Help with Job

Hi all,

We recently covered Job at Bible School and it has confused me especially v2:3

ESV
And the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil? He still holds fast his integrity, although you incited me against him to destroy him without reason.”

The bit that has really got me a pickle is that it says '...the Lord said to Satan...although you incited me against him to destroy him without reason.' which leads me to believe that it was God who killed all of Job's livestock and children.

I have looked at other translations but they all to me say basically the same thing that God got incited by Satan to destroy Job.

Help me out please, I am quite a new Christian and I am finding it hard to see the OT God as the same God who is in the NT.

My version NLT, says "...even though you urged me to harm him without cause."

I think it helps to see how Jesus said to the disciple, Satan has asked permission to sift you like wheat.

Satan has to ask permission to do this and you know that if God allows it, it will be worked for our good.

I also think you have to read in the beginning where God says, alright, you may test Him, and more importantly, what Job said in the end - before I had only heard of God but now I have MET him!!
 
The thing that needs to be seen here is that satan can do nothing without the Father allowing it, so He was saying He actually did it by removing His hedge of protection from Job and his family, He knew Job could endure all of what would come upon him, and the Father loved Job way too much not to address the one thing Job had in His character that needed correction, if you read the last few chapters of Job you will understand it was pride. also 1 cor. 10:11, the Father knows what each of us need in our lives to effect proper sanctification, and is not willing that any should parish, so those who will yield their lives to His will, will endure trials to prefect their character, you see for some this world is all the hell they will ever know, and for others this world is all the heaven they will ever know.

First, I would NOT suggest a study of JOB for a new Christian. This is a book full of meat, and can be difficult for even mature Christians.

It's vital to understand that God sees through the lens of eternity. It is FAR more important to bring people to eternal life than for them to have ease and comfort in this life, and NO tragedy. I don't pretend to understand the motives or mind of the Lord, but I KNOW He has our best interests at heart, and Job is now permanently with the Lord AND his temporarily lost family. Further, Job has the honor of being a model to Love and Trust the Lord in plenty and in famine.

I will go with PennEd on this one. Job was a mature believer and went through/ was allowed to go through evidence testing of His faith. There is no punishment of Job in this book, or suffering because He deserved it.

He was a witness For Christ in the test of undeserved suffering and Job passed the test and glorified the Lord.

He had the privilege to put another nail in Satans coffin.
 
Thanks for your answers, I did find a commentary online that helped me a lot. I also spoke again with my lecturer and got the issue clarifed.

Here, only because I said I would repost this here. Sorry for the repeat. ---> Welcome! Saw your post about Job. Got hit with that when I was 'new' (the first time), and it sent me spinning. Still don't know if it was God testing me, or the enemy trying to throw me off, but I'm ashamed to say I didn't respond too well. It's been a long rough path, and I still don't walk it too well. I should have put this in the other thread, which I will. Anyway, welcome. Pm anytime. <---
