Some good answers to this thread - Thank you all for your replies so far . . .

What am I getting at by this question? (Here comes the sermon . . . -- OK - I will keep it short!)

Would it be possible for you to keep from committing any known purposeful sin for 5 seconds? I hope so! Then do it for five more seconds and five more and so on!

So is it possible for a man to keep from sinning all of his life? Yes, Jesus did, and He was a man "tempted in all points like as we are, yet he was without sin." I know, you say, that isn't fair, because He was also God. And that is very true. But do we not believe that as Christians we have the Holy Spirit (the very person of God) living inside of us?

I know that this is a very "theoretical" question, because the Bible is very clear that "all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God". So we know that no person besides Jesus ever has or ever will never sin in their lifetime. And most of us (maybe all of us - unless we pass on really soon!! ?) will commit sins the rest of our lives.

But, and here is the punch line! We do not have to commit sin! Why? because the Spirit of God living in us is able to help us live in victory! We don't have to plan to keep on sinning!

So when/if we do commit sin it is not God's fault nor is it God's plan for our lives.

We sin when we choose our own selfish way. Sin is our own fault. God has made every provision so that we can live in victory.

To answer the question - "Would it be possible for a Christian to live the rest of his life without commiting a (known) act of sin" - to answer this as - "No, it is not possible" is to say that God is not able or willing to give us what is needed for victory.

Here are the words of BenFTW (I couldn't say it better!) - "VVhat would be the cost of walking sinless? I feel like it would take a crazy amount of faith, chastisement, and sanctification. Truth be told, it seems like it would be a scary crash course. LOL Not that God is abusive or anything, but it might be like a lot of self abandonment. God is already sanctifying us, but that level of holiness seems like it would take a price and dedication that most probably aren't willing to do."

Am I saying Christians don't sin? Absolutely not! I am saying that too many of us are satisfied with much less in our Christian walk than what God has made available to us.

Me? I sinned today - and I knew I sinned when I did it! (Thank God for forgiveness) - but tomorrow - with God's help and His Spirit in me we shall walk in victory from now on! No more planning to sin!

Addendum to post #21: As I said at the beginning, my question is only talking about known sins we commit voluntarily. If you add sins that we commit ignorantly and unknowingly then it would seemingly become impossible - and as many of you say, and I agree - that the person who says "I am 100 percent righteous and I don't sin" is only deceiving himself.

We often in our modern evangelical world look at sin as only the "biggie" sins and if we don't do them ( like adultery, stealing..etc ) - then we can live sin free.

The reality is that malice and slander and hypocrisy, and envy...etc - are just as much sin as living the homosexual lifestyle.

It's interesting that some that say others are lawless ( even though they don't know their life at all ) and say to walk in purity and righteousness are the very same ones that think it's perfectly natural and ok to slander others and exhibit malice towards them and mock them.

These are just like the ones living the so-called Christian homosexual lifestyle only they don't see themselves as the same as this group - but in reality - in God's eyes...they are doing the exact same thing.

This is not living a life that is sinless.

No.....We are all sinners and fall short of the Glory of God. Trust him who has no sin and if you have been given his spirit, it has no sin. So.....quit trying to earn your salvation and give thanks to the Lord for HIS salvation. Rest in him.,not what you do, or say or your choices, ect, for he cannot fail and we will always fail. Give al praise to our Lord and Savior for his wonderful completed work'

Sing praise to God with understanding (Psalm 47)for he is King of ALL the earth. Even the heathen

Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness and wonderful works to the children of Men....Pls 111

Those of you who say it is not possible to live the rest of your life without committing an act of known sin:

(1) Did you read posts # 21 and 22?
(2) Are you saying that God is not able to give a Christian moment by moment victory over sin?
(3) The point is not saying we are a person that hasn't sinned;, the point is realizing that when we do sin, it is our own fault and choice.
(4) God is able to keep us from sinning; but we fail!

The time between justification when we are saved, and glorification, when Jesus returns, can be a long road. But a good road, because the Holy Spirit is changing and transforming us.

"
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect." Romans 12:2

Transform is in the passive tense in Greek (in English, too!) which means it is something done to us by someone else. So God is the one who is changing us.

I think the goal of the journey is to walk with Christ more and more every day. If we could be totally sinless, then we would have reached glorification, which simply doesn't happen till we die, or Jesus returns.

But part of the journey is learning more and more what displeases God and separates us from him. The gross sins, are easy. Stop excessive drinking in my case. It was gone from the moment I was saved. God just took it away! Hallelujah!

But so many other sins! And some took years and years of God working on me to get rid of. I have been so proud of the fact that I really don't lose my temper anymore. Not even when all these atheists attacked me so badly on Sunday. God helped me through that, as well as prayers.

So great, I don't lose my temper anymore. But I am "proud" of myself. Hmm! No credit to God, and thinking I have made it! And I realized today, although I have really boxed that anger down into the tiniest box, that my road rage has not even began to be dealt with. Today I got behind some person doing 40 kph in a 60 zone. Then 35 in a 50 zone. I was looking at following this idiot for another 20 minutes, because the road was 2 way the whole way to town. So I took a right turning lane at the lights, zipped around him doing - maybe 100kph (60 mph) in a 50 kph zone.

Hey I passed him! Then I felt terrible conviction. I had a panic attack, which is not my MO. Lots of repenting to God, thanking him I didn't get caught by the police (would that be another sin - not wanting to get caught for doing wrong??)

A simple example. God is always working on us, changing us from glory to glory. I know I have a long way to go. But I have come even farther, from the wild, rebellious hippie I once was. God has placed a very legalistic husband in my life. And it is good! He is always happy to point out my sin. Just as I am always happy to point out his legalism. Both in love, of course.

I do hope those who think they are perfect get a good wake up call! Before they die, and find out their arrogance and pride has left them as someone "saved through the fire."

"
If anyone's work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire." 1 Cor. 3:15

it must have been all those smileys

they seem insincere when you group them all together like that

ps.....why attack our faith? you don't have permission to do that. those are the words of Christ and He has authority to say such but you do not

Forget not sinning for a life time. How about not sinning for a day? Does anyone think that is possible? You see, God's word says that all things are possible with God and so it seems that might just be possible. I am not saying that it has happened or will happen but that it is possible.

VVhat does it mean that there is a possibility to go a day without sin? It doesn't mean anything in terms of our salvation. If we go one day without sin it doesn't balance the days we have sinned. That would be like the concept of reincarnation, eventually reaching a balance of right and wrong. So while it holds no value in terms of our justification, what value would it hold?

All in all, why do we even want to sin less at all? VVhat gain is there in sinning less? Just maybe we've learned from God that love leads to a better life. A better experience. Sin is void of love, so to go a day without sin would mean you chose that day to love. To love others, God, and self. The question, I guess, is what significance is there in us sinning less or even not at all? VVe've been set free from sin, we are dead to it. Our victory over sin has what significance, if even sin doesn't condemn us before God on account of Jesus? Is it simply, to love?
