Those last two verses in Ecclesiastes should be helpful here.

We were created to glorify the Lord, and commanded to spread the gospel. Unmarried and child free people have a wonderful ability to dive into many ministries that are more difficult for others. You could do mission work in foreign lands, help with local after school programs, change the lives of children who need mentors or just someone to care about them. You could work with a pregnancy center or food bank, or start a park ministry, check into foster care or hospice care.

I guess the question for you is, what do you feel called to do? Do you have an interest in a particular ministry or lifestyle? Take that and run with it. :)

To crush your enemies; to see them driven before you; to hear the lamentations of their women?

Oh, what's the PURPOSE...not what is BEST. My bad.

I truly believe God put us here for two main reasons.. To enjoy life, and to help others.
(not necessarily in that order)

The bible does say that we were created to glorify God, but exactly how we are to do that is up for interpretation..

In my personal opinion, it means to use the gifts/talents that God gave you to do good in the world and to give credit to God. But just as Adam and Eve were originally placed in an earthly paradise, God wants us to enjoy our lives here on earth as well.. :)

I was being silly earlier because I don't like to think about things like this. They make my brain hurt.

I know I intend to remain unmarried and child-free for the rest of my life. As for what will be my purpose...no thoughts. I've pretty much rebelled against the idea my entire life that I am supposed to live up to another person's standards or expectations. Once I am no longer a care-giver, I do know I am headed out to the wilderness for good, and maybe out there I will find some purpose. Right now, it's just kind of one day to the next.

Mm... I'd say it's to fulfil God's plan and purpose for our lives specifically; as well as, following the 'general' guides for life the Bible teaches all of us.

All the experiences and ways to love and be loved... I mean, I think God created us for Himself ultimately, so life's 'purpose' or what's often better phrased as 'our own fulfillment or satisfaction' can only really be found in Him. Blaise Pascal called this reality 'the God-shaped hole'.

The way we come to know these things usually seems to be through prayer, scripture, worship, and fellowship/service to/with others. The Navigators call this 'the wheel'.

That's the short answer anyway...

What if our natural inclination is to be selfish? (taking the credit for ourselves) Using the gifts and talents God placed in us. Isn't the purpose of our lives...interwoven with true joy and happiness??? And how do we resolve this with service to God? and our own truthful selfish ambitions.??? How do we know...if what we are doing is truly for God...or our selves?? How does a person (or others) know the difference?

The same purpose as those who are married and have children. God created all people with the same purpose, just with a different path to get there. For some it's marriage, others it's not. Some with kids, some without. Some to travel and do missions, others to be a witness at their job.
If a person can only find purpose in their life by children, spouse, family, etc... then their life won't have purpose even if they get those things either. In fact Paul considered those things distractions from our true purpose here, that tethered us down more to worldly needs and focus and restricting our availability to God.

I think (and truly feel) without a purpose. We simply exist. Aimlessly wandering. Never finding true happiness. And life is too short to simply go through the motions of life without some purpose to inspire us. Maybe i'm wrong. I don't know. What do you think? Do you have an identifiable purpose that brings you happiness...or joy.??

Does there have to be purpose?

If we are...created for God's pleasure..and his delight. My real question is WHY?? ..and HOW can we find God and keep him in the first position of our lives. (and not forget who helped get us...to where we needed to be...or the blessing in our life?)

God created everything for His pleasure; therefore, live your life in ways that please your Heavenly Father.

Beautiful thing to see a person humble and expose their feelings. Very brave of you Tess. Thank you.

I believe we were originally created to be in perfect, loving, fellowship with God.

Then the dang fall happened! Now we live our lives in these dead, utterly sinful, smelly, fallen bodies. Even those of us that have been reborn in Christ still groan with the fact that we were not designed to have to deal with loneliness, pain, heartache, guilt, stress, death, and every other facet of a fallen world.

That's why I adore those precious moments when I can feel the Lord's presence, which renews my Spirit to glorify Him and do the ONLY lasting thing that has any real meaning, which is allow myself to be used by Him to bring others to Christ so that we may one day be permanently restored to His Presence and fellowship with Him.

In the meantime we should focus our efforts on loving each other, and bringing the Gospel to everyone in that love.

May God's peace and joy reside in you!
