A man I dated was from that area and would say warsh, his whole family did. It was like nails on a chalkboard to me. Also when people call a creek a crick, it's clearly spelled creek, unless you have a speech impediment then say CREEK. I worked with a woman that pronounced chimney, chimley. It was so annoying.

I think most of Pennsylvania has normal boring dialect. They do spell Diner, Dinor, I don't know why, some people say soda and some say pop. I say soda. Haha, my dad would say warsh. Warshington LOL. He said a few others words like roof he would say ruff, and toilet was terlet. Not always, but enough to notice. And crick for creek :p But compared to me, most of my family speaks funny. They are quite nasal, say malk instead of milk, budado instead of potato, drawl their yeses into a yaaaasssss, goodness, where did all this come from? I don't sound anything like them! But then, I have been on the west coast for the last thirty nine years, and they are mostly in southern Ontario :p My one sister believed she had no accent, like most of us, it is always the other guy who has an accent haha. So I pointed out how she said rate instead of right, and she went away for the evening, and came back, and said, you are right. The odd thing is, right is only mispronounced some of the time and not all of the time. That is why she was not sure she did it at all. It is a very eastern thing to do, and that is something I do still do.

When I first came out west in '77, I noticed how much I said "Eh" all the time. ALL the time. Compared to those around me, it seemed I said it excessively. Probably because I did. LOL. So I weeded it out of my speech :D It took some effort, but I did it. Now I will only say it in jest, eh?

I don't really drink pop so I haven't much use for the word :p


 
Jenny... there was a guy that did commercials in Lubbock several years back, and he would talk about his heating and air conditioning bidness....

Caused many a face palm and head shaking....
 
I know people who say malk for milk. I think when did milk suddenly get spelled with an a? I also worked with someone who pronounced the word Italian Eyetalian. A guy we worked with asked her if she was from Eyetaly?, lol
 
HoneyDew... I went back to make sure I was spelling your name right.... and if that's you in your avatar, you are going to "H E double toothpicks" for lying about your age.... no way you're 50....

I had to smile at that comment, madame. I posted these once before, but I thought it was relevant to the topic again. And let me first say, I have male friends.


2011 arrest data from the FBI:


Males constituted 98.0% of those arrested for forcible rape
Males constituted 89.0% of those arrested for robbery
Males constituted 85.0% of those arrested for burglary
Males constituted 83.0% of those arrested for arson.
Males constituted 81.5% of those arrested for motor-vehicle theft.
Males constituted 81.7% of those arrested for stolen property.
Males constituted 81.7% of those arrested for vandalism.
Males constituted 79.7% of those arrested for offenses against family and children.

Those stats are terrible, but I sure don't want to be thought of as "one of those males". (If a lone woman walking at night is wary of me because of the first two stats, I wouldn't be offended. If she started ranting about how she wished "men would stop robbing and raping people" however, I would feel insulted even though I agree with her.)

Well I just learned today that you do not pronounce the I in some middle eastern languages, so Iran (for instance) is pronounced E-ran. My mother used to complain even when we were kids, we would ask, whose turn is it to wape the dishes? She wanted to know where we got that word from LOLOLOL. Wape. We didn't give it up though. We waped dishes. :D

I didn't know that they pronounced it E Ran. I work at a laundromat Friday nights and I have a couple college kids that are from Iran that I talk to all the time. I'm surprised they have never corrected me.
 
I find it interesting that the eastern thing to do is to turn
I's into A's while Aussies do the opposite. G'die myte.

My immediate family consists of White, Black, Hispanic & Asian. I am with you HoneyDew regarding the nasty comments toward the Black race. I'm sick of it!!!!! It's totally anti-Christian as Jesus tells us we are not to acknowledge one another by the outward man, but by His Spirit in us.

I don't think it's racist to only put forth the data on one race. But I do think it would be interesting to see the data on others for comparison.

If we treated each other they way we are supposed to... my goodness,
the world we be so different we would not recognize it. That is what
we have to look forward to in the new creation. Come Lord Jesus!

My great grandmother was Black Foot American Indian. I have White people in my family a little further back.
 
If any man believes those stats are true, you are regarding people according to the world's wisdom.

Jesus said what you do to others, you're doing to him. That's spiritual wisdom.
