does anyone else think it might be a good idea to disallow new members to post threads the minute they join?

oh I know, some will say, well people join and post in the family forum because they need help

this is what I am really talking about

someone just joined on the 15th and they have started thread after thread...8 within the last 24 hours and each one is nothing but doctrine for their particular beliefs...which appear to be RCC...I could be wrong

but, and you can disagree, I think it would be helpful to have new members engage forum members with say...100 or so posts, before allowing them to take over the place and everyone is busy refuting what they have to say and they just keep creating new threads

IMO, the person who does that kind of thing, is using this forum as a platform and has no intention of actually joining in

kick it to the curb? good idea? anyhow, that's what I think about the ability of new members to go post multiple threads when we don't even know what they believe or who they believe in

thanks

I think it's a fabulous idea. After all we joined here to be a part of what's already established. Nobody should come in and try to dominate.

I like this idea as well. Other forums have this as well. I know who you are talking about and it seems this person is pulling these lessons from a blog spot.

I'm a new member here. I found this site while searching the web for answers to a couple of questions. After looking around for a bit I decided to join and posted a New Member thread. Some of the things I was looking for had not been addressed in previous threads, that I found anyway, so I started new threads for them. If I was not able to start those new threads then I would have just moved on to a forum that did not have that restriction. As I am new here I don't know who you are referring to so I can't speak to that persons intent but should this not be handled by the mods? In my opinion putting limits on honest folks due to the actions of a few trouble makers is bad policy. I know I am not a contributing member of this forum yet as my posts to this point have been questions rather than meaningful thoughts or assistance but I'm sure lots of newer members have contributed in a meaningful way prior to reaching the lofty 100 posts. Another forum I frequent uses an Ignore button, might be helpful in this instance. Just my $.01.

Hi jb1023

I'm bringing up the subject of some people joining, and then flooding the forum with copy/paste doctrine and thinking they are teaching us all

legitimate posts I have no problem with and I suspect neither does anyone else

well no, you don't know what I am referring to, but I understand your concern and no worries

100 was a just a number...it could be 50 or whatever...

I think jb is right. Such restrictions are overboard. A more feasible idea is a temporary restriction on the Number of threads they can create. This way it doesn't punish users who don't have an agenda, but still puts restrictions on spammy new users that are here to tell everyone what's right.

And, jb, this is a section for people to post ideas that the site owner can consider utilizing to improve the site. So a suggestion to limit new threads from new users would be something handled by the site owner. So putting the idea here is actually the right thing to do.

We also have an ignore feature, but it's effectiveness is limited. It doesn't hide the fact that a user creates thread after thread. And it only hides their posts inside the thread. The displays on the side that show all new posts and threads does not get blocked. Neither does it block when someone quotes the user.

Creating these threads does not technically fall under 'breaking a rule' so mods are not likely to do much about it. But sometimes people who don't break site rules, but break 'netiquette' rules can cause a stir among the regulars. There have been a few cases where mods had to step in to prevent the netiquette breaker from being lynched, and request they stop their behavior.

Thank you for sharing. There have been a few good suggestions on CC today between your thread and the attitude adjustment thread. And thanks for the rep!

Would be a good idea in some cases but then the people that come on here for help or prayer wouldn't be able to post threads requesting it. So no we just have to learn to ignore or put up with these annoying people.

Actually, if you read the first line of the second paragraph i'm speaking to JB about things he said.
And the next paragraph is in response to JB talking about an ignore feature.
And the last paragraph is in response to JB talking about this being a mod issue.

It could be that since you suggested that new users not be able to create threads right away, then how long before they can? Because, though you may not have used the term, the concept you provided is essentially a probationary concept.

Or he could be referencing my suggestions of a period of time where there are limits. Which, again, could qualify as a probationary concept.

So both you and i, technically, offered ideas that had a probationary tone, even if we didn't use that term.

Everyone has a right to speak. No one has a right to be heard. Put the offender on your ignore list and their posts won't come up. I personally don't like the slippery slope of regulating speech. On the other hand... They are very annoying!!

What are rep points used for? I've not seen them in any of the other forums I frequent.

I think this is a great idea and I for one, as a new member, would not have an issue with this and I doubt most legit new users would either. It makes sense for new folks to build some trust so to speak.

RCC is the Roman Catholic church.

Rep points increase your rep powers and green bars. They are given when someone really likes or is impressed with a post you have made. For every 100 points, you gain a power. If someone with multiple powers reps you, you gain as many points that they have in powers.
