So, as some of you know my past hasn't been the best with my father so I don't know much about him.
While trying to find shoe shining stuff I ran into a box with his military stuff in it.
I looked through all of his certificates for medals and about 6 of them said Operation Southern Watch.
Well, being the person I am I am now curious what that is.
Does anyone by chance know this?

President George Bush announced Aug. 26, 1992, a decision by a coalition of U.N. forces to begin surveillance operations in Iraq below the 32nd parallel. The goal was to ensure Iraq's compliance with UNSCR 688. To facilitate the monitoring, the coalition barred all Iraqi fixed and rotary wing aircraft from flying over the surveillance area. With the president's announcement, U.S. Central Command activated Joint Task Force Southwest Asia, a command and control unit for coalition forces monitoring the no-fly zone. The mission was dubbed Operation Southern Watch. The first Southern Watch sortie was flown Aug. 27, 1992 - less than 24 hours after the announcement.

I know you didn't mean anything by posting this, but you might want to make sure your dad doesn't know that you posted about this. I mean he might be sensitive about his stuff you know...especially mentioning it in a public forum... but I know you were just curious...just thought I'd give a heads up.

He's in jail currently. Pretty sure he doesn't know

Plus he didn't care about if anyone else was sensitive about anything.
He will be fine. Do you think he helped me when I was sensitive about rape or my brother being innapropriate with me or him hurting me and family? No, he decided to "visit" me in the hospital and try to choke me. So I really don't give a crap if he's sensitive about it at this point.

I know you didn't mean any harm by your post, but that is my reasoning. I sincerely do not care anymore what he is sensitive of. Maybe he should've taken the time to care about me and it would be different

I thought it was nice to see that your dad wasn't always a jerk and that at one point someone thought he was worth giving medals and awards to....went through my father's things after he died in March and found some old awards and certificates. That is what I thought....maybe my dad wasn't always a jerk, I wondered what happened and changed. Perhaps learn from his mistakes and protect my loved ones from going down the same path of despair.

Just wanted to say hi and that your in my prayers.

Smile! God loves you and even when the rest of the world doesn't understand, He does.

This is good.

We find it easy to condemn our parents for "what they did to us." And the problems we have had to deal with since then. But, maybe we can keep in mind that something probably also "happened to them" for them to have the problems they got stuck with.

Yeah I know, I've been thinking a lot about that....
When I was little I gave him a stuffed animal frog to take with him while he wasn't home...lol...
He kept it...it was in the box
That made me smile

I will learn from his mistakes

We are all screwed-up in some way. And we each usually do the best we are able to do with what we can still find of ourselves to work with.

My father was a real Ahole. I met his mother, my paternal grandmother, and I at least partially know why. She was a bitter old shrew. My father didn't get a chance to screw-up my life (except for never being there), my mother, because of her own problems, did a pretty good job of that. My father, instead, almost completely destroyed my brother's life instead (he came through another wife, and lived with my father)

My mother totally spoiled me, materially, but never really showed me a mother's love. I think the same thing happened to my brother with his mother.

We are both quite well-off financially now because of what our father left both of us. But we are both living lives that are a mess. We are different in that I became successful, and he became a Druggie who can barely stay employed. But neither of us know how to truly love anyone; not even ourselves.

But that changes nothing about who is responsible for each of our individual lives today. And, that is the bottom line. We only get to blame others (including our parents), to a point.

God teaches us how to love...our parents are human.

My mom can have her moments but she taught me about selflessness. She always made sure we had enough to eat even if that meant she didn't eat for a few days.

God teaches us that while the world values material things, but what really matters can't be touched or bought.


****side note: Willie don't be so hard on yourself, you have quite a few loving moments that even I can see online.

I'm not really being hard on myself. Loving humans doesn't come easy or natural for me. I do manage to act in love sometimes, but it is not an automatic response.

My brother once came to me because he got in trouble and wanted to talk to someone and told me that he couldn't love and he didn't know why
