I mostly do too, only because I know omg offends some people, true story.
So if it didn't offend anyone you would say it?
"oh my god" would be okay to say if you didn't mean THE God?
As a believer you think God doesn't mind you swearing on other gods as long as it isn't HIM?
Altho believers know there is only one true God, and God has told us He is the only one, you're have told yourself that it's okay for you to acknowledge other gods and use their name in vain?
My friends, so many of us surely need to get in the bible, read it, and live it. It gives us knowledge on how to attain eternal life. It is meant for us to take seriously, to our hearts, to live it and guard it with our very lives.
It is very unwise to take it lightly, to be facetious about it's commands.
Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

I wasn't going to say something but this is so bad I had to.

How can you say Jesus using his own words (scripture) when crying out to his Father in fulfilment of the redemptive promise to be the same as someone using 'oh my god' ? they are not saying in it in relation to bringing glory to the Father..
Jesus is God plus he said My God with Reason not by habit or suprise
What a terrible example.
So you all think that anyone who says "My God" is committing a horrible sin? Or is it the "Oh" that you have a problem with? Either way, I respectfully disagree. I've said My God, my Father, & my Lord many times, and I don't believe it was in vain, disrespectful, or a sin.. I used the example of Christ to demonstrate that not everyone who says "My God" is breaking the commandment. Sorry for any offense, sometimes I find it difficult to be religiously correct. :)

Nice post, the doctrine is "taking" the Lord's name in vain, not "using" it in vain, right?

[SUP]7 [/SUP]Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

You posted the words that came to mind 7. .... for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh His name in vain.

On the one hand, these are unsaved people who are doing what unsaved people do. (what many of us did) We can't try and bring conviction on people to change their behavior on the outside. They are the same on the inside. As the old saying goes, you can't clean the fish until you catch em. So it would seem a foolish thing to try and do.

But just a side note., have you noticed how even on TV (where nothing is sacred), when the commentators are speaking, many say "oh my gosh" and on purpose do not use the name "God" That is very interesting how they even stop themselves from saying "Oh my God"., and apologize if they let it slip. Then they say Oh my gosh or oh my goodness.

There ARE those on TV and everywhere who do say God's name with total abandonment not caring at all.
I have wondered what the Lord meant when He said He will not hold them guiltless...since they won't be held guiltless if they die and have rejected Jesus that being the only unpardonable sin.

You know what I think, to say "God gave me a word" or "God put this on my heart" or "God told me", is something way worse than saying omg. How about you, what do you think when someone attaches their thought to being from God or of God?

I imagine if a believer was given a word from God or God lead them to do something or God spoke to their hearts I don't see that to be a bad thing at all to share with their brothers and sisters in Christ. In fact, we should feel ok about sharing some of those things. We should all have more words from the Lord and more of us should be lead to do this or that from the Lord.

But if someone says "the Lord told me to tell YOU to do this and that" it's a different story.

I don't know if using "Oh my God" is a bad thing, but I know that since i got saved, I have been doing much better about changing my expletives into softer terms. Oh my God became Oh my goodness or a simple wow. I used to say "Jesus Christ" all the time as a token of surprise or dismay but I don't do it hardly at all anymore. I'm becoming a changed being in Christ and that's a good thing.

I still drop an F bomb from time to time, but the Lord is patient with me and eventually, those will disappear too I think.

Amen Shpadoinkle., for someone who is a new Christian you sound like you have a good grasp of the love of Jesus., and how He gives us grace to grow. Keep up the good work brother!!! Welcome to CC too!!!

She doesn't need to stop doing what you call filthy language...she needs to hear the gospel of the grace of Christ. People that don't know the Lord are going to do what comes naturally. They are supposed to....it's their nature.

Show your unsaved family members the love of Christ in you and forget their behavior. When they come to Christ....The Holy Spirit will direct their lives and it will be the fruit of His life in them that will show an exchanged life.

We don't clean the fish while they are in the water and not even caught yet. Jesus said to get the inside clean first and then the outside will follow.

LOL you must be my long lost brother who got shipped to Canada when we were babies!!!! LOL, God bless you Grace777. Posted the same kind of answer before reading the later posts. HONEST INJIN!!! The cleaning the fish before catching them is a good word picture I have never forgotten.

