What does it mean to abide in Christ? It means lots of things. As you look at the Greek lexicon it gives several possibilities and only one IMO fit the passage being discussed which is "continue". This is what Jesus is instructing His disciples to do in order to "bear fruit", which is the point of the whole passage. This passage is in no way related to salvation because in verse 3 Jesus already established that they ARE saved. He is discussing "fruit bearing", not salvation or any aspect of it. He is instructing His disciples to abide (continue) following Him after He is gone or they will not bear fruit.

μένω
menō
men'-o
A primary verb; to stay (in a given place, state, relation or expectancy): - abide, continue, dwell, endure, be present, remain, stand, tarry (for), X thine own.

To abide in Christ means to stay in the house. Don't leave because of temptations. There's no safety walking outside of Christ in the flesh. It's like the children of Israel being told to remain inside their houses on Passover night so that they wouldn't be harmed by the death angel. Christ is our Passover.

Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel, and said unto them, Draw out and take you a lamb according to your families, and kill the passover. And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip [it] in the blood that [is] in the bason, and strike the lintel and the two side posts with the blood that [is] in the bason; and none of you shall go out at the door of his house until the morning. For the LORD will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the LORD will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite [you]. Exodus 12:21-23

Got to love the way people use OT scripture trying to prove NT truth.

Thank God we have a New Covenant build upon better promises and the blood of Jesus speaks of better things then the Old Covenant. This means we are in the house forever sealed by the blood of Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

Even though we are sealed with the Holy Spirit and that He remains with us forever - we still need to live by the life of Christ in us ( which is abiding in Christ in what His life brings to us ) in order to experience His salvation from the things that this life bring and to bear much fruit as Scripturplz has brought out.

Ephesians 1:13 (NASB)
[SUP]13 [/SUP] In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise,

John 14:16-17 (NASB)
[SUP]16 [/SUP]
"I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever;

[SUP]17 [/SUP] that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.

wow...there is a new covenant now...you can read about it in the NEW TESTAMENT

the blood of Christ washes away ALL sins...the blood of bulls never could...

How are you abiding in Christ if you put animal blood on your lintel?

Please, we need some actual Holy Spirit understanding and not this religious gobble-de-gook!

Praise the Lamb of God who was slain before the foundation of the world...He who was and is and is to come!

The blood of Christ washes away sins, and the blood of bulls and goats doesn't. duh...

Everything in the OT is for our edification and is filled with shadows that are fulfilled in Christ. IMO one cannot really understand the NT that well without understanding the OT.

YOU, not me, are the one who posted the OT scripture

oh yeah...it is all for our edification...and the NT is so that we don't get stuck in the old

I am really well versed and studied up on my old which helps me to comprehend the new so much better...thanks! that's a good point...in fact, if everyone would just study the entire 66 books, people would not be so easily led astray...but that's a thread for another day :)

oh one more thing....even if no one ever read, let alone studied the OT? they would still do better to only read the new and learn all about Christ...He has now stepped OUT of the shadow and invites us to follow

Can you say amen? the joy of the Lord is our strength! pass it on!

I hope for your Salvation (In Jesus Christ), and I Do you commandments.

well, this thread is not about 'doing' the commandments...it's about abiding in our Savior

I dunno...but why do folks want to put themselves under a curse?

For as many as are of the works of the Law are under a curse; for it is written, "CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO DOES NOT ABIDE BY ALL THINGS WRITTEN IN THE BOOK OF THE LAW, TO PERFORM THEM." Galatians 3:10

Galatians was written by Paul to the good folks in Galatia, who had been seduced by the Judaizers and were trying to maintain their salvation through works

God does not like that...that's a slap in His face...how can we do better than Him?

ps...you don't have to just HOPE...you can KNOW you are saved...it's not a guessing game!

John 14:21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

v 23Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. 24He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.

Luke 13:3 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

Matthew 19:16 And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? 17And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.

Matthew 19:20-21 The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet? 21Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.

Those that are under the "works" of the law are those who have not accepted Jesus Christ as their Saviour through faith.

Galatians 3:11
But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.12And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them.13Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: 14That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

Jesus Christ has redeemed the Israelites from the curse of being disobedient to the Law (Deuteronomy chap 28). That they might receive the promise of the renewal of the Spirit through faith to come back again to the Father. Read about the foolish virgins in Matthew 25. They were not obedient to the faith.

Hebrews 10:26
For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, 27But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. 28He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: 29Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?

I wonder if anyone has ever considered the fact that we have to be saved and have the Spirit indwelling us before we can "love" Him since "love" is one of the "fruits of the Spirit".

Are you arguing with the Words of Christ ? John 14 is clearly talking about what someone who loves Him is doing in order to receives the promise of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit that draws men towards loving Him, but the baptism of the Spirit is for those who show their love towards him By believing in keeping He's words. (V23, V24).

what you are saying here, is that you have NEVER broken ANY commandment...unlike those awful Israelites who just could not get their act together...what were they thinking? I mean all they had to do was be perfect...as God is perfect

perhaps you can enlighten us as to how you have achieved something no one in the history of the universe...save Jesus Christ Himself, has been able to achieve

So, does the scripture lie when it tells us we are under a curse if we put ourselves under law?

does John lie when he tells us that if we sin we have an advocate with the Father (the Holy Spirit as our lawyer and Jesus as our alibi) that if we confess our sins, He, God, is faithful and just to forgive us our sins?

stringing a gang of verses together simply means you are good at doing a topical search (right Angela? I seez you are making your way through this revealing thread )

what church do you belong to? there is such awkward dissemination of truth here, that I hardly know where to start

no one comes to the Father UNLESS he/she is drawn to come to the Father...repent means to align your mind with God...in other words change your mind...through scripture is a great way to do that...in more other words, you AGREE that what God says about you and your sinful condition is true...so, you agree you have need of His requirement...you need forgiveness of your sins through the shed blood of His Son Jesus Christ...gospel in a nutshell

I am saved and filled with the Holy Spirit and speak in tongues/pray/sing/interpret often enough

here is an eye opener for you regarding why we love God (if in fact we do)

We love him, because he first loved us. I John 4:19

Faith requires ACTION (Obedience to it), If we do not act upon our faith then that faith does not show forth Fruit. The fruit is the action that follows our faith. Faith without works(action) is dead faith (James 2:17). If you do not act upon your faith to be obedient to the Words of Christ which you claim to believe in then you are no longer abiding in He's Words. In other words you are showing yourself to not to be abiding in Christ. Jesus taught that all men repent of their sins and be obedient to the commandments (Matt 5:17-19, Matt 19:16, Luke 13:3). Which is to act upon your faith and showing fruit.

but I'm done....this is about abiding in Christ and you have handily made it about OBEYING the law means abiding in Christ

who sent you over here?

Christ sent me over here. You are not arguing with me, but with He's written words. How am I derailing this thread ? I am explaining what it means to abide in Christ using the Written Word. Just because you do not agree with what is said does not mean it is not so.

John 15:1 [FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif][/FONT]I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. 2Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.

Fruit is the action that follows our faith when we are obedient to it.

so you have no response and so you launch a personal attack?

that's the go to response around these places and most evident when someone tries to defend an indefensible position
