Alternatives to Google

So.... just because I am stubborn, I don't want to accept the google terms that appear as soon as I open google or youtube.
(Why should I agree that they can spy on anything I type? One thing is them doing so anywyay, but why agree? :p )

That leaves me with a problem:

- I need a good browser
Yahoo simply isn't as good, I use gogoduck to, but nothing so far quite matches google)
- I need an alternative to Youtube.
I tried Dailymotion, but it is incredibly slow and glitchy, and has less christian videos. Is Vimeo better? (I can't bother to register unless it's good)

If I do surrender and agree to google, can I in any way control it? or can they store whatever they want as long as they want?
 
Well, chances are, all of these sites (not browsers) are storing stuff. Nearly every website you go on will track you through cookies, and if you refuse cookies they'll often refuse to let you on the site.
Fact is, Google is the biggest. People even use it in day to day language anymore, "i don't know the answer, i know, i'll google it". And since they and Microsoft own everything, there is nothing that is comparable that will grant you privacy.
This is the issue with companies getting big online. They get greedy. They become intrusive. Look at Windows 10. If you want all the good stuff it comes with you have to give up all privacy to use them.

Most likely other sites will have lesser results, lesser quality. Because they don't have the funding and support that google does. And those companies, like google once was, that come in and do better than the big guys, are few and far between. Usually it's seen as the backlash of the bigger guys getting lazy because they feel no one can compete. Google and YT are headed that way. Google is getting too invasive. YT is getting worse with more lag, lower volume levels, etc... But i still suspect it will be years before any companies rise up to be a real competition. Maybe those companies are starting to form now.
But as far as the internet goes, no one will have the level of choices that google and YT will provide.

At least that's how i see things. I'm not up on everything out there, i'm just going off of what i remember of the history of things and what makes sense in the way people behave.
 
Don't have a gmail account is number one or any type of email account signed in while browsing....that will limit you being snooped on...

Try yandex browser...it is based off chrome but uses russian search engine yandex and the browser is opera based....very fast I really like it...

I forgot to mention use CCleaner....to get rid of cookies so youtube and google can't store your search history etc....

Use the Opera browser. You can customize and even use your own pictures for wallpaper. I use DuckDuckGo for a search engine. It doesn't track you. Or you can use StartPage..
 
Yes download ccleaner. I have it and it's awesome. Google is all about tracking you and getting your info. Switch to outlook.com for your email.
 
wow, that is what happens when you multitask :p I meant search engine, not browser :p

Alternative browser? Firefox

Alternative youtube? Liveleak.com

Also, use a proxy :)

What about the terms and conditions don't you like, specifically?

I've learned to like DuckDuckGo. It took awhile, and Google is still a more efficient search engine, but I've settled and adapted. If you want better security and/or privacy, you can check out the collection of extensions Firefox has, or look into Tor. VPNs are cool too.

Actually until recently most of mozilla's development was funded by Google

I've read that up to 85% of Google's royalties are paid to firefox to use google as the default search engine. While I know they are funding the Firefox OS, they have funded development of firefox in the past decade or so.... just fyi..... :)
 
Yup, just personally I would not do browsers with the so called "syncing" like firefox and chrome between phones and computers...just another way to data mine your bookmarks passwords etc...it's like choosing the least of all evils....I would go with something like opera/yandex....they seem less intrusive but who really knows? Best of luck!
 
I am using FF at the moment, but I never use synchronization, I didn't eve know it was possible :p
 
Yea I use FF for video downloading and things but stopped using it recently a few weeks ago because it was too slow/cpu intensive. It eats like 35% cpu power in linux and in windows....mostly because it has a lot of java junk in it to load all the webpages. I'm happy now with yandex, which is a basic browser with more stripped down java...and youtube videos load so much faster and reliably now! It's awesome, plus since it is opera based it refreshes the page every 9 seconds (at least that was the old settings back in the day I don't know now but it still does the auto-refresh which is nice when webpages crash it reloads it without clicking refresh! The best part is Yandex is a russian search engine so no google involved...yay!
 
Now that I already have everyone's attention: What antivirus should I get when my northon subscription runs out?
It is good at fighting viruses and trackers, but it takes all my CPU power :(