I'm going to try to be a little more gentle when I reply to outrageous posts. Let's see how successful I can be.
Sin is not your nature, nor is it what one does naturally. We are unlike all animals and you shouldn't make it seem as tho God made no differentiation between them and us.
Adam nor Eve had to get saved to stop sinning. They had to learn to sin.
We are born with a sin nature because of Adam and Eve, but that doesn't mean we will always and must, sin unless we are saved. We must learn to sin.
Sin is a choice, not an instinct. You can't sin accidentally. You must make a choice, the wrong choice.
To make such a statement as you have, you reveal that you yourself need to learn more. I would exhort you to study the bible. If you study it every day, regardless of how old you are, you'll never learn it all, so there is no danger of too much or saturation.
Please give doctrine more thought so that you may post stuff that isn't just outright false. Thanks.

Where is that picture of the guy who is sitting down with his hands on his head ??? This would be a good place for him to sit.

Phil...these people are not Christians and it is not our job to "clean" them up to try and make them act like a Christian. It is not our job to "make them act like us"....that's a bunch of religious nonsense...it's our job to preach the good news of the grace of Christ to them.

Paul when he went to a city , he didn't say to them..."don't sin...and everyone should act like me.."...NO...he preached the gospel of the grace of Christ to them.

When they come to Christ..the Holy Spirit will reveal the true life that is in them now and the exchanged life will be seen outwardly in their behavior.

You can try to turn people into being religious if you want but it's not the gospel...it's just behavior modification. The Christian that has received Christ has an exchanged life...big difference!

Amen to those wise words Brother! The good news is God so loved the world He sent His only Son ..that is a lot of love. Amen.

Exo 20:7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
Read the command and be accountable to God.
Over time as i have come closer to Christ i have become concious of things that needed to change, (growing in His Grace).
We are all at different stages in our walks and what is sin to one person may not be sin to another person, all we can do is pray for each other and God will show us what is sin when we are able to hear. If we don't listen we don't grow. Read the verse above and Listen to the Spirit.

There was a guy who said Jesus all the time. But I'm talking to Him he said. Just because people used His Name as a curse word doesn't mean we have to call Him otherwise, although I heard it so much, I'm inclined to call Him Yeshua.
As if noone can say: ooh my Lord! and just mean it. Even Jesus said My God My God.

I have used the term, but I chide myself for it. It is silly to bring our Father up on whims or just to show surprise.

If a person wants to truly call on Him, call on Him, but not in frivolity... we are not imbued with that authority. If you are, go ahead.
How would people like it if their names were used in such a manner?

This is one of the Ten Commandments; it is good to see people consider what our Father likes.

Using the Lords name in vain is basically saying, "The Lord said!!"...when He didn't. Using His name to back something YOU have said up, which He did not speak. Or, putting words in Gods mouth.

Jeremiah 27:14 Do not listen to the words of the prophets who say to you, 'You will not serve the king of Babylon,' for they are prophesying lies to you. 15
I have not sent them,' declares the LORD. 'They are prophesying lies in my name. Therefore, I will banish you and you will perish, both you and the prophets who prophesy to you.'"

Jeremiah 14:14Then the Lord said to me, “The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I have not sent them or appointed them or spoken to them. They are prophesying to you false visions, divinations, idolatries[SUP]a[/SUP] and the delusions of their own minds. 15Therefore this is what the Lord says about the prophets who are prophesying in my name: I did not send them, yet they are saying, ‘No sword or famine will touch this land.’ Those same prophets will perish by sword and famine.

Ezekiel 13:6 Their visions are false and their divinations a lie. Even though the LORD has not sent them, they say, "The LORD declares," and expect him to fulfill their words.

Wooow.. I didn't know that. I need more careful...

you should go to the bible first not the dictionary in this case its wrong and youre agreeing with it cause its justifying your sin. Look up "Hell" "Hades" in the bible or concordance it will say its the place of the dead . Is that funny?
I lost a friend to suicide she planned it and I know shes in Hell I know shes in Hell - I dont take this lightly.
You ignorance is insulting and hurtful im sorry if thats difficult to hear please be careful what you say because you have hurt me and others. And Im sorry if I hurt you by saying this.
