Stop drugging ADHD kids — and start teaching them to use their gifts

By Peter Shankman

May 11, 2016 | 8:45pm

This year, Americans will spend more than $8 billion on members of the stimulant family, in a desperate attempt to keep squirmy school kids with ADHD glued to their chairs — or sometimes, even their kindergarten rugs.
But what if, in an effort to get kids to behave like 55-year-old men, parents and teachers are actually drugging the creativity out of our next generation of leaders?
As a New York City public-school kid who grew up with obvious, but at the time undiagnosed, attention issues, I attribute my success to the fact that I was always too fast, too off the beaten track, too squirmy.
I wasn’t put on medication to “make me like everyone else,” and I consider myself ridiculously fortunate to have had teachers at LaGuardia High School of Music and Performing Arts who recognized my creativity and encouraged me to run with it, instead of convincing my parents to shove a pill down my throat to calm me down.
Fast-forward to today, and I’m a best-selling author, an entrepreneur who’s started and successfully sold three companies and a corporate keynote speaker to companies around the world on customer service and the consumer economy. I know a little bit about keeping people’s attention.
I’m also diagnosed ADHD for over 15 years, and it’s because of my ADHD, not in spite of it, that I’m as successful as I am today.
When I got into the real world, I discovered that my creativity and unbounded energy didn’t fit into a traditional corporate environment, so I went out on my own as an entrepreneur — and it was the best decision I ever made.
According to a recent study, students with ADHD are 2.7 times more likely to have dropped out of school before high-school graduation. Yet the No. 1 way to lower dropout rates is to introduce students to something they’re passionate about — whether it’s sports, music or any subject. The answer isn’t “throw them on meds and hope for the best.”
It’s time to stop looking at ADHD as a negative, and start understanding the positives and incredible benefits of being gifted with a brain that runs a thousand times faster than normal. Teachers need to understand that a student with a faster brain doesn’t automatically equate to “difficult to teach,” but rather, that much more interested and able to learn, if the information is presented in a way that reaches that student.
“Copy down, learn, get tested and forget” isn’t the way to grab the attention of an ADHD student, and often results in what’s perceived as negative behavior, when in fact, it’s a cry for help. ADHD children want to learn, they’re many times more curious and exploratory, but they need to be allowed to take in the information in a different way.
This extends to the workforce, as well. Companies waste billions of dollars each year by firing employees who don’t fit the “standard” mold, when in fact, if given the chance, these employees could be their best workers and corporate ambassadors.
Those with ADHD need a special kind of structure that doesn’t come from being treated like everyone else. The small changes that an employer makes for an ADHD employee could pay the company back 100 times in revenue, if the company’s management just understood how to best manage those employees.
The time is now to address the over-medicating and misunderstanding of our next generation of leaders. Instead of giving them a pill, let’s give them an hour to run around outside. Instead of telling them they need to conform, explain to them that their differences are their greatest gifts.
Do this, and we’ll be giving our children a gift that will benefit all of us for generations to come.

as with any other condition, it can be individual.
We should always be cautious when considering prescribing meds, BUT

I was out of control before I got my meds. ON my meds I could pay attention in school. I was still.... eh .... a tad crazy.... but I could focus on what was being said :) Once I got older and got control of myself, they took me off them.

My then 7 year old son was diagnosed with add. The drug turned him into a zombie. After three weeks I could not deal with it anymore. I was in tears. I want my son back, ADD or not. Took him off it and changed his diet and gave him the amino acid Gaba.
It is individual, but I will never stop saying it, because it is the truth: this country is over medicated. Over prescribed. Some people need their meds, a lot don't. They need to change their life style and maybe take some natural elements.
Ask me, in many cases its a deal with the devil.
The side effects are not worth the "cure' in some cases.

if he was turned into a zombie he was either given a wrong dose or the wrong drug
Ritalin, most commonly used (well, at least back when i was a kid), is actually speed. It just affects ADD people differently

It was Ritalin. It was in the late '80's. And yes, same time period, he would be about your age by now, at twenty nine and 30 later this year

Hmm. Sad to hear it did that to him :( It really helped me (Even though I still tried by best to kill the bullies before I learned to ignore them :p )

I heard and read similar rxns. A naturopath whose child recovered from adhd (also was a zombie after 30 min taking Ritalin) recommends fixing nutritional deficiencies first, and having discipline in making the effort to put in these. Otherwise, efforts may be useless when not followed thru religiously: omega 3s, probiotics, acv.. and removing artificial colours, flavor enhancers, preservatives, refined and processed sugars at all cost.

