I'm drawn to darker materials, like movies and books etc. Is this wrong?

This thread brings to mind the time when I was 6 years old and my cousins thought it was alright for me to watch The Exorcist. That movie was a little rough for me to watch and process at that age.

It wasn't good. I tend to not like horror movies. Not because they are frightening, but more that I just don't see the point in people wanting to be scared by a movie. Maybe it's because I don't get the adrenaline rush from fear like other people do. I dunno. I got dragged along to a horror movie some time back and it was just...boring. The people I was with were enjoying it, but I just didn't "get it". *shrugs*

I've always hated horror movies. I hate being scared and paranoid and on edge for the rest of the night. Even things that are just really intense in a paranormal way are too much for me. I have to admit, though, I do have a bad movie addiction that I struggle with as well. I've never seen any of the three things you listed, so I can't really judge where you are based on that.

But like others have said, I personally don't it's "wrong" unless it promotes or justifies immorality. Because the truth is, real life is dark. Darker than we know in many cases. So I don't think that "dark" things, as it's not making positive light of evil, is bad or a sin.

I can't pick a favorite movie. I just don't know. Nothing stands out.

To relax, I like to read. For fun...umm...I got nothing. I don't remember the last time I had fun.

The village would have been an awesome movie if the plot hadn't been revealed waaaay to early.
The part until you found out the secret was good, the rest was boring :p

You might enjoy some of the end times movies that exist. Most of them are packed with action, but be aware that most of them also only have vague links to scripture

M. Night Shyamalan? Well that's different. He's just bad. lol

Kind of like Stephen King. It doesn't take long to guess how it will end.

But then again, I think Titanic, Gone with the Wind, and Wizard of Oz were all lousy movies too, so do you want my opinion?

Honestly? My sense of what I liked in a movie has changed over the decades. when I was young, I most definitely liked dark movies, (now that I know your definition of dark isn't that dark. Kind of thought you were talking Batman, Hannibal, Dracula, and Gotham City.) And then somewhere between being able to predict the endings and I'm tired of these dark thoughts in my mind, I slowly got into other kinds of movies.

Which kinds? Avatar is great. But mostly I like ET, Harry Potter, Toy Story, Ice Age, and Minions. So, again? Do you really want my opinion?

I like M Night! I think he has a gift! He has definately gone off the deep end with some more recent films he's done. But I think he thinks out of the box and is genius! Harry Potter is icky to me:/

I read a lot of science fiction. Big fan of Frank Herbert, and also the works his son Brian Herbert put out with Kevin J. Anderson. Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov. I like Fantasy books too. Tolkein, Terry Brooks, Robert Doherty. I like books that are research-oriented in Biblical topics and/or non-Biblical prophecies like The Bible Code, Petrus Romanus, Exo-Vaticana, and then I like my graphic novels. I like the stuff put out by Dark Horse Comics, like the Aliens vs. Predator series and the multi-volume set of the Savage Sword of Conan.

sometimes i really enjoy (un)black metal.
not always. but sometimes.

like this:

((lyrics are Job 11:13-20))

and i like 'goth' style music sometimes too. somber. brooding.
but always with the message of the gospel, and the truth of God in it.
i just don't identify with secular themes anymore, at all.

because, Emily is correct: "
real life is dark"
but there is also this: that through Christ, we are taken out of darkness, into light!!
and there are many who reject this, and love darkness anyway.
which is dark in itself. so Solomon said "
the heart of the wise is in the house of mourning" because wisdom is often hindsight, and most people are fools - even the wise, because they know they are.
but David was able to say that "
weeping lasts for a night, but joy comes in the morning"

if you devote yourself to Him,
darkness will become like morning!
life will be brighter than noonday!

it's not wrong to be drawn to 'dark things'
it's honesty.
but we are a people redeemed from darkness -- so i think, examine these things and remember your hope. don't be subsumed by them, as their purpose is, for the world -- our reaction to them ought to be substantially different. not fatalistic, but grateful, though not without sorrow for those who are lost.

I was drawn to it sadly because as in many cases today the church skip the darker stuff.
I guess i wanted to know who the enemy was. What was real. Is hell real. And its very real. To search it out with God in hand, to reaearch what ticks in the hearts of men is sometimes needed.
If Jesus leads us the darkness flees.
I didnt know that really when i was into the dark stuff so I kinda burned myself.
But darkness like in black aint satans best weapon. Its his ability to morph himself into light. But it takes power. So he flees when the flashloghts are too sharp (Jesus the light).

But research is one thing. Participation/communion is two totally different things as you know.
Please do not try to gain knowledge by communion with the darkness.
Praise Jesus when you study that he reveals to you stuff.

All great movies.

So... any sort of indicator what you mean by 'darker'? Even if you don't want to retype your whole message. While these were great movies they don't really show a tendency towards anything specifically 'darker' as they were all pretty mainstream popular.

Way back when, would Humpty Dumpty be considered a dark story since he fell and crashed into a lot of pieces and no one could put him back together again. As a child, I just saw this little cute egg who somehow just got cracked and that was that. The difference would be the "visual" effects the story would be cast in today. It very well could be turned into a horrible monster type Humpty with blood and guts as all rotten eggs might be. And of course his fall would be in slow motion with scary music.

And what about the horror of Little Red Riding Hood being scared so much by that fierce wolf who was going to eat her up. Wait a min., I think we have many types of that sort of story out now.

I loved to read Hunger Games because I could see it the way I wanted to see it. Especially when reading you can sort of fade out the parts that you don't want to visualize. But it was a different experience to see the movie with all the visual and sound effects.

So, are there different shades of dark? Depending on the way it is portrayed?
