was simultaneously giving these MP's affirmation of the view that 16 year olds are not mature enough to vote, she failed to realise that these MP's are the one who will ultimately decide if 16 year olds ever do get the right to vote.

The moral of the story is........believe whatever you like about Obama and any other politician...but behave with maturity if you wish to be taken seriously........so get rid of the satirical avatars and leave the jokes to Jay Leno.......if you don't wish to be percieved as a child...DO NOT ACT LIKE ONE!

However, I would grant you that it could be interpreted in the manner in which you state. However, no country is a purely Christian state and for it to be interpreted in such a way is not only somewhat secular, but almost immoral.

You're exactly right, sorry I conveyed my meaning wrong on that area. I didn't mean to say the church was supposed to have the say in the government, I only meant to say the part about the government having no part of the church. I'd really have to dig up my books and find the sources and all.