'An in depth study in 2007 by the University of Southampton, and published in the prestigious Lancet Medical Journal, found that hyperactive behavior increased in children when they consumed two different mixtures of artificial colours and a preservative. As a result of the study, the British Food Standards Agency advised parents to reduce or eliminate six particular food colourings from their child’s diet. Then a committee of the European Parliament went even further and actually banned all synthetic dyes used in baby foods and other foods consumed by small children.'

Probably the biggest factor in kids is their diet. Red dye, sugar etc.

I don't believe ADHD exists for a myriad of reasons, but Matt Walsh says it best here. There are many medical scientists and doctors that have proven ADHD doesn't exist. Two of my nephews have spent most of their lives on drugs because their mothers insisted they had ADHD. My brother has worked very hard to get them off of the drugs.

This is smart. It is almost always diet. After all, we start them on Cheerios (Just about pure SUGAR in a circle... Why do you suppose EVERY baby just loves them?) when they are infants, and then we load them up with more sugar during their formative years. What do we expect but to have a wired sugar junkie.

It's interesting that my son doesn't even crave sweets. Sure we have the occasional twizzler or what ever but he was fed a good diet from the time he was born. He breast fed til he was 2. The kid is the most attentive kid I know and head and shoulders above his peers. Never a problem in school or at home. He even does what you ask the first time.

We did a experiment at the culinary institute in Manhattan years ago. We took a cereal, and ground it up. Then we took a strong magnet and ran it through the ground cereal. It picked up pieces of metals that were visible to the eyes. This was what the food companies classify as the minerals they fortify the food with. Obviously it is not digestible, so it is useless as a mineral fortification, not to mention it is putting a harmful material in the body which over time can cause neurological diseases, and of course is harsh on the digestion and elimination process. That's our wonderful FDA for us.

if there is no such thing it's interesting that Ritalin worked on me before I was old enough to know about drugs (couldn't be a placebo effect)

Strange how many people nowdays that make claims about medicine and science whether or not their education has anything to do with it

Even before I clicked on this thread to read it, I had already planned ( just from reading the title ) to say this:

"Want to know what is even worse? -- giving drugs to kids that do not have ADHD!"

mystdancer50's story is a proliferate reality. There are so many cases of it, it is not funny...

Astrid:

One of the greatest fallacies that has ever been in existance -- is the one that says that no-one-but-an-'expert' is able or has any right to "speak to" a particular subject that is in some way related to their field-of-expertise.

Most of the work that I have done in a "field of expertise" -- that is my "field of expertise" -- has involved things electrical and electronic, and computer hardware and software. However, I have also managed to learn - "along the way" - things having to do with:

~ Drafting

I will admit that I did take drafting 'elective' courses while in high school. However, I do not consider that it made me an 'expert'.

~ Carpentry

I once helped a carpenter build a 20x20 foot addition onto a house - from the ground up! ( I learned a lot from him about building houses. )

I have done [ shingle ] roofing.

I have also done other "odds-and-ends" things with wood / framing / etc.

~ Plumbing

I have done a variety of "jobs" with PVC pipe ( some with galvanized metal pipe, but mostly with PVC pipe ), repair of water leaks in metal and plastic pipe, fittings, fixtures, etc. ( "common around-the-house stuff" )

~ Welding

"Not a lot, mind you, but some nonetheless."

( I have done a lot of 'soldering' in the electrical / electronic arenas. )

~ Automotive Mechanics

I have done repair and maintenance on many cars - and one motorcycle. I have disassembled and reassembled automobile engines ( while replacing and / or conditioning some of the parts during a "rebuild" ).

