Amen there should be more to life than just survival.
Reminds me of a song. Surprised? :p

"It's a good day, good day to be alive
So let's do more than just survive
Don't lose siiiiiight of all the beauty that surrounds you
Don't let it pass you by
Cause it's a good day to be alive"

Found it on youtube! And the first verse addresses a lot of the feelings expressed in this thread.

I think God created us for company. (Different company than the angels) as well as to praise Him.

I personally need to feel useful, like I'm making a difference. Doesn't have to be grand, just useful.
I think the simplest answer is often the best. Like if you can't explain something to a child then you probably don't understand it yourself (stealing from Albert Einstein). I think when I enter the Kingdom of God and all those mysteries that I can't fathom the answer to become known to me, I'm gonna go 'oooohhhhhh. Of course! Don't know why I didn't think of that'.

You feel "Survival" is the purpose of our lives? Back before you were born...there was a man..who gave his life to save others in the icy frozen Potomac River. (A plane crashed), the footage of what he did...was shown all over the world. The helicopter kept lowering the life vest to him. HE? passed it to the others. He was a Citadel Graduate (North Carolina). He KNEW we was going to die. HE didn't carry on..and scream to be saved, he got busy...and cared about the others lives. He KNEW death was coming for him. He was trapped. And in his moment of true testing. He did the right thing. There are many heroic men..and women...who have died...to save others. (or at least put their lives at true risk) to save another. Fire Fighters and Cops and Military Soldiers are case in point. Do they WANT to die? no. ...but they care about the helpless and defenseless in our world. Without them? YOU and I both would be dead. ....perhaps....you could be right. I honestly don't know..the human mind..or heart anymore in 2016. I'd like to think....there is still a spark...in the lives of many people...that would risk it all...for the "SURVIVAL" of human life..of another in extreme danger if called to action. For all the evil in our modern day world, I still like to think...there is more decency....and LOVE for another that overrides...all hate. I sure hope so.
This is an interesting subject, Angelsnow. My personal theory for the lack of compassion in today's modern society is what I'll call 'an over-abundance of convenience'. What that basically means is people don't need each other for anything anymore (outside of family and friends). If you're lost, you open google maps... if you need something you buy it at a store or have it delivered to your door.... If you want to talk to someone you can call or text a friend on your cellphone.... you don't even have to go to a bank to do banking anymore...

In other societies, people still need to interact with each other on a daily basis, or maybe it is part of their culture.

Anyway, that's my theory.

Just want to say i understand you.
I read 1 book of samuel.
There is a woman Hanna. With all the good advises I thought it was appropiate
to show just understanding. Its ok to cry about it. My sister been there too.
Im kinda new in my walk so I just want to share how many we are out there who go through
the same as you in diffrent ways. We are one in christ. But its very natural to long for children and the apostle Paul even
command it as the first natural option. But of course if you in prayer to Jesus will have him make you fit for a special task its also good.
But beware to burn your time in works for the works sake as like it would be a requirement for salvation.
oh sorry
i aint no preacher

The purpose of life for me can generally be summed up in what I call the 5 "F's" (listed in no particular order): Family, Friends, Fun, following my Faith and living Fruitfully.

I would be hard pressed to be unsatisfied if I had all these taken car of.

What should be the purpose of life......for the:

1. Unmarried
&
2. child free

(All opinions and comments are appreciated)
Well I think I'm still having trouble finding the right words to express what I want to say, but I did want to respond to this:

I think the heart of this question is really more about who can I be deeply connected to and invest in when I have no spouse or children. And as I get older, I'm finding it more and more difficult to find opportunities to connect deeply with people. There are plenty of days when I feel lonely or irrelevant, but then I just have to remind myself about the opportunities I have: to give a compassionate word of advice to a fellow CCer who is hurting, to give some stupid little just because gift to someone I appreciate, to smile at a child at church or offer to keep an eye on the kid running around so their parents can talk to an adult for a bit, to invite another lonely single gal to lunch or a movie.

So I'm learning slowly to do my best to be a touch of God to whoever is around; to spread as much kindness, compassion, encouragement, and sometimes tough love as I can. And in return, even if I never marry and have kids, I do have a lot of people who care about me, and I about them, and I've made a lot of lives a little bit better. And this side of heaven, that will be enough.

In my experience the quickest way to connect with someone is to share in their pain or let them share in yours. Be the good listener and the one who always shows up when things are looking bleak and you'll find a lot of people to connect with. (Just be careful to know when to keep investing and when to cut ties with someone who is just going to be an emotional vampire and drain you. )

To die. That is the goal that is why we are here. seems quite pointless if put in that blunt manner

Of course, by then you will know why you didn't think of it.

Seems pointless if put that inaccurately, more like. We weren't created to die. We were created to live and love and grow and share, and in doing so give glory to the one who created us and puts breath in our lungs everyday. Get started! :)

To eat fried chicken and cheesecake, and to blow your money as fast as you make it.

Quote from a poem:
"When all is done,
It is not to die,
It is to die well."

I just came up with this randomly....btw...and I think it sums up the three stages of life if you think about it 1. we're getting schooled to reach our potential, 2. Once we have a career we think about settling down. 3. after having a family you want to rest/retire....let me know what you guys think....

The three R's

1.Reach your potential -> set goals and strive to achieve them the best you can with your limited time on Earth.

2.Reproduce -> find a wife/husband for respective person

3.Rest- Take it easy, slow down and enjoy life
Hi Ultimatum,

I believe that this is the middleclass/ American dream that advertisers are selling us.And they are very good at it.
Personally,I believe the stakes are very high. For the believer and unbeliever alike. We can win an eternal crown or fritter away our lives on fleeting pleasures.Unbelievers drink an ocean of wrath for a drop of pleasure.
While I am not opposed to enjoying the blessings God bestows on His children - my concern is are we settling for lesser pleasures? If God is the Source and Fountainhead of everything good....doesn't it make sense to fight to let a love of Him displace any other idol?
I speak as a single who is aware of the (mixed) blessing of being unmarried. This life is short. And as the great revivalist Jonathan Edwards put it," I seek to aquire for myself as much happiness in the next life as possible."

Regardless of marital status and whether or not a person has kids, human beings have a universal purpose:

‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself." Matt 22:37-39

There are some unmarried, childless role models in the Bible who fulfilled their God-given purpose. There are no spouses or children documented in the Bible for these folks:

> Jesus

Who is Jesus Christ?

> Paul

What should we learn from the life of Paul? Who was Paul?

> Miriam

Who was Miriam in the Bible?

> Elijah

What should we learn from the life of Elijah?

> Jeremiah

What should we learn from the life of Jeremiah?

> Ruth's sons died.

What should we learn from the life of Ruth?

> Nehemiah

What should we learn from the life of Nehemiah?

> John the Baptist

What should we learn from the life of John the Baptist?

> Mary Magdalene

Who was Mary Magdalene?

> Lydia

Who was Lydia in the Bible?

> Mary of Bethany

What should we learn from the life of Mary of Bethany?

> Anna

Who was Anna the prophetess in the Bible?
Correction: I meant to say that Naomi's (not Ruth's) husband and two sons died.

The Purpose of Life is basically to risk it all for God. To take your life to a level where nothing matters but Him. When you get there....then you'll know there's purpose in living.

Hi Tess, I think one of my purposes in life is to be a good friend to you. God told me it would be ok.

Our purpose in life is to eat chocolate, enjoy it and praise God for making something as marvelous as cocoa. :D
