Is saying "omg" using God's name in vain?

Leviticus 22:32 Do not profane my holy name, for I must be acknowledged as holy by the Israelites. I am the Lord, who made you holy

Leviticus 21:6 They must be holy to their God and must not profane the name of their God. Because they present the food offerings to the Lord, the food of their God, they are to be holy.

Using the Lords name in vain is basically saying, "The Lord said!!"...when He didn't. Using His name to back something YOU have said up, which He did not speak. Or, putting words in Gods mouth.

Jeremiah 27:14 Do not listen to the words of the prophets who say to you, 'You will not serve the king of Babylon,' for they are prophesying lies to you. 15 I have not sent them,' declares the LORD. 'They are prophesying lies in my name. Therefore, I will banish you and you will perish, both you and the prophets who prophesy to you.'"

Jeremiah 14:14Then the Lord said to me, “The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I have not sent them or appointed them or spoken to them. They are prophesying to you false visions, divinations, idolatries[SUP]a[/SUP] and the delusions of their own minds. 15Therefore this is what the Lord says about the prophets who are prophesying in my name: I did not send them, yet they are saying, ‘No sword or famine will touch this land.’ Those same prophets will perish by sword and famine.

Ezekiel 13:6 Their visions are false and their divinations a lie. Even though the LORD has not sent them, they say, "The LORD declares," and expect him to fulfill their words.

In situations like this ..I always refer to this scripture below and then to be open to listen to the Holy Spirit within us. ( some things originate from our church upbringing and what they taught too so that may vary with people )

Romans 14:22 (NASB)
[SUP]22 [/SUP] The faith which you have, have as your own conviction before God. Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves.

God's Name is YHVH. Don't think anyone takes that in vain. Tell her to call Him Yeshua HaMaschiach. It's impossible to use that Name in vain.

Jesus is God and His name in English is Jesus.

In answer to the OP's question: In short, yes, it is using God's name in vain. OMG means "Oh, my God", and unless you are saying that as a prayer, you are saying it in vain. Also, saying Jesus' name as an exclamation is taking His name in vain. It would be different if one was saying it as a prayer, i.e. calling on Jesus for help in a certain situation.

The key, blue_ladybug, as you pointed out, is what you heard afterwards...

How often do you hear people add the pleas for help, etc. at the end, as your example suggests? Actually, let me rephrase that question: how often do you hear it with pleas, etc. compared to how frequently you hear it as a vain exclamation?

More often, the expression is followed by something more like, "no way!" or "I can't believe it". Probably most often the phrase is followed by nothing at all.

So, to say the word "god"... is always speaking of or to God, no it is not.

This fleshly minded "offense", is just that... a false sense of piety.

Oooh, just seeing this. Great, I have mentioned wanting to start a topic on biblical profanity a couple times since I joined this site, myself. But, I never got around to it and it would not be about "cussing" words. Please let me know of your thread.

People aren't saying, "Oh a god".

The thread is addressing the use of "Oh, my God".

The thread is also addressing the use of vain usage of "Jesus".

She doesn't need to stop doing what you call filthy language...she needs to hear the gospel of the grace of Christ. People that don't know the Lord are going to do what comes naturally. They are supposed to....it's their nature.

Show your unsaved family members the love of Christ in you and forget their behavior. When they come to Christ....The Holy Spirit will direct their lives and it will be the fruit of His life in them that will show an exchanged life.

We don't clean the fish while they are in the water and not even caught yet. Jesus said to get the inside clean first and then the outside will follow.

I'm going to try to be a little more gentle when I reply to outrageous posts. Let's see how successful I can be.
Sin is not your nature, nor is it what one does naturally. We are unlike all animals and you shouldn't make it seem as tho God made no differentiation between them and us.
Adam nor Eve had to get saved to stop sinning. They had to learn to sin.
We are born with a sin nature because of Adam and Eve, but that doesn't mean we will always and must, sin unless we are saved. We must learn to sin.
Sin is a choice, not an instinct. You can't sin accidentally. You must make a choice, the wrong choice.
To make such a statement as you have, you reveal that you yourself need to learn more. I would exhort you to study the bible. If you study it every day, regardless of how old you are, you'll never learn it all, so there is no danger of too much or saturation.
Please give doctrine more thought so that you may post stuff that isn't just outright false. Thanks.

Phil...these people are not Christians and it is not our job to "clean" them up to try and make them act like a Christian. It is not our job to "make them act like us"....that's a bunch of religious nonsense...it's our job to preach the good news of the grace of Christ to them.

Paul when he went to a city , he didn't say to them..."don't sin...and everyone should act like me.."...NO...he preached the gospel of the grace of Christ to them.

When they come to Christ..the Holy Spirit will reveal the true life that is in them now and the exchanged life will be seen outwardly in their behavior.

You can try to turn people into being religious if you want but it's not the gospel...it's just behavior modification. The Christian that has received Christ has an exchanged life...big difference!

Oh, I see. So, the "my" constitutes something to certain minds, not so much the word "god" then, is that what you mean? And, if so, then, this offense only applies to our God, as Christians, when said by Christians?

This still has nothing to do with the doctrine of "taking the Lord's name in vain", though.

Although, this one "oh my word" I hear from a lot of Baptists, what's up with that?

There is "Oh my word, or oh my Jesus and Oh my God, and Oh my Lord and oh my goodness are all used.

His name is called the word of God, oh my word is another one no?

I have christian friends who sometimes use "Jesus" as an expletive,I would rather just go ahead ans cuss than to use Jesus name in this manor