I will admit that I did take an automotive mechanics 'elective' course while in high school. However, I do not consider that it made me an 'expert'.

~ Machine Mechanics

I have worked on many different types of mechanical devices and machines - building, repairing, etc.

Almost any and every common type of "shop tool" you can think of -- I have used one -- some, once or twice - others, many times.

( This is starting to sound like a resume, so I will stop here... :o I am only trying to make a point -- "let me get right to it"... )

I know how to "fix" things.

I know how to design and build things.

A lot of the 'miscellaneous' stuff I have learned -- I learned it "on my own" -- some of it I learned from individuals who knew what they were doing -- some of them might be considered 'experts', and others - maybe not so much ( yet they still knew what they were doing ).

While it is true that a lot of this "know-how" came from jobs I have had --- the point I am trying to make here is...

MOST of these things - I did not learn "in school" while persuing an education in "my field of study" ( focused on those particular things ) at a government-approved 'learning' institution.

There are a great many things I have learned how to do ( and 'fix' :D  ) without being an 'expert' in that particular field. I am not by any means a "master carpenter" or "master plumber" - or even a "master electrician" ( however, I have been told that my "temporary work" is better than the "permanent work" of some "master" electricians :p ).

Does any of this knowledge-and-experience make me a "master" anything? Of course not...

But then --- that, exactly, is the point ! ! !

You do not have to be an 'expert' to be able to do [ certain things that an 'expert' may happen to do ].

There is such a thing as 'education' obtained in a way other than the "official" government-approved-and-sanctioned path(s)...

Such education can still be valid -- because the knowledge and "know-how" can most certainly be real.

Some folks just might be suprised at how many 'expert' non-experts there are in this world --- people who may not have the "official credentials" as sanctioned by government - but who know what they are doing and are very capable...

--

What you may not realize is -- a lot of "education" today is actually full of propagandist brain-washing. There is a lot of it in modern 'science' and [ especially ] 'medicine'.

The doctors of "modern medicine" today ( in the U.S.A., at least ) are basically only taught how to do 2 things -- prescribe pharmaceutical drugs ( which, for-the-absolute-most-part, only cover symptoms - and, rarely provide an actual cure for anything ) and remove body parts. They are not taught how to identify the [ actual ] cause of a problem ( often simply an "imbalance" of something in the body ) and seek to remedy it with natural means. They are only taught to offer pharmaceutical "solutions" that usually only "cover symptoms" - while generating some other problem as a side-effect, no less.

Sometimes, the best education is not the government-induced kind... ;)

Wow. Well said my brother, well said...

I have always wondered about the ADHD thingy, it was never heard of
when I was a child. Now everyone points to it when a child is naughty.

I dont know enough about it or have any experience of it in others to give an
opinion. But I had a friend with 5 year old who use to avoid giving her any
specific sweets, drinks etc with a specific orange colouring in it. She use to
say her behaviour became very hyper after having this colouring.

It has often been said in the UK by older people, that despite the
rations during the world wars, people had a more healthy diet then than now.

The following article is intersting and seems to suggest an unhealthy
diet was directly linked to women having to go to work and the
need for more fast food and ready meals.

If you take the time and read the blog I supplied, you'll see why I don't believe it and also see scientists that prove it doesn't exist. So many people want to believe something without research because it's easier. Of course drugs will "work". They'll work on anyone. One cannot negate the effects of drugs. I once took Nyquil believing I was "stronger" than the sedative in it. False. I couldn't stay awake to save my life. Do you truly believe that Nyquil only works if one has a cold? Nope. So, yes, they worked as downers because that is what they were created to do. That doesn't prove ADHD exists. That only proves that drugs that are created to work as downers do so.

A 38 minute video about the literal fraud and lies being proposed by the pharma industry. Some of this may be quite shocking to some people.

You need to do more research then
Ritalin is NOT made to be a "downer", or as it's actually called: A sedative
It is speed

I never did agree with the drugging of kids. But how do you stop a parent from doing it. They wont listen. I have a great grand child being drugged. I cant stop it. I pray.
